About Me
Directions: This activity is called “About Me”. Complete each line to make an
autobiographical poem.
About Me
I’m good at giving to others the “empathy”
I used to be restless and immature,
But now I’m out from that nature
I am capable of letting people to think anything about me
If you think I don’t deserve anything
Then I’ll give you respect and wouldn’t be wondering
Coz I know a lot about my self too well
I like staying inside my room
But I don’t think I’ll last staying all-day long
I know a lot about world histories and notable people from other nations
Yet I know nothing about solving complex Algebraic equations
I admire small but simple things
I don’t categorize to whom I should give my respect
I believe that whether they respect me or not, I’ve done my part

What’s More
Directions: Answer the following questions that follow.
1. What do you think the word “drive” symbolize and why do you think it is repeated in the
third and fourth stanzas?
Answer: The use of the word “drive” was to describe the undisturbed fact that we are all just
passersby in this world. From being born as a baby to being a toddler, we became teenagers
who do lots of nasty things until we mature and become grown adults and at last, to become
an old citizen who learned so much in life and someone who has achieved something far. But
demise seemed to be a naturally occurring phenomenon of the human life cycle and is the
people’s final destination.
2. What have you observed in the final stanza? Do you think the language and the description
changed from concrete to abstract?
Answer: The final stanza’s description indeed has changed from concrete to abstract and is
filled with absurdities, and complexities pertaining to both lines. It was being stressed that
those sightings were witnessed as the persona rides the carriage with the gentleman called
“death". At the same time, the sense of contradiction is present because of the phrase
"centuries passed" and the word "feels". Ironically, the ride was like in a swift of a motion
that ended like a blip of radar but it still remains a question to the persona of the poem
because, after all these years, "death" is still a mystery to her.
3. In line 2, stanza 6, the verb feels is in the present tense. Why do you think it is in the
present tense as compared to the other verbs of the poem? What does it show about the poet’s
perception of death?
Answer: The reason why the verb “feels” is is still in the present tense is because even after
all the things she’s done in order to explore death’s nature, it still remains to be a mystery for
her that no one can solve; an unsolved puzzle where the missing pieces are yet or can never
be found.

What I have Learned
1. How was death described in the poem? Identify the words used by the author to describe
death.
Answer: The phrase “his civility” that can be found in the poem can make you think: like a
gentleman who asks you for a ride, the word “death” in the poem was being perceived as
formal and polite. While everyone thinks it could be a sudden event that happens to
someone’s life, well, not every time. Death also knows how to be civil by letting someone
know that he is about to die and that’s unavoidable.
2. What is the role of immortality in the poem?
Answer: The poem's use of immortality is to raise questions about the existence of human
consciousness after death. It is the second character to be portrayed in the poem in order to
ease the idea of death. That death is not the end, but rather a beginning of a new journey
afterlife.
3. How is death personified in the poem?
Answer: Dickinson actually personifies Death as a gentleman who kindly stops to collect the
speaker in his carriage. Here, however, dying has largely preceded the action, and its physical
aspects are only hinted at.

ordinary with the extraordinary, dream life with waking life, reality and unreality.
False 3. Constructs of time follow typical Western conventions. For instance, stories may
be told in spiraling shapes rather than in straight lines.

Song: Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love For You by George Benson
< lyrics >
If I had to live my life without you near me
The days would all be empty
The nights would seem so long
With you I see forever, oh, so clearly
I might have been in love before
But it never felt this strong

Our dreams are young and we both know
They'll take us where we want to go
Hold me now, touch me now
I don't want to live without you
Nothing's gonna change my love for you
You oughta know by now how much I love you
One thing you can be sure of
I'll never ask for more than your love
Nothing's gonna change my love for you
You oughta know by now how much I love you
The world may change my whole life through
But nothing's gonna change my love for you
If the road ahead is not so easy
Our love will lead the way for us
Like a guiding star
I'll be there for you if you should need me
You don't have to change a thing
I love you just the way you are
So come with me and share the view
I'll help you see forever too
Hold me now, touch me now
I don't want to live without you

Explanation: For someone born in the 21st century, being into old romantic songs from the
70s was never the trend. However, it seems like I’ve been blown by some sort of strange
wind. Ever since I was 6, listening to George Benson’s Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love
For You has always been fascinating. Even after how many years have already passed, it still
topped my favorite song playlist, and would listen to it using its 1-hour-loop version
whenever I feel like I want to meditate or concentrate on studying my lessons. As much as I
only want to keep it a secret, the song also reminds me of my late father. Demise had already
called him while I was very young. And I can still vividly recall my last moments with him as
I say my last promises to him on his deathbed; thinking I was a little too late because he
couldn’t talk and open his eyes anymore and all he could do is listen and tear up. Growing up,
I’ve set Benson’s song as a theme song dedicated to my father. That no matter how many
years may pass, the memories we’ve made will be stored eternally deep inside me and my
love for him will never change. It will always be the same. I stand for it.
What Is It
1. Who is the persona talking in the poem? The persona in the poem is Pablo Neruda and
he is talking to the love of his life: his wife.
2. What do rose of salt, topaz, and carnation Rose, topaz, and carnation are the
symbolize? stereotypical symbols of beauty. But what the
speaker is what to imply is that his love for
his wife is “beyond” the stereotypes of what
a typical love can do. That his love is way

deeper and more genuine than how it should
be done.
3. What do you think is the meaning of the The third stanza is communicating how the
3rd stanza? persona’s love can be so unconditional. It
does not set any prerequisites or any
qualifications in terms of knowing who the
person can be, without letting go of each in
spite of the problems and outraging emotions
it reflects. Loving for him is about prevailing
the goodness and pureness coming from the
heart itself and not on anything else.
4. To what sense does the second stanza The second stanza is all about emphasizing
appeal to? the love that does not exist externally but
rather exists internally. Saying "love is blind"
was a wrong statement subjected on love
from my point of view. Because when we
love, it is beyond what our senses can do:
beyond what the eyes can see, what the nose
can smell, what ears can hear, and what our
skin can feel. It is completely etched inside
and not being displayed outside.
5. What is the central idea of the poem? On Neruda, to love someone else is to love
them with honesty and faithfulness. On top
of that, the persona also wants the readers to
understand that love isn’t all about rainbow
and glitters type of story. It is a white-
schemed canvass stained with pure black tint.
Because to love someone, both must be able
to stand the test of time amid the emotions
which both party have that are capable of

destroying the both of them.
What I Have Learned
Directions: Answer the questions below.
1. What is the most striking part of Sonnet XVII? Why?
Answer: I honestly couldn’t choose a specific part on which one would be the most striking
part, but I’d say that the poem itself hits different to me knowing that the persona is so deeply
in love with the person to whom he dedicated the poem. Indeed, old-fashioned faithfulness
remained to be the best compared to today’s generation. Though I am not stereotyping or
judging the way they love but most the couples nowadays have cheating issues and it is kind
of usually happens.
2. Which lines appeal to you? Why?
Answer:“I don’t love you as if you were a rose of salt, topaz, or arrow of carnation…” This
line appeals to me the most. It’s the line in the poem which makes your curiosity arise and
urges you to read more of it. This line is also proof that the persona’s love for his wife isn’t
that shallow. “I love you because you are beautiful”, “I love you because you attract me”,
these lines don’t validate that your love is true. You still have to look at what’s beyond that
window. Beyond what your senses can feel. It’s a realization that it takes a core-deep love
built with a strong foundation to finally realize how genuine your love can be.
