EXPERIENCE GAINED

3.1 Operation and Maintenance works

During the period of attachment, I was able to carry out overhead line operation and

maintenance where I was exposed to different types of works. Under the operation and

maintenance department I gained the following experiences;

1. Safety procedures and precautions taken before undertaking outages.

2. Hole drilling for LV and HT poles and stay.

10
3.2 Underground Cable section works

This is the part of transmission where there is a crossing higher voltage transmission line

passing across the other. In this case, to avoid the interaction of the magnetic fields, the lower

voltage line transmission is usually transmitted underground. In this section I learned a lot and

gained the following experiences;

1. Underground cable fault location.

2. Installation and handling of underground cables.

3. Raising techniques of high voltage cables up the poles.

4. Lowering techniques of high voltage down the poles.

3.3 Design and construction works

This is the part where design and construction of electrical transmission lines is usually done. In

this section I learned every procedure concerning the same and was able to gain the following

experiences with respect to designs and line constructions:

1. Operational procedures and safety precautions while working.

2. Underground cable laying and termination.

3. LV service line installations (both 1-phase and 3-phase).

Chapter 4
4.0 SUMMARY AND RECOMMENTATIONS

4.1 Summary of attachment activities.

According to the syllabus, all what was covered during the period of industrial training

attachment was relevant to my field of study and profession choice.

The work system of the company is standard and meets the demands of its attached students.

Engineers are qualified and all is done professionally.

During this attachment period, I was based at one of the company’s offices where I was
involved in all works related to electrical engineering. This included electrical power overhead
line transmissions, meter readings, electrical installation inspection, high voltage line
management, transformer maintenance, electrical repair, design and line construction among
many others.

12
4.2 Problems encountered
4.2.1 Challenges faced.

I encountered new and practical work which I had not dealt with in theoretical study.

It was difficult to bear with the situation since I had no experience in the field.

I had more interest in theory work but when I started practice, it was a hard task to handle.

Some of the assigned areas of work were risky.

4.2.2 How I overcame

I clearly followed supervision guidance and direction in the field. I frequently asked questions

for any practical clarification.

4.3 Suggestions for improvement

I really thank and congratulate the program provided by Aldai institution for enabling me to get

to join Kenya Power and Lighting Company who have submitted positive impact and more skills

that helped me to fulfill my attachment successfully.

Through the cooperation, team work and hardworking of the supervisors who guided me in

sectors dedicated, I urge the company to adopt the same culture and spirit to produce wide better

worker in future.

13
4.4 Recommendation

The attachment is the best programme to equip the students with modern technologies thus

coming up with appropriate engineering skills applicable in the society.
