COURSE DESCRIPTION

Who is this book for?

This book aims at first year students at Hanoi Vocational College of Technology. It is designed for
beginners who need to use English in their study and work. General English looks particularly at
the basic language functions in English and familiarizes students with various structures to use in
their daily life.

How is the book organized?

The book contains 12 Units divided into 2 levels:
o Level 1 (A 1): Unit 0 - Unit 6
o Level 2 (A2): Unit 7- Unit 12
Each Units consists of approximately eight or nine class hours of classroom material and contains
some or all of the following:
• Grammar section consisting of two or three language focus sections with practice
activities.
• Vocabulary sections which focus on common words.
'
• Reading section consisting of passages related to the topic or to the grammar aspects of
the Unit.
• Listening sections consisting of dialogues or short talks to improve listening
comprehension.
• Speaking consisting of activities which can be found integrated with grammar, reading or
vocabulary sections.
• Writing section consisting of activities which can be found related to the topic.
• Further practice section consisting of practice activities to develop study skills, some of
the format of which can be used in the final exam.

How should this book be used?

The book presents all the Units in a gradual development, from a basic grammar topic (the verb "to
be'') to a more sophisticated one (present perfect tense), so it is recommended that you go through
the units in sequential order. This will help you to understand the basic aspects first and then
proceed to more complex matters.

Is this a modern house? Is
this a house of the future?
Well, no, it isn't.
Cyril Jean's house in the south of
France is 40 years old. There are more
houses like this in the south of France.
They are called "bubble houses," and
you can see why!

Cyril Jean is a designer and he loves

round things. He collects old records and
clocks. He also collects round furniture.
And now he has a completely round
house for it all.
The centre of the house is one very big bubble. This is both the living room and dinin~
room. There are round armchairs, a round table, and a big round rug in front of a rounc
fireplace. Around the living room are three small bubbles. One bubble is a kitchen witt

38
round cupboards, another bubble is the garden room, and the third bubble is a music
room for all Cyril's old records. Upstairs there are two more bubbles- a bedroom, and a
bathroom.
The doors and windows are also round, of course. The windows are like eyes. There
aren't any curtains in the house, because Cyril likes to see the garden all the time.
Bubble houses are the idea of a Hungarian architect, Antti lovag. Lovag thinks that a lot
of modern houses are bad for us, especially tall blocks of flats. He thinks that people are
happy in round homes because they are more natural. Cyril agrees with this. "Some
people think my house is funny," he says. "But for me, this is the perfect home."

5. How many rooms are there in his house?
6. Is there a garden?

with my colleagues. They are wonderful people who have a good sense of humor, and
they are good friends too. At 3:30 I have a snack again. I usually have some tea and
biscuits.
On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday I go to the gym after work. When I get home, I
have a shower again, I prepare dinner and I watch TV for a while. I like to go to bed as
soon as possible, around 9:30.

Thursday is different because I don't go to the gym. I go out with my boyfriend every
Thursday. We sometimes go to the cinema or we go out for dinner and to have a drink.
My boyfriend's name is Daniel, he is 31 years old, and he's an architect. He likes cooking
but he doesn't like cleaning the house, so we share the housework.

six years. And we have been living toOether for two years.

On Friday night I always go out with my friends, we sometimes go to a bar and sometimes
we meet at a friend's house, but I can't be home late because I have to get up early on
Saturday to clean the house.

HOW CLARK MET HIS WIFE

The first time I ever met Clare, she was working in a clothes store in Chicago. 1 was
feeling pretty embarrassed because I had gone in to buy a scarf for my sister and there
were 20 or 30 women in there and I was the only man. I was standing in the scarves, hats
and gloves section feeling sorry for myself when Clare walked up to me and asked me if
there was anything I needed.
She looked very beautiful and was dressed elegantly. I must admit that for a couple of
seconds, I wasn't able to say anything. I just looked at her. Finally, I said, "what size
scarves do you have?" and then realized that it was quite a stupid question. I left the store
a few seconds later without buying anything.
Two days later, I was sitting in a coffee bar around the corner when I heard a voice
behind me say, "did you ever find the scarf you were looking for?" I turned around and
was amazed to see the same pretty girl from the clothes store. We laughed about it and
shared a coffee together.
Two weeks later, I was brave enough to ask Clare to go to see a movie with me. You
can imagine how unhappy ·I was when she said that she couldn't go with me. She
promised to call me another time, but l didn't believe her. The next morning, my cell phone
rang, and I recognized her number on the screen. She said she was free and asked if I
still wanted to go to the cinema. That was seven years ago and now we've been married

different countries take part in a competition, with prizes
for the best sculptures.

Reading
Read the passage. Are these sentences True (T), False (F) or Doesn't say (DS)?

White cotton T-shirts were first worn by the

US Navy in the Second World War and by
1948, every American soldier was wearing
one, too. But it was Hollywood films that
made the T-shirt really popular: actors
Marion Branda and James Dean wore
classic white T-shirts in On the Waterfront
(1954) and Rebel Without a Cause (1955).
After these films, every young man wanted
to wear one. Women didn't begin to wear
T-shirts until the end of the 1950s. In the
1959 French film A bout de souffle
(Breathless), American actress Jean Seberg
wore a T-shirt advertising an English
language newspaper. This started a new
fashion in T-shirts for women, but it wasn't
until the mid-1960s that companies like
Budweiser and Coca-Cola started using
T~shirts as "walking advertisements".

Later, the T-shirt became a way of saying something important. For example, soon after
the black American leader Angela Davis went to prison in 1970, people all around the
world were wearing T-shirts with the message "Free Angela". In the 1970s, French fashion
designer Yves Saint Laurent designed a famous blueT-shirt with his name in white letters.
Giorgio Armani has also used T-shirts in his fashion shows. And in 2001, a limited number
of white "J'adore Dior" T-shirts sold quickly at well over £100 each!

_ _ 1. In the 1940s, white T-shirts were part of a uniform.

_ _ 2. T-shirts became more popular because of two 1950s American films.
_ _ 3. Many women were wearing T-shirts in 1955.
_ _ 4. By 1960, companies were using T -shirts to advertise their products.
_ _ 5. In 1970, aT-shirt with the words "Free Angela" won a prize.
