Worksheet

The document summarizes data from a 3 meter spring board diving event where judges Shayan and Mutahar scored 8 competitors. It calculates: 1) The Pearson correlation coefficient between Shayan and Mutahar's scores is 0.909, indicating a very strong positive relationship. 2) The regression equation relating Mutahar's score to Shayan's is y = 1.14x + 0.578. 3) The Spearman rank correlation coefficient between their rankings is 0.933, indicating they strongly agree on the rankings.

1. The MA Center hosted a 3 metre spring board diving event.

The judges, Shayan and Mutahar

awarded 8 competitors a score out of 10. The raw data is collated in the following table.

Competitors A B C D E F G H
Shayan’s Score (x) 4.1 3 4.3 6 7.1 6 7.5 6
Muthahr’s score (y) 4.7 4.6 4.8 7.2 7.8 9 9.5 7.2

(a) (i) Write down the value of the Pearson’s product–moment correlation coefficient,
r.
Answer: - By using TI-84 Calculator
0.909 (3 decimal places)

(ii) Using the value of r, interpret the relationship between Shayan’s score and
Muthhar’s score.
Answer: - Very strong and positive

(b) Write down the equation of the regression line y on x.

Answer: - y = 1.14x + 0.578 (Using TI-84 Calculator)

(c) (i) Use your regression equation from part (b) to estimate Mutahar’s score when
Shayan awards a perfect 10.
Answer: 1.14 x 10 + 0.578
= 11.98 or round to 12

(ii) State whether this estimate is reliable. Justify your answer.

Answer: - No the estimate is not reliable
Outside the known the data range
Or
A score is greater than 10 is not possible

The Commissioner for the event would like to find the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient.
(d) Copy and complete the information in the following table.

Competitors A B C D E F G H
Shayan’s rank 8 1 4
Muthahr’s rank 8 1 4.5
Competitors A B C D E F G H
Shayan’s rank 7 8 6 4 2 4 1 4
Muthahr’s rank 7 8 6 4.5 3 2 1 4.5

(e) (i) Find the value of the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, r s .
Answer: - 0.933 (By TI-84 calculator)

(ii) Comment on the result obtained for rs .

Answer: - Shayaan and Mutahar strongly agree on the rank on competition

The Commissioner believes Mutahar’s score for competitor G is too high and so decreases the
score from 9.5 to 9.1.
(f) Explain why the value of the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient r s does not change.

Answer: - decreasing the score to 9.1 does not change the rank of competitor G
