MATERIALS FOR TEACHING GRAMMAR

Grammar rules are made easier if they are given

in a context and teaching grammar in context
provides accuracy in the target language.

Grammar is rules of a language. It is a system of

meaningful structures and patterns that are governed
by particular pragmatic constraints.

In foreign language acquisition accurate

understanding of the language structures is the key
part so teaching grammar is an essential aspect of
foreign language instruction. There has always been a
debate about the most effective way of teaching
grammar.

Grammar instruction through context positively

affects learners‘ competence to use grammatical
structures accurately in language skills. It is
always useful for learners to see how language works
in sentences or paragraphs; therefore, teaching
grammar in context will give learners opportunities
to see how grammatical structures function in
sentences. Teaching grammar in context will help
learners to acquire nature of the language which will
facilitate their understanding of the language.

Grammar instruction should not be ignored. To be

an effective language user, learners should study
grammar because grammar skills will help learners
to organize words and messages and make them
meaningful. Knowing more about grammar will enable
learners to build better sentences in speaking and
writing performances. A good knowledge of grammar
helps learners to make sentences clear enough to
understand. Improper use of grammar will not convey
meaningful messages.

To establish an effective communication,

learners need grammar skills; therefore, without
grammar, speech gets meaningless. Grammar is an
essential aspect to communicate effectively.
Moreover, grammar simply is creating well- organized
reading and writing performances.

Grammar will give learners the competence how to

combine words to form sentences. To create fully-
developed sentences, grammar knowledge is
indispensable. With little understanding of how
language functions, learners cannot develop their
language skills.

Just as there are careful and effective drivers

who do not know what makes a car run, so there are
those who, through practice and skillful observation,
have become satisfactory, even effective, writers
with very little understanding of the mechanics of
the language. But it follows that the more you know
about the form and function of the parts that make up
the larger unit, the sentence, the better equipped
you are to recognize and to construct well-formed
sentences.
Grammar instruction holds an important place in
foreign language learning. It needs to be noted that
grammar skills will make great contribution to
language competence.

The study of the structure and history of

language, including English grammar, is a valuable
asset to a liberal education and an important part of
the English program. It should, however, be taught
for its own sake, not as a substitute for
composition, and not with the pretense that it is
taught only to improve writing.

Teaching grammar is to show how language works.

Accurate teaching of grammar guides learners how to
use the language correctly.

One important aspect of grammar teaching is that

it helps learners discover the nature of language,
i.e., that language consists of predictable patterns
that make what we say, read, hear and write
intelligible. Without grammar, we would have only
individual words or sounds, pictures, and body
expressions to communicate meaning. Grammar is the
weaving that creates the fabric. To establish
precise sentences, grammar knowledge is essential.

Grammar Teaching involves any instructional

technique that draws learners‘ attention to some
specific grammatical form in such a way that it helps
them either to understand it metalinguistically and /
or process it in comprehension and / or production so
that they can internalize it.

Language acquisition without grammar will be

confusing. Learners will fail to use the language
correctly without grammar skills. ―People now agree
that grammar is too important to be ignored, and that
without a good knowledge of grammar, learners‘
language development will be severely constrained.

Students may therefore want or need a higher

level of grammatical correctness than is required for
mere comprehensibility. Teaching grammar will help
learners to understand the nature of language.

The teacher’s chief task when teaching grammar is

to show the students what the language means and how
it is used; and must also show them what the
grammatical form of the new language is and how it is
said and written. Teaching grammar through context
will help learners perceive the structures of the
language effectively. If learners are given
grammatical structures in context, they will be able
master the language better. Teaching grammar in
context will help learners to acquire new grammar
structures and forms.
WORKSHEETS AS MATERIALS FOR TEACHING
GRAMMAR
In our everyday lives, grammar is everywhere. We
use it at home, in school, at work, and in the
streets. It is the core of a language regardless of
one’s culture, mastery and understanding of it. Being
able to use grammar also widens one’s vocabulary. It
opens doors of opportunities for us to be able to
communicate freely, with no barriers and hesitations.

In teaching, grammar plays a vital role in how

effectively a teacher conveys his lessons. Knowing
the highs and lows of the language could make or
break a lesson. In one instance, a teacher could
adjust the level of difficulty of words to be used if
he is familiar with grammar. This could lead to a
more enjoyable experience for both teachers and
students. One more thing, being able to express
yourself confidently as a teacher with the right
grammar commands respect and positive outlook from
your students. Mastering proper grammar could inspire
your students to also strive harder in learning the
language.

Grammar is the breaking down of the building

blocks, or parts of speech, in language, and the use
of those pieces to form complete sentences.
English grammar can be tricky to master. Even
native English speakers struggle with the rules that
govern their language. But the collection of English
grammar worksheets and activities should give
students some good practice with this broad topic.

Teaching writing and grammar skills to the

students is a daunting task. Similarly, it is
challenging for the students to learn it. That is why
many approaches and methodologies are used by the
parents and teachers to make it more fun in learning
as well as easier for the students to grab the
knowledge which also includes the grammar worksheets.
But some people may ignore it completely.

