You Never Even Call Me by My Name (Lyrics & Chords)

This song tells the story of a man who feels unseen by his romantic partner. While in a relationship, the man feels hurt that his partner never calls him by his actual name, only using terms of endearment. A friend wrote this song to capture the perfect country and western theme by adding a verse about the singer's mother getting out of prison and then getting run over by a train before he could pick her up. The overall summary captures the man's hurt at not being known by his real name and his friend's addition of more stereotypical country themes to the song.

YOU NEVER EVEN CALLED ME BY MY NAME

Steve Goodman, John Prine | Performed by David Allan Coe

C G C
It was all that I could do to keep from cryin'
F C
Sometimes it seems so useless to remain
F C
You don't have to call me darlin', darlin'
C G C G7
You never even call me by my name.

C G C
You don't have to call me Waylon Jennings
C G C
And you don't have to call me Charley Pride.
F C Am
And you don't have to call me Merle Haggard, anymore.
D G
Even though you’re on my fightin' side.

CHORUS
F C
And (so) I'll hang around as long as you will let me
C G C
And I never minded standin' in the rain.
F C
You don't have to call me darlin', darlin'
C G C G
You never even call me by my name.

I've heard my name a few times in your phone book

I've seen it on signs where I've played
But the only time I got, to hear Big Ol’ John Hancotte
Is when Jesus has his final judgment day.
CHORUS

C
Well, a friend of mine named Steve Goodman
wrote that song and he told me it was the
G
perfect country & western song.
I wrote him back a letter and told him it was NOT
the perfect country and western song because
C
he hadn't said anything about Momma, or trains,
G7 C G7
or trucks, or prison, or gettin' drunk.
C
Well, he sat down and wrote another verse to the song
and he sent it to me and after reading it,
I realized that my friend had written the perfect country & western song.
And I felt obliged to include it in this performance.
The last verse goes like this here:

Well, I was drunk the day my Mom got outta prison.

And I went to pick her up in the rain.
But, before I could get to the station in my pickup truck
She got runned over by a damned old train.

CHORUS
So I'll hang around as long as you will let me
And I never minded standin' in the rain. No,
You don't have to call me darlin', darlin'
You never even call me, I wonder why you don't call me
Why don't you ever call me by my name.
