characteristics and uses.

WHAT IS IT: KINDS OF SIMPLE MACHINES (Q3 / WEEK6)

Simple Machines Description

The inclined plane is a simple machine that has a
sloping surface. It lessens the effort exerted in
transporting weight over a distance and height.
The lever is a device which has a fulcrum or a pivot
point, the effort and where force is applied, and the
resistance end where the load is located.
The wedge is a double inclined plane that is
sharpened to an end. It adds more force to the effort
as it goes through a longer
The screw is a form of inclined plane that is wrapped
around a central shaft.
The pulley is a modified wheel and axle. It is a
special type of wheel that has a rope sliding on the
groove of the wheel. The groove prevents the rope
from sliding.
The wheel and axle has the same appearance with a
pulley, but it has wheel that is fixed to the axle, like
in the steering wheel of a car.

What can I do?

Exercises 1: Multiple Choice. Choose the letter of the best answer. Write
your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

1. Which statement best describes a lever?

A. A tool composed of a rigid bar that rests or rotates on a fulcrum.
B. It cuts and slice objects.
C. It is a tool used to move heavy objects.
D. It is a tool that is used to tighten or fasten objects together.
2. A man with a wheelchair wants to get inside a building, what should he use
to easily get inside the building?
A. Ramp of the building C. Stairs of the building
B. Slides D. Pulley

3. How long have inclined plane been around?

A. Since 2000 C. Hundreds of years
B. Since 1900 D. Thousands of years
4. Which of the following is an example of inclined plane?
A. C.

B. D.

5. What kind of simple machine can be used to cut, tear, or break and can be
used to hold objects together?
A. Wedge
B. Inclined Plane
C. Pulley
D. Wheel and Axle

Exercise 2: Identify all the activities using an inclined plane by putting a

check on the space provided.

_______1. There are 10 sacks of rice and boxes of grocery items to be loaded to
a track.
_______2. Father will transfer a load of sand from the road to your yard.
_______3. You are assigned to assist your classmate with a wheelchair to enter
the building.
_______4. The flag will be raised for the flag ceremony.
_______5. The janitor will cut the plywood for the bulletin board.

What I Have learned

➢ Machines are used to transform, transfer energy, multiply speed or

force, and change the direction of the force.
➢ Simple machines do work in one movement or a one-type-of-work
easing device.
➢ There are three classes of levers. It is determined according to the
arrangement of its parts.
➢ Inclined plane is use thousands of years ago.
➢ A wedge can be used in many ways; to cut (knife), to split (axe), to
tighten and to hold back (doorstopper), to hold together (nail) and to
scrape (blades on the farm grader).
➢ Wedges are used to split things.
