Bluetooth/WiFi power-on failure

WLAN/BT power-on failure Symptoms:

WLAN DL test firmware test commands fail
Bluetooth power-on test commands fail

2015 Lenovo Confidential. All rights reserved.

Step 1 for BT/Wi-Fi 2.4GHz power-on failure
– Check if the other functionality fails as well, e.g. check WLAN
“power on” if Bluetooth can not be powered on. Check Bluetooth
“power on” if WLAN can not be powered on.

– Both WLAN and Bluetooth share the same IC and most of the
circuit, so if one of the BT/Wi-Fi fails, the other should fail as well.
If only one of them fails, it is highly likely that it is not a hardware
problem and it could just that the BT/Wi-Fi is turned on through
the UI already and the test commands can not turn it on again.

2015 Lenovo Confidential. All rights reserved.

Step 2 for BT/Wi-Fi power-on failure
If both BT and WLAN fails, it is highly indicative of a hardware failure.
Location of the Bluetooth and WLAN circuit (Shown on the next few pages)
Check for any visible damage around the BT/WLAN antenna/IC area.

Step 3 for BT/Wi-Fi power-on failure
• If no visible damage can be seen, open up the shield and check for any
visible damage on the IC and components. Look for misplaced or damaged
components.

2015 Lenovo Confidential. All rights reserved.

Debugging BT / WLAN Power-up Failure
• Check clock supplies

– 48 MHz Clock: check at component C8504

• Check DC Voltages:

– Typical DC voltages in WCN3660B (U8510)area

• 1.3V
• 3.3V
• 1.8V

2015 Lenovo Confidential. All rights reserved.

Debugging BT / WLAN Power-up Failure
• Check connections WCN3660 and MSM8952

– WLAN: no probing point – use x-ray or other means to make sure

following is soldered properly
• Pins 51, 57, 58 and 64 of U8510 (these are connection points of IQ
lines)
• Pins 70, 71 and 77 of U8510(these are connection points of DATA
lines)

– Bluetooth: no probing point – use x-ray or other means to make sure

following is soldered properly
• Pins 19, 24 and 29 of U8510 (these are connection points of control,
SSBI and data lines)

2015 Lenovo Confidential. All rights reserved.

Debugging BT/WLAN low TX power
• Probe and measure the output power at the antenna
contact area and see in a spectrum analyzer if you see
if the phone is transmitting any power
• Please measure the output power in BP-tools mode
using the latest QRCT and procedures described in the
following link

Bluetooth/WiFi TX/RX RF failure
– BT/Wi-Fi TX/RX RF failure
• Symptoms:
– Wi-Fi Radiated TX test value out of limits
– Bluetooth radiated TX test value out of limits
– Wi-Fi scan test fails
– Bluetooth ping test fails

2015 Lenovo Confidential. All rights reserved.

Step 1 for BT/Wi-Fi TX/RX RF failure
• Look for visible damage of
the BT/WiFi Antenna,
Antenna Contacts and
BT/WiFi circuits
5 GHZ WIFI

2.4GHZ WIFI

2015 Lenovo Confidential. All rights reserved.

Step 2 for BT/Wi-Fi TX/RX RF failure
– If there is no visible sign of antenna damage and antenna contacts
damage, it's most likely something wrong in the BT/Wi-Fi chips or
circuits.
– Open up the shield and look for misplaced or damaged RF front-end
components. Please refer to the previous slide describing the layout of
the WLAN circuit.
– It is recommended to probe the amplitude of the TX signal along the RF
path to look for the failure component.

FM TROUBLESHOOTING

2015 Lenovo Confidential. All rights reserved.

Debugging FM RSSI failure

•If FM RSSI is out of limits

1. Check whether the headset connection between the phone and the FM signal generator
are correctly done
2. Check and make sure that the headset jack is not damaged
3. Check there is no damage on audio flex, and audio flex is well inserted into connector
J1471
4. Then check for any visible damage around the FM antenna/Antenna matching
components
5. (For non-DTV variant) Open up the DTV shield and check whether R4755 placed correctly
(For DTV variant) Open up DTV shied and check whether C4763, C4764, L4750, S4750,
placed correctly, and check S4750 voltage 2.85V

2015 Lenovo Confidential. All rights reserved.

Debugging FM RSSI failure
•If FM RSSI is out of limits
6. Then open up the WIFI/BT shield and check whether the FM Rx matching components
placed correctly/damaged
7. Then Check connections between WCN3660B and MSM8953:
FM: no probing point – use x-ray or other means to make sure following is soldered
properly
•Pins 61 of U8510 (FM Rx RF line)

Debugging DTV RSSI failure
If DTV RSSI is out of limits
1.Check if the headset connection between the phone and the DTV signal generator are
correctly done
2.Check and make sure if the headset jack is not damaged and the flex is correctly inserted
into J1471.
3.Probe the amplitude of the TX signal along the RF path to look for the failure component
4.Check 37.4MHz XO output
5.Check the voltage
• DTV_LDO_1P2 : C1710,C1712,C1713,C1714 pin B2 should be 1.2v
• VREG_L6_1P8 : C1715,C1711 should be 1.8v

7. Check X-ray if any solder issue under U1700(DTV MMIC:FC8300W)

Charging Path – Troubleshooting
In the event of charging issues :
1.Do visual inspection on micro USB connector, battery connector and battery pack.

2.Check charging voltages along the charging path.

● Measure USB_PWR charger input voltage at C1401. The voltage should be around 5V with regular chargers
and around 9V with turbo chargers.
● Check VPH_PWR voltage at C1325. It should be higher than 2.1V and lower than 4.35V.
● Check the battery voltage at C1422. It should be higher than 2.1V and lower than 4.35V. If the battery is below
2.1V, there maybe a short in the circuit somewhere and the battery protection circuit has been triggered.

3.Check battery thermistor

● Do visual inspection on Camera Flash Flex connection. It has battery thermistor on it.
● Battery temperature should be in the range of 0ºC ~ 45ºC to be fully charged. Check the thermistor voltage at
the test point (BAT_CON_TEMP). It should be around 1.35V at room temperature (25ºC).

Light sensor and proximity sensor
1. Check the inspection of the sensor whether it was damaged in physical.
2. Check the rubber of the sensor whether it was assembled in the right place.
3. Measure the power of the sensor at C2505. It should be around 2.8V.
If the power is not correct, then check PM8953 (U1002).
4. Measure the power of the sensor at C2506. It should be same to VPH_PWR.
If there is no power at C2506, the PCB trace may damaged.
5. Check the resistace and voltage of R2520,R2526 and R2502. Their resistance should be 2.2K 2.2K and 10K
respectively, and their voltage should be around 1.8V.
If the power is not correct, then check PM8953 (U1002).
6. Measure the I2C signal of the sensor at VR2500 and VR2501.
Resolder a new sensor to check the function if the I2C signal was right.
If nothing captured, Check the Sensorhub(U2520).

Acceleration sensor
1. Measure the power of the sensor at C2501. It should be around 1.8V.
If the power is equal or close to 0 V. We should take off the sensor and measure the power again. In case a short
circuit of the IC is presented.
Check PM8953 if the power is still 0V.
2. Measure the I2C signal of the sensor at R2525 and R2526.
Resolder a new sensor to check the function if the I2C signal was right.
