2. Description of the Bromma RSX40

Spreader Function general
The Bromma RSX40 is a telescopic top lift spreader for the
handling of single ISO and Binnen containers with reach stacker.
The spreader can adjust its length to lift containers from 20’ to 40’
using ISO floating twistlocks. The telescopic spreader is of a
monobeam frame construction designed to absorb both vertical
and horizontal forces. As standard, the spreader is equipped with
4 x 10 tonnes lifting lugs in the corners of the end beams for
handling damaged containers or special cargoes.

Pile slope, tilt (option), rotation and sideshift features enable easy
location onto containers. Four ISO twistlocks engage the
containers top apertures and lock into the corner castings. All
motions of the spreader are controlled from the driver’s cab and
all commands are processed safely by the spreader logic control
system. In addition to the spreader indicator lights,(option) there
are provisions made for signals in the cab indicating the position of
the twistlocks and the landing pins status. Lifting allowance is
Main frame
monitored by the spreader and implemented on the reach stacker
to ensure safe container handling. The RSX40 is controlled with 24
V DC solenoid operated valves and inductive proximity sensors.

hydraulic unit.
The electrical system consists of a Mobile CAN Open controller
centrally placed on top of the rotator. Cable harnesses distributes
the signals to solenoids on hydraulic valves and from sensors back
to the controller. The Controller is connected to the reach stacker.

Bromma Mobile Equipment Manual

Rotator
The rotating function is achieved by a slewing ring driven by
means of two hydraulic motors and two satellite type re-
duction gearboxes. The hydraulic motors are protected by
pressure relief valves against shock loads and cavitation. They
are activated by solenoid valves. The rotation is driven at low
speed at start up or to position accurately the spreader/
container. Each gearbox is fitted with a brake and wet discs. Hydraulic
Brake release is hydraulically operated. motors

Sleving ring

Side shift
The sideshift function is achieved by means of two opposite
acting hydraulic cylinders between the spreader frame and the
carriage. This ensures equal forces, optimal and equal speed in
both sideshift directions.
The spreader frame is sideshifted on self-lubricating sliding
pads. The sideshift function enables to position accurately the
spreader onto the containers and/or to move the centre of
gravity of lifted loads up to 800 mm towards each end of the
spreader. This means that unevenly loaded containers can be
picked up and balanced.
Free resting between the carriage and the spreader main-frame
allows up to ±5° mechanical self-levelling. This enables the
machine to handle loads on uneven surfaces by adapting the
spreader angle to the container inclination.

Telescoping
The telescoping system consists of two parallel telescopic
beams running on self-lubricating sliding pads in a rectangular
box section mainframe.
The telescoping system is driven by means of a hydraulic
motor and a reduction gearbox connected to an endless chain.
The telescopic system is running symmetrically at the same
speed and stops accurately in all positions.

Twistlock sensor
Each twistlocks pair is connected by a tie-rod monitored by two
inductive proximity sensors to indicate the locked and unlocked
positions. A spring-loaded contact pin and an inductive proximity
sensor at each twistlock are used for landing control. The spreader
is fully landed (seated) onto the container when all four pins have
been depressed.

The twistlocks can only be turned when all four corners are landed
and when all four twistlocks have properly entered the corner

Warm and pressurized oil.

Always depressurize hydraulic and brake systems completely
before starting to work in the systems. Hydraulic and brake
systems are pressurized and the oil may cause personal
injuries.
Avoid skin contact with the oil, use protective gloves. Warm
oil can cause burn injuries, rashes and irritation! The oil may
also be corrosive to mucous membranes in, e.g., the eyes,
skin and throat.

IMPORTANT
Always clean the area around components and connections
before they are loosened. Dirt in oil systems causes increased
wear, resulting in subsequent material damages.
Always take action to avoid spills. In places where drain
containers cannot be used, use a pump or hose for safe
handling.
Always check that plugs seal tight before collection containers
are moved.
Handle all oil as environmentally hazardous waste. Oils freely
released cause damage to the environ-ment and may also
cause fires. Waste oils/fluids shall always be handled by an
authorized company.

Lubrication points
Lubricate the points shown below at intervals
described in Chapter 6.1 Periodic maintenance
procedures.

Twistlocks
1. Inject grease through grease fittings.
2. Brush grease on spherical bearings.

Glide plates
Expand the spreader to 40 foot position
and apply grease on all surfaces that will be in contact with the
glide plates when retracting.
Run the sideshift from side to side and apply grease on the
glide surfaces.

6.1.3.1 Tightening torques General

The tightening torques in the following table are
recommendations when tightening bolts and nuts.

When torquing using a machine, for example, bolt runner, the

tightening torque should be reduced by approx. 5%.

