Tehri Dam and Hydro Power Plant is a 1,000MW hydro power project. It is situated on Bhagirathi waterway/bowl in
Uttarakhand, India. The venture is presently active . It has been created in single stage. The venture development started in
1978 and consequently went into business activity in 2006.
DESCRIPTION
The project was developed by THDC India and is currently owned by NTPC with a stake of 74.49%.The hydro
reservoir capacity is 3,540 million cubic meter. The gross head and net head of the project are 231.5m and 188m
respectively. The total number of penstocks, pipes or long channels that carry water down from the hydroelectric
reservoir to the turbines inside the actual power station, are 4 in number. The penstock length is 1,040m. The
penstock diameter is 5.75m. The project generated 3,568 GWh of electricity. The project cost is $1,620m.
The Tehri dam, a 260.5 m-high earth and rockfill dam, impounds water 44 km along Bhagirathi River
and 25 km along Bhilangana River, creating a dead storage of 925 Mm3 and live storage of 2,615 Mm3,
making a total storage capacity of 3,540 Mm3. Impoundment commenced in 2005. The Tehri reservoir
operates between a 835 masl maximum operating level and a 740 masl minimum operating level. The
crest elevation is 815 masl and together the chute spillway and the four vertical shaft spillways have a
discharge capacity of 15,540 m3/s.
The Tehri underground powerhouse hosts four Francis turbines of 250 MW each, which benefit from a
gross head of 231.50 m. The power plant has a design power discharge of 584 m3/s.
DEVELOPMENT STATUS
The project construction commenced in 1978 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 2006.
The Tehri reservoir serves multiple purposes besides storing water to produce 6,200 GWh
of annual electricity generation. It provides irrigation to an additional area of 270,000
hectares as well as supporting the existing irrigated area of 604,000 hectares.
The USD 1 billion complex comprises the 1,000 MW Tehri hydropower plant, the 400
MW Koteshwar plant (commissioned in 2012) and the 1,000 MW Tehri pumped storage
plant (expected to be commissioned in 2018 ).
