The Influence of Using ELLLO Application Toward Students’ Listening Skill
     A. INTRODUCTION
English is a foreign language in Indonesia which is a subject at several levels of
education. Besides being used for communication, the function of English in the context of
education is to build relationships, share information and appreciate the aesthetic language in
English culture (Depdiknas, 2007). Like many other languages, there are also four main skills in
English languages: those are listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Listening is the ability to identifyand understand what others are saying. The first skill
that students must learn is listening because it is the most basic of the four English skills
(listening, speaking, reading, and writing). This is supported by the statement from Nunan (1998)
that listening is a basic communication skill. In addition, listening is not used much in the
classroom. Based on the syllabus, the time allocated for listening is around six times forty-five
minutes in a semester. Another problem, the first is that students cannot interpret spoken English
words, phrases, and sentences properly, the second is that students do not have background
knowledge of audio content in English, and the third is that they cannot identify words in English
and sentences with high speed.
To overcome the problems that arise, it is recommended for teachers to have several
types of techniques and media in learning, so that students can enjoy learning English, especially
in listening skills. To make listening learning more interesting and not boring, we can use media.
Media is usually used as a support in teacher-centered teaching. There are many choices of
media that we can use, such as audio, video, or visual form. The latest ones are computers and
smartphones that contain applications for teaching and learning English. One of the applications
that can be used for teaching Listening is ELLLO (English Listening Lesson Library Online). It
is an educational mobile application free listening activities for students in learning which are
consisting of views, one minute English, mixer, grammar, news center, idioms, and step (short
narrated articles with academic English. Each listening activity is facilitated with scripts,
quizzes, and vocabulary knowledge.
Based on the descriptions and conditions which were described above, this investigation
will be continued to be conducted under the title of "The influence of Using ELLLO
Application Toward Students' Listening Skill at the Eighth Grade of SMKN 1 Kebun Tebu in
the Academic Year 2020/2021". The writer is going to implement ELLLO Application in
Listening, and the increasing of the listening ability of the students is expected to happen.
   B. RESEARCH CONTEXT
   a. Literature Review
Listening is one of four English skills that can improve language skills. The achievement
of mastering listening skills will help learners developing other language skills, such as speaking,
reading, and writing. Listening is not only the process of listening but also understanding the
meaning of what is said by the speaker. According to Erben Listening is an active process where
learners focus on certain features of the input and construct meaning in spoken language.
The importance of listening in communication has long been recognized. Although
listening is seldom taught in schools, researchers and educators have been aware that more time
is spent in listening than in other components of the communication process and that most school
instruction occurs in a speaking-listening context. In addition, Persulessy (1998, as cited in
Wicaksono, 2009) states, “one of the reasons for the opinion that listening tends to be neglected
is the feeling among language teacher that this skill automatically acquired by the learners as
they learn to speak language”.
The fact that Listening skills are not given more attention. Some efforts should be made
to resolve this problem. Using the ELLLO application is one of the ways to solve this problem.
One of the internet media that can be used is ELLLO. ELLLO stands for English Listening
Lesson Library Online (Beucken, 2004). ELLLO can be accessed through an application
downloaded from the playstore or the website at www.elllo.org. As a consequence, ELLLO
provides a rich volume of authentic listening materials that enable students to experience the
usage of English as a Lingua Franca.
From the explanation above, it is clear that ELLLO Application is the best alternative in
giving innovation teaching learning practices in listening for the students so that they will be
faster on understanding somone’s utterances and more enthusiastic in learning English.
   b. Relevance Studies
The title of this research is “The influence of Using ELLLO Application toward students’
Listening Skill” has not conducted yet by the researcher. The study is inspiring by some previous
study such as study entitled :
“Extensive Listening in the ELF Classroom with ELLLO” by Brett Milliner and Rasami
Chaikul. This research discuss about Extensive Listening for ELF Classroom with ELLLO
represents an effort by the authors to incorporate one ELF feature into their classroom. A study
involving a much larger number of students is being undertaken to observe the effectiveness of
the content on ELLLO for promoting listening skills and ELF awareness.
“Improving Young Leaners’ English Listening Skill through the Use of Audio Slide
Show on elllo.org” by Fatimah. This aim of this research to find out the possibility of using
audio slide show on www.elllo.org and its impacts for improving young leaners’ listening skill
and also describe its strengths and weaknesses.
“English Listening Lesson Library Online (ELLLO) as a Supporting Media in Learning
Listening” by Sukmawati Tono Palangngan, Haryanto Atmowardoyo, and Sukardi Weda. The
purpose of the study is to find out whether the use of English Listening Lesson Library Online
(ELLLO) affects’ the students’ Listening comprehension achievement and the students’
perception tow English Listening Lesson Library Online (ELLLO). The description of data
collected through the listening comprehension test showed that ELLLO is significally affecting
the students listening comprehension.
    C. RESEARCH QUESTION
Based on the problem in introduction of study which had been identified and limited, the
researcher formulates a research question for the problem as follows:
Is there any positive and significant the influence of using ELLLO Application toward
students’ listening skill?
    D. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
The research method used in this research is quantitative method with experimental
research as its design. According to Creswell quantitative method is a method aiming to test
objective theories by examining the effect of one variable to another variable. The processes of
collecting the data, analyzing the data, interpreting the result, and writing the results of a study
are required in quantitative method. Furthemore, the researcher would use the quantitative
method in the form of experimental design.
Based on Daniel, experimental designs are known as the scientific method due to their
popularity in scientific research where they originated. In this case, it is used to explore the
strength of relationships between variables of independent variable and dependent variable
namely, “using ELLLO Application” as independent variable and “students’ listening skill” as
dependent variable. In this study, the researcher uses one of the three types of experimental
research designs which is appropriate for the research, namely quasi-experimental research
design. Quasi experimental research design is usually used to discover a causal relationship
between two variables. In this case, quasti-experimental research design is used to find out the
effect of using ELLLO Application as the variable one, on students’s listening skill as the
variable two. It has both pre-tests and post-test and experimental and controlled classes.