For mild surfaces (lower hardness than 200 HB), use washer
under both bolt head and nut. As an alternative, flange bolt or
flange nut can be used.

Tighten to the prescribed torque without stopping.

Recommended tightening torque varies depending on surface

treatment. Certain combinations of bolt and nut require
lubrication according to the table below.

6.3.1 Downloading PLC program to controller.

To download program to the controller,
proceed as follows:

1. Connect your laptop to the controller

connection serial RS232 connection by using
for instance the cable shown.
(Connector XP14 RS232, see circuit diagram
1019693 sheet 10)

2. Check the communication number of the

serial port you intend to use (Control Panel-
>System).

In this example a USB-to-Serial Bridge is used on COM1

3. Open CoDeSys and set the communication parameters (menu->options)

CoDeSys
communication
settings

Bromma Conquip 6.3-2- March 08 Rev. 00

Bromma Mobile Equipment Manual

The CoDeSys Global variable List,

‘ComponentParameters_Variables’ holds all PLC variables
that retain their value after a power cut.
Some of them need to be changed depending on characteristics
of Spreader and Reach Stacker:
RPSParameter- >StopSpeed:
Controls the precision when stopping at a telescope
position
RPSParameter- >FastSpeed:
Controls the overall speed for telescoping
RotationControllerParameter-> FastSpeed:
Controls the speed for the Rotation
RotationControllerParameter-> SlowSpeed:
Slow rotation movement before ramping up to Fast Speed,
used for precision maneuvering (disabled by setting
slowspeed = fastspeed or slowspeedtime =0 )
RotationControllerParameter ->SlowSpeedTime:
Determines the duration of the slowspeed.
SideShiftControllerParameter-> FastSpeed:
Controls the speed for the SideShift
SideShiftControllerParameter-> SlowSpeed:
Slow SideShift movement before ramping up to Fast
Speed, used for precision maneuvering (disabled by setting
slowspeed = fastspeed or slowspeedtime =0 )
SideShiftControllerParameter->SlowSpeedTime:
Determines the duration of the slowspeed.

! When updating (downloading) a program, also the retain

variable will be overwritten. Therefore it’s a good idea to first
either:
-Upload the old program from the controller, but this can
take hours…
-Login with the new program and select No when the
dialog ‘The program has changed! Download the new
program?’ appears.

Then copy the current settings of the above mentioned

parameters before download of new program.
The MinCurrent for the PWM’s might need to be changed if
there for example is a big time lag between giving command and
an actual movement.
The other parameters shouldn’t need to be changed, they should
be static as set in the latest CoDeSys project.

Safety instructions
This description is part of the unit. It contains texts and drawings
concerning the correct handling of the controller and must be
read before installation or use.
Observe the information of the description. Non-observance of the notes,
operation which is not in accordance with use as prescribed below, wrong
installation or handling can result in serious harm concerning the safety of
persons and plant.
The instructions are for authorised persons according to the EMC and low
voltage guidelines. The controllers must be installed and commissioned by a
skilled electrician (programmer or service technician).
If the unit is not supplied by the mobile on-board system (12/24 V battery
operation) it must be ensured that the external voltage is generated and sup-
plied according to the criteria for safety extra-low voltage (SELV) as this is sup-
plied without further measures to the connected controller, the sensors, and
the actuators.
The wiring of all signals in connection with the SELV circuit of the unit must
also comply with the SELV criteria (safe extra-low voltage, safe electrical sepa-
ration from other electric circuits).
If the supplied SELV voltage has an external connection to ground (SELV
becomes PELV) the responsibility lies with the user and the respective national
regulations for installation must be complied with. All statements in these
operating instructions refer to the unit the SELV voltage of which is not
grounded.
The terminals may only be supplied with the signals indicated in the technical
data or on the unit label and only the approved accessories of ifm electronic
gmbh may be connected.
The unit can be operated within a wide temperature range according to the
technical specification indicated below. Due to the additional self-heating the
housing walls can have high perceptible temperatures when touched in hot
environments.
In case of malfunctions or uncertainties please contact the manufacturer.
Tampering with the unit can lead to considerable risks for the safety of per-
sons and plant. It is not permitted and leads to the exclusion of any liability
and warranty claims.

1. Function and features

The freely programmable controllers of the "ClassicController R 360" series are
rated for use under difficult conditions (e.g. extended temperature range, strong
vibration, intensive EMC interference).
They are thus suited for direct mounting into machines in mobile and rugged
applications. Due to their specification the inputs and outputs are especially rated
for this use. Integrated hardware and software functions (operating system) offer
high protection of the machine.
The controllers can be used as CANopen master.
The controllers "ClassicController R 360" are not approved for safety-rele-
vant tasks in the field of safety of persons.

