Mrs. O. H. Craft - Obituary

Minnie Bell Rosenberger, wife of Mr. O. H. Craft, was born August 30, 1859, near Ladora, Iowa, and died July 19,
1923, at Coon Rapids, Iowa. She was the only daughter of George and Sarah Rosenberger. When a child she went
with her parents to Marengo, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood and received her education. On July 4, 1882,
she was married to O. H. Craft to which union was born three children at Marengo where they grew to maturity. In
1915 the family moved to Coon Rapids which has since been their home. She leaves to mourn her death, her
husband and three children -- the latter being Mrs. Leila Meyers, Coon Rapids, Mrs. Edith Bellowe, Bend, Oregon,
and Carl H. Craft, Los Angeles, California, also four granddaughters and seven brothers. Funeral services were
conducted at the home, Rev. A. A. Mitchell officiating, and internment was made in the Coon Rapids cemetery.

The deceased was a true friend and neighbor and a kind and loving wife and mother and truly loved by all who
knew her. Words cannot portray her beautiful life.

Bertram graduated from Marengo High School as Valedictorian in 1900 and plans were underway during the fall for him to enter
Northwestern University at Evanston, IL., as he wanted to be a minister in the Methodist Church. His father’s health was failing and he
was soon bedridden and died December 4, 1900 at the age of 46. The collapse of the family support prompted Bert’s mother to ask him to
put off plans for college and stay home and manage the family farm, which he did for 4 years before he entered Northwestern University.
In the fall of 1904, just before his 23rd birthday, on September 3, 1907, he married Elsie Estelle Hibbs, daughter of William Converse
Hibbs and Sarah Barbara Durr, born 1 Aug 1865 in Fontanelle, Adair Co., IA. He had been ‘courting’ her before going to college.

He was a graduate of Northwestern University and Garrett Theological Seminary and the Divinity School of the University of
Chicago. He served as a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church in several churches in Chicago, and in Glenn Ellyn, Oak Park,
DeKalb, Rockford and Barrington, Illinois. In the summer of 1905 he rode on horseback to serve a six-point circuit in Idaho. He appeared
on the census of 1900 at Iowa Co., IA; and 1910 at Chicago, Cook Co., 1920 at Glen Ellyn, Du Page Co., and 1930 at Maywood, Cook
Co., IL.

Mary Eda TORRENCE, daughter of William Wilson TORRENCE M. D. and Hattie Jane 'Jennie' GASSNER, on 4 Sep 1914 at Mt.
Pleasant, Henry Co., IA. He died on 5 Jan 1952 at Lewis Gale Hospital, Roanoke, VA, of a heart condition. His ashes were placed in his
son Gilmore's grave site in Sunrise Burial Park, Pulaski County, VA (near Radford).

He appeared on the census of 1900 and 1910 at Iowa Co., and 1920 and 1925 at Fayette, Fayette
Co., IA; and 1930 at Radford, VA. As a child he rode the 2 1/2 miles to school with the other children
in the family in a little buggy pulled by a pony. When he finished grade school he began full time
work on the farm as his father had died when he was 12. In 1904, when he was 16, the farm was sold
and the family moved to a small acreage on the edge of town, and Charles went back to school. He
graduated in 1908, with a scholarship to Iowa Wesleyan College at Mt. Pleasant. He had to miss that
next year of college because of illness. The next fall the remaining family moved to Mt. Pleasant and
their mother kept house for Charles, Gilmore, and Stockton until they graduated. Charles studied for
the ministry at Garrett Biblical Institute at Evanston, Illinois.

After two years at Garrett he married Mary Eda Torrence, whom he had met at Iowa Wesleyan.
While at Garrett he served as a student minister at several churches in the Chicago area, including one
at McKinley Park. After completion of the courses for the ministry at Garrett, plus some courses
Charles Baumer Swaney towards a Master's degree at Northwestern, he became a minister at the Methodist Church at Dunlap,
Peoria Co., IL. He never was ordained. Then, in 1917, he went to Upper Iowa University, Fayette, IA, as a Professor
of History. He continued with his graduate studies at Northwestern, and on June 20, 1927, received his Doctor of Philosophy. His doctoral
thesis was published as "Episcopal Methodism and Slavery, with Sidelights on Ecclesiastical Politics." He then taught history at Radford
College in Radford, Virginia from 1927 until poor health forced him to retire in 1951.

In the years just prior to his death Charles wrote a Swaney Family History, recalling his life, and telling what he knew of his
ancestors. His history was published in 1997 by his son, David.

Mary Eda TORRENCE was born on 3 Dec 1893 at Ottawa, La Salle Co., IL. She died on 25
Oct 1978 at Warner, Muskogee Co., OK. She appeared in the census of 1900 at Deadwood,
Lawrence Co., SD; 1910 at Mt. Pleasant, Center Twp., Henry Co., 1920 and 1925 at
Fayette, Fayette Co., IA; and 1930 at Radford, VA. About six months after Mary's birth, her
family moved to the Black Hills area of South Dakota. She lived in Deadwood or Spearfish,
South Dakota until 1904 when the family moved to Denver, Colorado. After her father died the
family moved to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, so that the children could attend Iowa Wesleyan
College. She married Charles Baumer Swaney on September 4, 1914. Following the death of
Charles, she alternately spent time with her children or worked as a 'companion' for invalid
women. In 1958 she 'retired' and spent time with her ailing brother Gerald in California and then
with her ailing sister Margaret in Florida. She remained in Florida for several years
following Margaret's death. She then moved to Warner, Oklahoma, to live with her son,
David. She died in Warner on October 25, 1978. Her ashes are buried in the grave site of her son
Gilmore, and husband Charles, in Sunrise Burial Park, Pulaski County, Virginia (near
Radford).

Bachelor of Divinity degree. During this third year he was also taking courses at Northwestern University, Evanston, toward his M. A.
degree, which he received June 13, 1917. After his marriage to Ruth, the young couple left immediately for their first church charge at
Linton, North Dakota. He subsequently served pastorates at Clearing, Chicago, Joliet and Chicago Lawn.

After his marriage to VeNona, he served pastorates in Batavia, Oak Park, Tampico and Ashton, Illinois. Upon retirement in 1960 he
and VeNona moved to Avon Park, Florida. In 1969 they moved to Asbury Towers, a Methodist retirement condominium complex in
