HCP Interaction With Matter

1. Heavy charged particles (HCPs) can transfer energy to atomic electrons through ionization and excitation as they pass through matter. 2. HCPs only transfer a small fraction of their total energy in each collision with an electron. Therefore, HCPs lose energy continuously through a large number of collisions with atomic electrons as they travel through matter. 3. Using classical mechanics, the maximum energy that can be transferred from an HCP to an atomic electron in a single collision is calculated. For a 5 MeV alpha particle, this maximum energy transfer is 5.5 keV.
