Will the development of artificial intelligence harm or benefit humankind?

Do you ever get the feeling that you are living in a movie? When it comes to the
topic of artificial intelligence, I can’t help but think about all the science fiction movies
depicting artificial intelligence taking over humanity. What exactly is artificial intelligence?
According to Britannica, Artificial Intelligence or AI is the ability of digital computer or
computer-controlled robot to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings.
How exactly would artificial intelligence influence humanity? Would it end humanity as we
know it just like how it is in a movie?

The portrayal of artificial intelligence and robots in media has put this kind of
modern technology in a negative light. The media depicts that the rise of artificial
intelligence leads to the downfall of humanity. It is understandable how a lot of people
might find the idea of artificial intelligence worrying. Stuart Russell, who teaches computer
science at the University of California, Berkeley says that in the future, many of the jobs
that require a lot of physical labor will most likely be replaced by machines with artificial
intelligence. People are afraid of losing their jobs and are questioning what would be left.
Despite this, though, there are a lot of ways that artificial intelligence can be beneficial.
Letting AI robots do the work offers low risk when it comes to tasks such as defusing a
bomb, exploring the ocean, or going to space. Artificial Intelligence also helps people with
disabilities. Sukhadeve suggests that voice-assisted AI is one of the major breakthroughs,
particularly for those who are visually impaired. It helps them communicate with others
using smart devices and describe their surroundings. AI can also be available 24/7 unlike
humans who can only work for a limited time. We can make machines work without any
breaks. All of these benefits might sound promising, but one of the long term effects of
letting machines do the work is that it makes us humans lazy, we get used to everything
becoming easier and effortlessly done for us due to the presence of AI powered
machines. When it comes to the fear of AI taking over the world, according to Macphee,
some scientists refer to the artificially intelligent systems we have today as “weak AI”
since it can only operate once given a set of rules or algorithms from the creator to follow.
It does not learn or think consciously. What AI can do as shown in science fiction movies
is decades away from being developed.

At the end of the day, Artificial Intelligence has a lot of potential in being beneficial
to humanity. As advancements on this kind of technology continue to rise, we can only
be sure that there will be a lot of changes in the world in the future. These changes might
not be similar to what we see in movies, but there will be a massive difference to the world
that we know now to what it will become in the future.
