Vitamin D Medication Overview

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is activated in the liver and kidneys to increase calcium and phosphorus absorption and support bone health. It is administered orally or intravenously daily to treat and prevent deficiency states. Patients taking Vitamin D should be monitored for signs of hypercalcemia like bone pain and weakness, and have their calcium and vitamin D levels checked periodically. Interactions can occur with medications like antacids, corticosteroids, and digoxin, so doses may need adjustment.