2. Programming
The application software can be easily created by the user with the ifm program-
ming system "ecolog 100 plus" according to IEC 61131-3.
In addition to the programming system the complete system manual is required
to program the controller.
If this manual is not available, please contact one of the ifm branch offices over-
leaf for your free copy. The system manual (pdf format) can also be downloaded
from the web (www.ifm-electronic.com)..

which he creates himself. If necessary, he must additionally obtain an

approval according to the corresponding national regulations by the correspond-
ing testing and supervisory organisations.

CLASSICCONTROLLER CR0020

3. Mounting
In order to expose the controller to the minimum mechanical stress it should
preferably be mounted horizontally or vertically on the mounting panel. The
module must be fixed with four screws to DIN 7500 or DIN 7984 (M5 x L).
If possible, the controller should be mounted in such a way that the cable entry
of the plug points downwards.
As the self-heating of the electronics of the unit is dissipated via the housing, suf-
ficient cooling must be ensured in case of "sandwich-mounting" of controllers.

4. Electrical connection
To guarantee the electrical interference protection of the controller, the
housing must be connected to GND (e.g. to the ground of the vehicle).
To protect the whole system (wiring and controller) the individual electric circuits
must be protected.
Designation Potential Pin no. Fuse
supply voltage sensors/module VBB S 23 max. 2 A T
supply voltage outputs VBB O 05 max. 15 A
supply voltage via relais VBB R 34 max. 15 A

4.1 Interaction between the inputs and outputs within one group of
connections
In the applications the following must be observed as regards the use of the ter-
minals as input and output:
Within one output group inputs and outputs should not be mixed. One output
group is marked by a common VBBX potential.
The background is a possible internal cross-connection of the outputs from the
externally supplied inputs. This may occur unexpectedly if the supply to the out-
puts is switched off externally.
Should a mixture still be carried out for reasons of optimising the terminals, plea-
se inform yourself in detail about the situations described in the system manual
and the restrictions resulting from this. Follow these instructions for your applica-
tion and keep records of this.

PAGE 14
CLASSICCONTROLLER CR0020

4.2 Laying the supply and signal leads

As a basic principle all supply and signal leads to be laid separately.
Supply and ground leads to the controller and to the sensors / actuators to
be connected via a common neutral point.
Linking connections in the connector is not permitted and can lead to an
incapacitation of men and machines.

5. Maintenance, repair and disposal

As the Controller does not contain any components which must be maintained
by the user, the housing must not be opened. The repair of the controller may
only be carried out by the manufacturer. The disposal must be carried out accord-
ing to the corresponding national environmental regulations.

6. Declaration of conformity

REP 02 Glide plates Sideshift

Sideshift means to move the spreader sideways. The
spreader can be sideshifted ± 800 mm from the middle
position. Control valve attachment pressurises the sideshift
cylinders which push the spreader's main frame in relation
to the lift boom.

Glide plates sideshift frame, checking

1. Remove cover plate, spacer plate and glide plate.

2 .Measure glide plate's thickness. Should be at least 25mm.

REP 04 Telescopic beam units

Telescoping means to change the width between the twistlocks.
Telescoping has two 20- and 40-foot stops. Stops at other
distances are available as an option, e.g., 30-foot stop.
Control valve attachment pressurizes Valve block
telescoping motor which directs the pressure to the
telescoping motor. The telescoping motor pulls the
spreader chains that pull the telescopic beams in and out.
Telescoping is controlled by Control lever. Inductive
position sensors indicate the telescopic units' position.

Damping means that the speed of functions is reduced

automatically near end-positions. Three seconds after
damping has been activated the function is interrupted.
This results in less stress on mechanical parts at stops in
end-positions.
The position sensor senses when damping is to be
activated. When damping is activated the valid control
unit reduces the control current to the solenoid valve for

6.5.3 RSX40 Emergency messages

The emergency message sent from the spreader, our error codes
and sub codes, are put in the 5 manufacturer specific bytes in the
emergency message. Unfortunately, error code and sub code
cannot both fit into the 5 bytes since they are both 32-bit values.
Therefore, the protocol for the emergency messages looks like
this:

Byte 0, 1 : Error code according to the DS444 standard

(NOTE!, this has nothing to do with Bromma error codes from the
list below)

Byte 2 : Error register according to DS301

Byte 3 : Sequence number. Even number means that byte

4,5,6,7 contains an error code. Odd number means that byte
4,5,6,7 contains a sub code. In case of a sub code, it belongs to
the error with the sequence number (X - 1) where X is the
sequence number for the sub code. The sequence number is
increased for every error that occurs, and wraps around after
reaching 255. An emergency message containing an error code
may or may not be followed by an emergency message containing
a sub code.

Byte 4,5,6,7 : If byte 3 is even: the error code, if byte 3 is odd:

the sub code.
