Column Jacketing Design for Seismic Retrofit

This document describes the design of column jacketing to retrofit an existing column. The column is 360x360mm with an unsupported length of 3.83m and insufficient capacity for the ultimate axial load of 1036.834kN. After calculating required reinforcement and checking for eccentricities and interaction, the design calls for jacketing with 2.45% longitudinal reinforcement and 8mm lateral stirrups at 150mm spacing to increase the capacity to 5146.889kN.

6 Design of Column Jacketing

Existing size of column = (360 × 360) mm

Unsupported length = 3.83 m
Now, Before Retrofit:
Ultimate axial load (𝑃𝑢 ) = 1036.834 kN
Existing main reinforcement in column =
(𝐴𝑠𝑐 ) = 8 − 16𝑚𝑚𝜙 = 1608.5 𝑚𝑚2
Concrete grade by NDT = M20
𝑓𝑐𝑘 = 20 𝑀𝑃𝑎 :Before Retrofitting
𝑑 ′ = 60 mm
Now,
Capacity of column = 𝑃𝑐 = 0.4 𝑓𝑐𝑘 (𝐴𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑠𝑠 − 𝐴𝑠𝑐 ) + 0.67 𝑓𝑦 𝐴𝑠𝑐 = 961.25 kN-m < 𝑃𝑢
∴ Hence, retrofitting is necessary.
After retrofitting:
Ultimate axial load on column (𝑃𝑢 ) = 1215.55 kN
Along major axis:
𝑀𝑢𝑥 = 200.5316 kN-m
𝑀𝑢𝑦 = −75.977 kN-m
And,
2 + 𝑀 2 = 246.608 kN-
Ultimate moment for design purpose, 𝑀𝑢 = 1.15 × √𝑀𝑢𝑥 𝑢𝑦

m
Check for eccentricities:
Effective length of column (𝑙𝑒 ) = 0.65 × 3.83 = 2.4895 𝑚
Then,
𝑙 𝑒
Slenderness Ratio (𝑆. 𝑅. ) = 0.56 = 4.445 < 12
𝑙 𝐷
Minimum eccentricity along major axis, 𝑒𝑥 = 500 + 30 = 26.326 mm > 20 mm
𝑙 𝛽
Minimum eccentricity along minor axis, 𝑒𝑦 = 500 + 30 = 26.3267 mm > 20 mm
Now, Minimum eccentricity in field condition:
0.05 𝐷 = 28 𝑚𝑚 > 𝑒min (OK)
Assuming effective cover = 𝑑 ′ = 60 𝑚𝑚

𝐴𝑠𝑐 = 100 × 560 × 560 = 2510 𝑚𝑚2

Check for biaxial bending:

Higher reinforcement. Since, there is large deficiencies in upper columns, we provide:

𝑀𝑢𝑥,1 = 561.971 kN-m

For square column:
𝑀𝑢𝑦,1 = 561.971 kN-m
So, 𝑃𝑢𝑧 = 0.45 𝑓𝑐𝑘 𝐴𝑐 + 0.75 × 𝑓𝑦 × 𝐴𝑠𝑐
= 0.45 × 20 × (560 × 560 − 7690.618) + 0.75 × 415 × 7690.618

Then,

So, 𝛼𝑛 = 0.667 + 1.667 × 𝑃 𝑢 = 0.667 + 1.667 × 0.235 = 1.058

Then: Provide 𝑝 = 2.45% reinforcement.
For Jacketing:-

Area of steel required = 3 × (𝐴𝑠𝑡,𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑑 − 𝐴𝑠𝑡,𝑒𝑥𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 )
