Welcome to TLE 7/8 - AFA (Animal Production)

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the


Schools Division of Himamaylan City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western
Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible
adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to


guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The TLE 7/8 - AFA (Animal Production) Activity Sheet will help you
facilitate the leaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning
Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and
learner. This will be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease
the independent learning.

For the learner:

The TLE 7/8 - AFA (Animal Production) Activity Sheet is developed to


help you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material
provides you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being
an active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the

II. Background Information for Learners

Communication within the workplace is one among the signs of a high-


performance culture. Exchanging information and concepts within a corporation is
named workplace communication. However, effective communication occurs when a
message is shipped and received accurately. In every aspect of life (both
professional and personal), effective communication is vital to success and
happiness. Effective communication within the workplace is central to all or any
business goals.
Why is communication so important in the workplace? Communication is so
important because; a) It avoids confusion, b) It provides purpose c) It builds a
positive company culture and d) It creates accountability.

Introduction
Communication is the process of exchanging information and ideas. There are many
means of communication. To be an efficient and valuable member of your workplace it’s
important that you simply become skilled altogether of the various methods of
communication that are appropriate.
For communication to occur it must pass from a sender to a receiver. This must
occur irrespective of the form of communication. For communication to be effective it must
be understood by the receiver and be able to be responded to. This means that total
communication involves speaking, reading, listening, and reasoning skills. As
communications pass from the source to the receiver there are many opportunities for its
original aiming to change or alter.
Therefore listening, reasoning and feedback is an important part of the process as it
is an opportunity for the sender to make sure the receiver has understood the message. The
other consideration is the “noise” associated with the communication – what else is
happening, what are the distractions, the baggage etc. Noise can have a big impact on the
message the receiver decodes.

1.2 Effective questioning, active listening and speaking skills are used to
gather and convey information

Effective Questions

Effective questions are questions that are powerful and thought provoking. Effective
questions are open-ended and not leading questions. They are not "why" questions, but
rather "what" or "how" questions. "Why" questions are good for soliciting information, but can
make people defensive so be thoughtful in your use of them. When asking effective
questions, it’s important to attend for the solution and not provide the solution.

Asking effective questions


If you are, for example, a line manager or supervisor, or you’re talking to a client, it is
important to create an environment where the speaker feels that their

issues/concerns/problems have been listened to. One way to do this is by asking effective
questions.

Types of questions:
Open questions – These are questions to gather information and facts. Example: ‘What
are your concerns and worries about this situation?’
Probing questions – These are questions to gain additional detail. Example: ‘Can you
explain why that matters?’
Hypothetical questions – These are questions to suggest an approach or introduce a new
idea. Example: ‘If you could get additional funding or resources, how might that help?’
Reflective questions – These are questions to check understanding. Example: ‘So would
you prioritize the most critical areas for attention first and make sure that everyone knew
what was most important?’
Leading questions –These questions are not always well received but can be used to help
a person reach a conclusion or have an idea that you feel will be beneficial. For example,
‘Had you thought about giving the project leadership role to Jennifer?’
Deflective questions –These are questions to defuse an aggressive or defiant situation by
re-directing the force of the other person’s attack.
Example: Dissatisfaction: ‘I’m not happy with this project!’
Response: ‘What can WE do to make it right?’
Closing questions – These are questions to bring agreement, commitment and conclusion.
Example: ‘When will you talk to your team and the client about this?

What is active listening?

Active listening is a way of listening and responding to another person that improves
mutual understanding. The phrase ‘active listening’ was first used by Rogers and Farson
(2015) in the 1950s. They describe it as follows:

It is called ‘active’ because the listener has a very definite responsibility. He does not
passively absorb the words which are spoken to him. He actively tries to grasp the facts and
the feelings in what he
hears, and he tries, by his
listening, to help the
speaker work out his own
problems. (Rogers and
Farson, 2015)

Speaking Skills
Speaking is an act of making vocal sounds. We can say that speaking means
to converse, or expressing one’s thoughts and feelings in spoken language. To
speak often implies conveying information. It may be from an informal remark to a
scholarly presentation to formal address.

Speaking skills are the skills that give us the ability to communicate
effectively. These skills allow the speaker to convey his message in a passionate,
thoughtful, and convincing manner. Speaking skills also help to assure that one
won’t be misunderstood by those who are listening.

The Four Speaking Skills

It is a common desire for all of us to speak a second language well. To do this we need
to know what skills are required to become a good speaker. This short article will help you to
understand four important skills that you need to develop:

1. FLUENCY. Fluency is about how comfortable and confident you are in speaking
English. If you can speak for an extended period of time, that is an indicator of
strong fluency. It is also about showing a clear connection between each point that
you are trying to make. This skill means that the listener can follow what you are
saying and does not get lost.

2. VOCABULARY. Of course, if you don’t have the words to say what you want to
say, then you cannot say it. Being an honest speaker means constantly growing
your vocabulary. The more interesting words you recognize, the stronger your
speaking skills. The best way to grow your vocabulary is to read in English and
make a note of any new words that you simply encounter during a vocabulary
notebook.

3. GRAMMAR. The dreaded G word! Grammar does matter and the fewer mistakes
you make, the better your speaking skill will be. However, do not worry about
making mistakes either! A good speaker does not have to use perfect grammar.
Certainly, though, it is a good idea to make sure that you have mastered the major
tenses.

5. PRONUNCIATION. Pronunciation is a complex area, with a lot of sub skills that


can be practiced. The basic rule of thumb is that an average speaker can speak
and be understood. A skilled speaker can use the sub skills of pronunciation to
emphasize and make the communicative effect of their speech more impactful.
The sub skills of pronunciation include: word and sentence stress, intonation,

rhythm and the use of the individual sounds of a language. A good way to practice
your pronunciation is to copy! Simply listen to how someone with good
pronunciation speaks, and try to imitate them as closely as possible.

particular information.
5. Follow-up or verbal instructions – are instructions expressed in speech rather than in

6. Face to face communication - implies that two or more individuals are physically
present to communicate with each other.
