Tutorial – 5 Topic: Three phase diode rectifiers, single phase - Thyristor rectifiers
1. A 3 ph bridge rectifier, using diodes, delivers power to a load of R=10Ω at a dc
voltage of 400V. Determine the ratings of the diodes and of the 3 ph delta-star transformer. 2. A 3-pase bride rectifier charges a 240V battery. Input voltage to rectifier is 3ph, 230V, 50 Hz. Current limiting resistance in series with battery is 8Ω and an inductor makes the load current almost ripple free. Determine (a) Power delivered to the battery and the load. (b) input displacement factor, (c) input power factor, (d) current distortion factor, (e ) harmonic factor and, (f) transformer rating. 3. A 3-ph diode bridge rectifier is fed from a 480 V (line to line) AC source, to a load resistance of 25Ω in series with a 50 mH inductance. Find (a) output dc average voltage, (b) Average and rms values of diode currents. (c) RMS value of source current, (d) line power supplied from the source. 4. A thyristor is used to supply a half-wave rectified DC voltage to a resistive load of 10Ω, through a 220V, 50Hz ac supply. Find the average output voltage, current, power supplied to the load and input power factor at firing angles 300, 600and 900. 5. A 230V, 50Hz one pulse thyristor-controlled rectifier is fired at an angle of 400. If the current extinguishes at 2100, then find the circuit turn-off time, average output voltage and average output current for the loads, a. R=5Ω, L=2mH b. R=5Ω, L=2 mH and E=110V. 6. A single – phase transformer, with secondary voltage of 230V, 50Hz, delivers power to load R=10Ω through a half-wave rectifier circuit. For a firing angle delay of 600. Determine (a) Rectification efficiency, (b) Form factor, (c) voltage ripple factor (d) transformer utilization factor and (e ) PIV of the thyristor.
