Rules
What is Gender-Inclusive Literature?
Gender-inclusive Literature is our collective term for women’s and LGBTQIA+ literature. Women’s
literature refers to literary work written about women that promotes gender equality and inclusivity.
LGBTQIA+ literature is a collective term for literature written about LGBTQIA+ that promotes SOGIE
(Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression) awareness and inclusivity. The
empowerment of women and LGBTQIA+ must be the main theme of all entries.

Division A. Gender-Inclusive Literature for All Ages
Categories:
1. The Short Story/ Maikling Kwento entries must have a minimum of 10 and a maximum of
20 typewritten pages.
2. The Essay/ Sanaysay entries must have a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20 typewritten
pages. The category is open to informal essays.
3. The Poetry/ Tula entries must consist of a collection of a minimum of 10 and a maximum of
15 poems.
Division B. Gender-Inclusive Literature for Young Learners
Categories:
1. The Poetry for Children/ Tulang Pambata entries must have a minimum of 6 and a
maximum of 10 poems. It must be comprehensible within the grade-school reading level of
children ages 7 - 12, and can be appreciated in its oral form by younger children.
2. The Short Story for Children/ Maikling Kwentong Pambata entries must have a maximum
of 5 typewritten pages. It must be within the grade-school reading level of children ages 7 -
12.
3. The Novel for Teens / Nobelang Pangkabataan entries must range from 6 to 10 chapters,
each chapter generally containing at least 500 words. The work must be within the reading
level of readers ages 13 to 18.
How to Join?
1. The contest starts on March 31, 2021 and the deadline for submission of entries is June 20,
2021, 11:59pm PST. All entries submitted beyond the deadline will no longer be accepted.
2. The contest is open to all Filipino citizens and former Filipino citizens of all ages. PNU must
receive the submission via email ([email protected]). In the subject line, please write Gawad
Sulo and indicate the genre / category (e.g., Gawad Sulo Tula). Your email must contain:
a. The work. It must be saved as Portable Document Format (PDF), typed
double-spaced (except for poetry/tula and poetry for children/tulang pambata) and use
Book Antiqua font size 12 on a short bond paper with pagination. The author’s name
must not appear on the entry. A synopsis of the work or a description of the themes
must appear after the cover/title page of the entry.
b. Scanned FORM 1 duly notarized from recognized legal offices in the country of your

c. For former Filipinos, you must also accomplish and submit scanned FORM 2.

3. Once your submission is received, your entry will be acknowledged by the organizers via
email. Submissions with missing documents will be disqualified. Received entries are
considered final and complete; no revision may be made during the contest.
Winning Entries
The prizes, in PHP and net of taxes, are the same for all categories:
1st: ₱18,000.00
2nd: ₱12,000.00
3rd: ₱ 9,000.00
1. The winning entries shall be published in an anthology under the PNU Center for Gender and
Development. Additionally, the winning entries in the Poetry for Children/ Tulang Pambata
and Short Story for Children/ Maikling Kwentong Pambata shall be developed into illustrated
books for children and shall be made available in the market within 12 months of the
announcement of winners.
2. There can be only one winner for each prize. The winners will be formally announced by
September 30, 2021.
3. An entry may only be submitted in one category. An entry in one language category cannot
be submitted in another language category in its translated form.
4. Works which have been awarded a prize and/or previously published prior to the start of the
contest are not qualified for the awards.
5. Members of Philippine Normal University’s executive committee, board of regents, and
employees designated under PNU’s University Center for Gender and Development may not
join.
Philippine Normal University, through the University Center for Gender and Development, is
committed to produce learning resources that are gender-inclusive for the education of the Filipino.
Thus, when workforce has returned to normal, PNU shall consider adding more categories as well
as other Filipino languages to this annual awards program.
