1. Introducing solar car battery charging technology

- Electric vehicles, or EVs, currently make up only a small percentage of all
vehicles sold worldwide but most major automakers are now developing
Electric Vehicles (EVs) and plug-ins. hybrid (PHEV), it is expected that the
development of EVs will be more explosive in the next 5 to 10 years. Many
car buyers consider an EV or PHEV a reasonable choice, but concerns about
price, charging, and range anxiety keep many people confused. Now, with
the cost of EVs falling, plus the benefits of low maintenance and extremely
low operating costs compared to traditional petrol and diesel vehicles, EVs
are becoming more and more attractive to consumers. common buyers.

- Especially for those who have rooftop solar or are considering using solar
to charge an electric vehicle with your own solar energy. Charging with your
own electricity can essentially eliminate the 'fuel' cost of an EV altogether.
However, in practice, this is not always as easy as you think. In this article,
we discuss the available household EV chargers, analyze the different
charging (time) options to suit a variety of lifestyles, and consider the

5
limitations of the use of rooftop solar cells and home batteries for EV
charging.

- Recently, Hyundai Motor Group has announced that it will provide a

charging system Environmentally friendly solar energy by charging the
battery through solar panels arranged on the roof or hood of the car.
Solar charging technology is being developed to support the vehicle's main
source of energy, improve range (on electric vehicles) and reduce CO2
emissions. This Hyundai energy technology can be applied to all types of
vehicles, including electric and hybrid vehicles, thereby improving fuel
efficiency.

- Jeong-Gil Park, Executive Vice President, Engineering Design, Hyundai

Motor Corporation, said: “It is our prediction that in the future, different types
of power generation technologies will be developed and Applicable on car,
including solar charging system. In it, we have been researching our own solar
charging technology. A special feature is that our energy technology can also
be integrated into vehicles using internal combustion engines, which is the
first technology in the world . In terms of energy, this will allow us to develop
applications in cars, turning them from simply passive devices that consume
energy, to a device that can generate energy that reduces the burden. for the
environment.

- According to the plan, Hyundai Motor Group will launch three generations
of this technology in commercial vehicles in turn after 2019, to help meet
global regulatory goals and improve vehicle fuel efficiency. In the first
version, this system was applied on hybrid models. The vehicle is equipped
with silicon energy-collecting panels for the ability to charge from 30 to 60%

6
of the battery capacity per day, depending on weather conditions as well as
other factors.

- After that, Hyundai will continue to develop a second version using semi-
transparent solar panels to make a panoramic sunroof for the car. This will be
applied to vehicles with internal combustion engines, the first in the world.
Different from the first-generation system, the second-generation system uses
semi-transparent solar panels applied to the vehicle's panoramic sunroof.

- At this time, Hyundai Motor Group is testing the third generation of the
system, which promises to be installed on the roof and hood of electric
vehicles. Includes a structure that mounts solar panels on the bonnet and hood
combined to maximize power. Hyundai Motor Group will launch the first
generation of this technology into its vehicles after 2019 to help meet global
regulatory goals and improve vehicle fuel efficiency.

2. Classification of EV chargers combined with solar

power

2.1 Combined solar inverter and EV charger

7
- A recent technology is a combined solar inverter and EV charger that can
charge EVs directly from rooftop solar power. The integrated EV charger and
solar inverter is a smart solution that eliminates the need for a separate EV
charger along with additional wiring and potential electrical upgrades. The
only disadvantage is that the inverter must be installed in the garage or near
the car.

- There are many options available with Solar Edge being the first mainstream
inverter manufacturer to offer a unique 2-in-1 solution that can be charged
from only solar electricity or in boost mode , copper can be charged. from both
solar and grid power.

2.2 Some Recommended Home EV Chargers for Use Today
2.2.1 Zappi V2

Zappi V2 'smart' electric vehicle charger from My Energygie

- Myenergie's Zappi V2 charger is one of the most popular and smart EV

chargers on the market. It's a smart device with three different charging
modes, eco, eco + fast. It can also be set up as a single-phase or 3-phase
charger with 1-phase charging rates from 1.4 to 7kW and 3-phase from 4.1 to
22kW.
9
- In Eco mode , it will charge your EV with most of its self-generated solar
power while minimizing the amount of grid electricity used. In Eco+ mode ,
the Zappi charger will quickly adjust the charging rate to use only your own
excess solar energy and will not push any mains power. This means it will
pause charging if your household is consuming all its solar power or the
weather is very bad. In Fast mode, Zappi will charge your car to its fullest
regardless of the solar generator or household consumption.

2.2.2 EO Mini PRO 2

- EO is the leading UK manufacturer of EV chargers and the new Mini Pro is

a second generation ultra-compact smart EV charger. Like its larger sibling,
the EO basic, the mini is top-notch quality but comes at a price to match,
though if you want a small discrete, modern charger with smart charging
options, it's worth it. hard to ignore. It has a maximum charging capacity of
7kW or 32A but can be reduced if your supply circuitry is limited. It is set up

10
and controlled over Wifi via the EO app and shows you the current charging
rate, and logs your charging history.

