The following listed are the salient features of Chameliya Hydropower Station (from Generation
Directorate 2075/76 NEA)
Name of Project Chameliya Hydropower Project
Project Location Balanch, Darchula District, Mahakali Zone
Employer Nepal Electricity Authority, Generation Department
Contractor M/s KHPN consortium, Korea and M/s CGGC till August
14,2019
Type of Project Peaking Run of river plant (with 6hr daily peaking)
Installed Capacity 30 MW
Discharge 36 m3/sec
Gross Head 103.70 m
Rated Net Head 94 m
Intake Side Intake
Dam/ Spillway Type Concrete Gravity, 88m crest length, max. ht. 54 m
Penstock Concrete lined and steel lined, length 302m, dia. 3.9 m
Transmission line Length 131 km, 132 kV single circuits from Balanch to Attariya
Sub-station
Turbine 2 vertical shaft, Francis, rated output 2*15.6 MW, rated speed
428.6 rpm
From the data tabulated above,
The available power can be calculated as, Pavailable = ƍgQH
or, Pavailable = 1000*9.81*36*103.7
or, Pavailable = 36.62 MW
Thus, efficiency can be calculated as,
𝑃𝑎𝑣𝑎𝑖𝑙𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 36.62
ƞh = = = 81.92 %
𝑃 30
Although the available power is 36.62 MW, we have only been able to produce 30 MW which
calculates out efficiency to be 81.92 %.
So, theoretically it can be seen that we can increase this efficiency with two ways (as density and
acceleration due to gravity are two constants):
a. Increasing head
b. Increasing discharge
Initially, the enlarge in quantity go with the flow rate can make a contribution in growing
effectivity of Francis turbine. This can be received via increasing the outlet diameter of the
runner and altering the waft attitude such that extent waft fee is maximum.
As a hydropower project, there are types of troubles to deal with at some stage in its operation.
Some of the difficulties confronted through the manufacturing organization and Chameliya
Hydropower are listed below:
1. Frequent landslide due to geographical condition which causes damage to dedicated line from
powerhouse to dam.
2. Mostly during rainy season, high concentration of sediment, debris, leaves, jute pipes, etc. in
the water causes choking of filter element, which necessitates cleaning of filters, valves, pipes,
etc. on a daily basis.
3. Due to high amount of stone and wooden log pilings in intake trash back, regular cleaning of
trash rack manually is being done on regular basis, which is time consuming and full of risk.
