1. DR WAN NOOR FAAIZAH BINTI WAN OMAR
2. PUAN IZZA SYAHIDA ABDUL KARIM

This course allows for integration of design and

manufacturing strategy in line with pre-assigned case
studies to stimulate a design for production planning
process. The step-by-step approach to various
analytical skills will guide students through design
stages until the manufacturability aspects. The full
spectrum of New Product Development (NPD) has
shared the sub topic toe=wards designing a new
concept of design in manufacturing. The software used
will bring out toward DFM in advance which followed by
industrial requirement. This course also provides
students the platform through entire motions that are
similar to an actual industrial design project and
manufacturing in advance mode.

PROMOTIONAL PRODUCT DESIGN : GIFT & PREMIUM
INTRODUCTION

As one of the promotional products, GIFTS are among the items that are always a symbol of
giving to someone and even become a product that can represent something that can be
remembered and make all happy. Happiness is present from the giving of gifts from one person
to another. There are many different types of gifts that can be graded and categorised. However,
the bestgift is that it can win human hearts and be judged to bring the intention to represent
something meaningful and have interaction between its users.

A promotional product entrepreneur manages the

Malaysian Gifts & Premium Association (MGPA) where is the Malaysia Gift Fair
organiser, which is the most significant gift and premium exhibition in ASEAN
countries.

Incepted as the “Promotional Product Design” (PPD) Award in

2010, the PPD will be entering its 11th edition in tandem with the
13th Malaysia Gifts Fair for this year 2022. The idea behind the
PPD was to provide talented individuals with the opportunity to
have their designs recognized, rewarded, and even commercialized in collaboration with established local entrepreneurs.

The vision of the Promotional Product Design Award is to provide a fair, ethical and competitive platform for professional
& student designers and from diverse background and experience to compete on, while providing them a platform of
nationwide audience to showcase their success and talents to. The PPD Award also aims to cultivate design and
innovation in promotional product industries.

DESIGN TASK
Students are required to design a Promotional Product related to GIFTS & PREMIUM. As stated above, the bestgift is
that it can win the human heart, which can be judged to bring the intent to represent something meaningful and interact
with its users. Besides that, as reflective of the design, the products should produce the meaning people personally give
to products as stated in Japanese philosophy that sees the value of a productas a journey of narrative experiences. A
reflection of a product is seen by its performance, functions, journey and stories behind a product (Idea & Design
Process).

Working within the theme, designing a promotional product related to Gift & Premium, students will advance their
knowledge on production while conducting a design research study. Students will identify an existing product, which
they can design around, to develop a new innovative solution/ function/ purpose/ needs, which enhances or creates new
value. The expected result is a proposal to participate in PPDC 2022, which will be implemented, and evenstudents
can advance it for participation in other design competitions. Students are also required to establish theirdesign criteria
based on an analysis of literature search and user research and present their design story based on their interpretation
of Semantic, Syntactic and Pragmatic analysis in design.
AIM AND OBJECTIVES

Students must understand the design needs in the manufacture and constraints of materials while carrying out systematic
design research activities in this semester's project.

The objectives that students are expected to achieve are:

1. To study latent user needs through the understanding analogy interpretations directly in the design
2. To identify advanced design for manufacturing requirements that inform the feasibility of the proposed design.