EO Mini Pro 2 smart app with charging options

- The EO mini Pro 2 offers three charging options, off-peak charging, solar
charging, and scheduled charging that can be configured to suit your
requirements.

2.2.3 Wallbox Quasar – Two-way charger

- For those interested in cutting-edge technology, the Wallbox Quasar is the

first bidirectional EV charger designed for home use, and the smallest of its
kind to offer advanced bidirectional charging. It has a maximum power rating
of 7.4kW (32A) but it is important to note that it is only compatible with
vehicles with a vehicle connector.

11
As explained earlier, bidirectional chargers can offer the unique advantages
of V2G technology but these are the early days of this emerging technology,
so some investigation will be required. to make sure its features can be used in
your state or region. The new Nissan Leaf is one of the few cars with V2G
capabilities. In Australia, regulatory approvals for two-way chargers are about
to be approved along with some V2G testing already underway.

2.2.4 Single-phase and three-phase grid power supplies

- There are two main types of grid connections available for homes, single-
phase and 3-phase. Single-phase electrical connections are typically limited to
a maximum of 15kW or 63A, while 3-phase connections can provide up to
36kW.

- Most homes in Australia, Aisa and the US have single-phase, 240V power,
which means the maximum total energy that can be supplied from the grid is
12kW to 15kW (50A to 63A). However, you cannot use this full capacity to
charge the EV or you will not be able to use any other devices at the same
time. If you did, every time you use the toaster or microwave, the mains
switch will trip due to overload. For this reason, most single-phase EV
chargers are limited to 32A or about 7kW. This really isn't bad unless you
really need fast charging indoors.

-On the other hand, most commercial businesses have 3-phase power, so one
or more 22kW high-power electric vehicle chargers can be installed,
depending on the electrical connectivity of the building.

3. Working principle of some EV chargers combined

with solar energy

12
3.1 Combined solar inverters and EV chargers

3.2 Smart EV Charger

- If you have installed solar on your roof, you can use smart EV chargers to
maximize your self-usability. Essentially, this device will monitor your solar
power generation, and instead of outputting excess solar energy to the grid, it
will transfer it to your EV charger. This way you won't lose power from the
grid during bad weather or intermittently.
- How smart EV chargers work – When you plug your EV into a standard
home charger, the charger will generally draw the maximum amount of energy
possible to charge the vehicle. Most charged dedicated EVs are rated at 3.5kW
to 7kW although the amount of solar you generate can be much less,
13
especially when the weather is cloudy. An EV charger, on the other hand, uses
a special CT sensor mounted near your mains connection point to monitor the
flow of energy to and from the grid. When it detects any solar energy entering
the grid, it will allow the EV charger to start charging at that specific rate.
However, this can change constantly due to variations in power consumption
and solar power, so the EV charger is programmed to increase the charging
rate up and down to match the amount of solar energy. excess sky.
3.3 Bidirectional Charger
- An emerging technology that will be deployed in the next few years is
Vehicle to Grid or V2G, which uses what is known as a two-way charger .
This sounds complicated, but it simply allows power to flow to and from your
electric vehicle. Normally, chargers transfer power in one direction during
charging, but bidirectional chargers can draw power from your vehicle if
required to power your home or help balance the grid. during times of high
demand – this capability is known as Vehicle to Grid (V2G).
Vehicle to Grid technology uses a bidirectional charger that can allow EVs to
be used for backup power.

- The current problem with grid-connected vehicle technology lies not in the
chargers, but in the limited number of compatible electric vehicles. For V2G
to work, you must have a vehicle that can accept two-way charging, and there

14
are currently only a handful of V2G-compatible EVs on the market. This
technology will become a game changer in the near future and offer a full
range of services from backing up your home during a power outage to
providing grid-tied credits and rebates. Generous for power supply during
times of high demand. It may also allow owners to participate in and
programs (VPP).
4. Calculate the fuel economy generated by the solar
battery
- The electric cell battery uses a Lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 35-
100kWh.
- Poly PSP 330w solar battery, the area of each solar panel is 2m 2 . When
installing 20 solar panels, the area to be installed is 40 m 2 then the maximum
power achieved is 6.6kW with voltage calibrated 220v through the smart grid.
4.1 AC 11kW . Normal Charger
- The capacity is 11kW , at this charging speed the car will take 3-9 hours to
fully charge.
- When charging during the day with the combination of the solar battery
charging system, we save about 19.8-59.4kWh of energy consumption.
4.2 DC 30kW . Quick Charge
- The capacity is 30kW, at this charging speed the car will take 1-3 hours to
fully charge.
- When charging during the day with the combination of the solar battery
charging system, we save energy consumption of about 7.7-22kWh.
4.3 DC 60kW . Quick Charge
- The capacity is 60kW, at this charging speed the car will take 30-100
minutes to fully charge.
- When charging during the day with the combination of the solar battery

15
charging system, we save energy consumption of about 3.3-11kWh.
4.4 Super fast charging DC 250kW
- The capacity is 250kW, at this charging speed the car will take 18
minutes for a distance of about 180km
- When charging during the day with the combination of the solar
battery charging system, we save energy consumption of 2kWh.
