From playing an instrumental role in the Allie’s victory over the Axis powers, to passing

the first minimum wage system in the United Kingdom, Sir Winston Churchill’s meteoric rise to
power came with tough challenges and obstacles. Winston Churchill took his first breath on
November 30, 1874. Born to his lord father Randolph Churchill and his mother, daughter to an
American businessman, Jeannie Jerome, they lived in their father’s ancestral castle in
Oxfordshire. Since both of Winston’s parents were absent for most of his childhood, he and his
siblings were raised by their nanny Elizabeth Everest. Due to his family’s absence, Winston’s
academic progress seemed to deteriorate, which later proved to be a blessing in disguise.

After witnessing his son’s academic demise, Churchill’s lord father prepared him a
military life. Winston Churchill graduated from Harrow school, and after two attempts Churchill
got accepted to Sandhurst, a royal military academy. Winston Churchill graduated from
Sandhurst on September 1893. Two years later he was enrolled in the British army. During the
same year, Churchill was eager to see how war took place so he took flight to Cuba, where they
were fighting for their independence from Spain. After aiding some of the Spanish troops,
Churchill took flight to the United states, then India. Serving in India was a period of self-clarity
for Churchill. A series of exchanged books between Churchill, serving in India at the time, and
his mother shaped his character and his political beliefs. Winston has also declared himself as
agnostic during this period. After this significant period in Churchill’s life, he served some time
in Sudan then he returned to India to complete his military services and submit his resignation
from the British army.

After serving two different political parties as member of parliament, Winston Churchill was
appointed as First Lord of Admiralty. Unfortunately for him this was the most challenging period
of time assigned by that role. Being First Lord of Admiralty, Churchill was responsible for the
United Kingdom’s naval defense. This period of time coincided with the events of World War I.
He was assigned by the British government to foresee the naval defense, and defend he did not.
Churchill assumed his role as a soldier would make him a great military strategist but he was
mistaken. In 1915, he had initially wanted to invade Germany from the Baltic sea; he did not go
down this route. He saw a better plan of taking the Gallipoli peninsula to support his Russian
ally, the plan ultimately failed and Britain suffered large casualties. After another unsuccessful
naval campaign in Dardanelles, Churchill was flamed by the English press and was forced to
resign his place of office.

After being removed from politics, Churchill continued publishing books, newspaper
articles, and speeches, most of which showing concern to the threat of Germany. When these
claims later came to life, English Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain tried to strike a peace
treaty with Nazi Germany, which proved to be a failure. Chamberlain later restored Churchill his
initial position as First Lord of Admiralty. After the British troops failed to prevent the
occupation of Norway, Chamberlain quickly lost the support of most of his cabinet and resigned
from being prime minister. In 1940, King George VI appointed Winston Churchill as Prime
Minister, the same day Hitler invaded Belgium and Holland. Churchill used his fantastic use of
wordplay to inspire his fellow Englishmen to fight the threat of Germany After France fell as
well, Churchill knew he could not win the war alone, so he tried to rally some allies. The
Japanese bombing on Pearl Harbor would not have been better timed than now, this meant that
the United States had to pick a side in this war. Churchill jumped at the opportunity immediately,
Churchill flew to Washington to try to win the Americans over to his cause, and he did brilliantly
so. Another unlikely alliance was formed with the Soviet Union after the sudden attack was
launched on Soviet Union. This newly forged alliance proved to be the turning point of the war.
Following a series of victories, Churchill declared that Germany has surrendered and the war
was won on May 7, 1945. General election was coming up, everyone had their money on
Winston Churchill to be re-elected as prime minister. After a series of verbal attacks on the
Labor Party, Churchill lost majority of the votes and lost election. Following his defeat in the
general election, Churchill became of the head of the Conservative Party. Four years later, he
won the general election and reigned as prime minister for another four peaceful years.

On January 12, 1965, Sir Winston Churchill suffered as stroke, which proved to be his last.
On January 24, 1965, Sir Winston Churchill passed away. The queen saw to herself to
commemorate the passing of this once in a lifetime political figure, and gave him and his family
the grandest funeral for any commoner ever. This funeral was the greatest meeting of powerful
political leaders in recorded history. A fitting end to one of the most influential, and complex
figures this world has seen.