Well as many other approaches have been fruitful

in teaching students good writing skills, grammar
worksheets have played an essential part in achieving
the results. Today we will discuss how great grammar
worksheets are in improving student’s English:

 Worksheets are helpful?

 Do worksheets add values in teaching?
 What is the importance of worksheets?

What are worksheets?

A worksheet is a sheet of paper, typically with

questions and spaces for the answers to be written or
may include tasks.

A worksheet is the sheet paper given by tutors to

students to do the particular task. Worksheets are
the effective tool of learning to engage students to
ensure active learning. Teacher creates worksheets to
ensure holistic learning of the subjects. Worksheets
includes concepts and questions.

A worksheet in its primary meaning is simply a

piece of paper that is used to work on. This may be
to complete a task, to log or accompany work, and
they are commonly used in school, finance and tax.

In a classroom setting, a worksheet usually

refers to a loose piece of paper that children use to
answer questions or complete a task. A worksheet in
this primary, paper form is usually always associated
with a school setting as they are frequently used to
assess students’ knowledge and are one of the most
common materials used by teachers in assignments and
assessments.

As an assessment tool, worksheets can be used by

teachers to understand students’ previous knowledge,
outcome of learning, and the process of learning; at
the same time, they can be used to enable students to
monitor the progress of their own learning.

Worksheets are the modern way of making children

learn by creative and related play structures.
Worksheets are more participative and mind provoking
than any other mode of imparting education on
children. It is a highly used technique of making
students learn, especially when the children are in
their pre-school.
What is the use of worksheets?
Worksheets are great to test the learning
outcome. Worksheets can also be used to identify the
weakness of of the students. Worksheets can also be
used effectively to understand the difficult
concepts.

In contrast to whole-class activities and tests,

worksheets can usually be completed by the child at
their own pace. This makes them great for students
who struggle with time restrictions and working under
pressure. Even if they are completed in the lesson,
working through a worksheet as opposed to group-based
tasks allows individuals to ask questions at their
own leisure and gives many of them the confidence to
seek help in areas they may be struggling.

A worksheet can also be very quickly and easily

digested by parents at a glance in most cases, which
can help a parent to understand the learning
processes their child is going through, as well as
give a parent more context towards helping their
child’s education. They also usually only require
children to have a writing instrument to complete,
meaning they are quick, easy and universal for
obtaining progress reports and seeing how.
Worksheets are important for the children because
while studying seems like a chore, worksheets feel
like a fun activity or even a game.

Worksheets help students in exploring multiple

concepts and ideas. They develop fine motor skills,
logical thinking, and learn things on their own.
Worksheets make the kids privy to new and improved
concepts of learning, develop ideas, and portray the
same on their worksheets.

THE ROLE OF WORKSHEETS:

To master a foreign language grammar student must
be engaged in activities which are characteristic of
the language.

The main factors which contribute successful

speech activity and form grammatical skills are
exercises. They form, develop and improve language
skills and abilities. Also good exercises will help
greatly to reinforce students’ initial desire to
learn the language and to sustain their enthusiasm
throughout the course.

Generally speaking, students need to practice

their grammar a lot, but it is only up to the teacher
how they will do it. A good teacher should remember
that students would do the tasks with pleasure not
only as a necessity.
It also develop students’ habits and skills in
using the grammar items to be learned in speaking,
reading and writing.

The teaching of grammar may largely be carried on

through sentence patterns, phrase patterns in word as
a pattern, and the ample use of these patterns in
various oral and written exercises. Therefore grammar
must be subdivided into small fragments, each taught
in response to an immediate need. That is why,
grammar exercises must be suggested in connection
with situations, and remind us of the real usage of
grammar forms and structures.

Worksheets are the effective tool of learning to

engage students to ensure active learning. Teacher
creates worksheets to ensure holistic learning of the
subjects. Worksheets includes concepts and questions.

Worksheets provide extra tips, help students

practice and allow you to check what they know.
That’s why they’re so valuable, both to students and
teachers. Especially for tricky topics, such as
grammar.

REMEMBER:
But worksheets don’t do the teaching. That’s up
to you. They’re just here to help.

It helps in developing a concept:

Many writing gurus recommend that instead of
starting from writing, a student must solve some
grammar worksheets first after completing an
explanation and examples.

It is a straightforward and easy way for a

teacher to determine either they have understood the
concept or not. If they have understood it, the
majority of students will solve the worksheet easily
without any hassle and if not, they will be unable to
do it. This will give the teacher a clear view of
what they have learned, what they need to revise and
if they need to explain it again or not.

It improves student’s cognitive abilities:

Most of the grammar worksheets consist of blank

spaces where the right answer requires to fill in. It
helps them think which is the suitable word or phrase
and fully utilize the correct grammar which they have
already learned. Since the students thinks before
providing an answer, it will improve their cognitive
and decision-making abilities keeping in mind
previous learning.

It allows them to practice themselves:

Usually, when a student starts writing directly
before they practice any worksheet, they make more
mistakes and their mind may get distracted with
sentence structure, using correct tenses and grammar,
punctuation or idea. That is why there are fewer
chances that they use the grammar in the right place.
Therefore, it is better to build the base with more
practice with grammar worksheet and then go for
formal writing and using it in your writing pieces.

A worksheet consists of various exercises related

to similar grammar concepts allowing you to practice
as well as read multiple examples so that they can
understand its use and utilize it in the future.

It initiates trial and error method:

There are more chances for students to make

mistakes and it is good for their learning as well.
Once they make a mistake, they will learn how to
solve it, using the right grammar at right place as
well as going back to their teacher is their concepts
are not clear. It will also initiate their thirst for
using the correct grammar and understand the
importance of grammar at the same time.
It helps them understand the variation of
grammar:

Grammar is versatile and there are many

exceptions in using it. That is why a simple
explanation of a concept will never help. Therefore
teachers are using grammar worksheet not only to
clear their understanding but also in using the
variation in various places.

Grammar worksheets help in remembering the

concept:

Students tend to remember those things and ideas

which they have practice themselves, find the answers
and search for it. That is why worksheets are the
best option for learning and retaining it for a long
time. It not only helps to learn, practice and use
grammar better but also prevents those making
significant mistakes which they make due to short-
term memory

Mistakes Teachers Make with Worksheets

The quality of a worksheet can make or break a
lesson. In order for yours to be effective, you’ll
have to avoid the most common pitfalls.
The first is cramming too much text onto one
sheet. Whether you’re trying to help your students by
giving them as much information as possible or just
trying to save paper, you’re making things more
difficult in the process. The same goes for adding
crazy borders, word art and unnecessary pictures that
crowd the page.

It can be tempting to give out answer keys along

with your worksheets, either during or at the end of
the class. This can save time, but it’s better to go
over worksheet answers as a class to help students
fully understand the material.

Finally, many teachers will forget to follow up

and model with real-world examples of grammar. While
doing worksheets is great, having video and audio
content showing native forms of grammar is one of the
top ways to ensure that the students stay motivated
and engaged.
English Grammar Worksheets and How to
Use Them Effectively

Busy Teacher Gerunds and Infinitives Worksheet:

Busy Teacher’s gerund and infinitive worksheet

gives students an opportunity to practice. First, it
allows them to build their own answer key by filling
a table with lists of given verbs. Then, they can use
the lists to complete some example sentences.

The subject of gerunds and infinitives is a

particularly difficult grammar point, as there’s no
one-size-fits-all rule. Instead, students have to
learn from memory. This is frustrating for those who
love to have a formula to follow and an explanation
for everything. So give them something to work with.

After they’ve finished this activity, play a

memory game. Write the verbs they’ve just used (as
well as some extra ones) on flashcards or slips of
paper. Have students take the slips from a pile in
the middle of the table, one at a time. Each time,
they have to say a sentence using the correct
infinitive. Just make sure they turn over their
worksheet so that they can’t cheat by looking at it.

This worksheet is for pre-intermediate or

intermediate students to improve their skills in
choosing the correct form of the verb, either -ing
form, or infinitive (with and without “to).

Here you will find both types of tasks: just drilling

by opening the brackets and putting the verbs into
the correct form, and a speaking task to make
students feel how the rule works in live language.

ESLPDF.com – Phrasal Verbs Worksheet

Phrasal verbs are another grammar point that
students struggle to memorize.

There are so many of them in the English

language, many of which sound very similar. Simply
adding a preposition to a verb can completely change
its meaning, with seemingly no logic at all.

Thankfully, ESLPDF.com has a multiple-choice

worksheet for phrasal verbs. This shows students how
they can use these terms in real conversations. Along
with its three choices, each question has a hint for
the meaning of the phrasal verb to make it easier.

If you have time, you can ask your students to

use some common phrasal verbs to make questions as an
extension activity. Here are some examples you could
give them:

 “How often do you eat out?”

 “Do you get along with your siblings?”
 “When was the last time you fell over?”

You could also turn it into a writing activity by

asking them to use the phrasal verbs they’ve learned
to write a short story.
iSLCollective – If Clauses Worksheet
iSLCollective is one of the best resources for
ESL teachers, with worksheets for every skill level
and age group. Their worksheet on if clauses is ideal
for advanced students.

With this activity, they have a chance to

practice with drills.

First, it asks students to match halves of

sentences together. In the second activity, they have
to complete the second half of new sentences by
themselves. Finally, they have to reword sentences
with if clauses with words like I’d, so, in case and
provided.

To finish the lesson, give your students free

rein to make their own sentences with “if.” They
could even ask their partners questions, such as:

 “If you saw an alien, what would you do?”

 “If you won the lottery, what is the first
thing you would buy?”
 “If you could be an animal, which one would
you choose?”
Singular vs Plural Nouns
In this singular and plural nouns worksheet, students
have to make the plural form from singular nouns.

Instead of our more challenging irregular nouns

worksheet, these are regular plural nouns where they end with
-s or -es.

For example, the plural of “balloon” is “balloons”. When

there’s more than one, in this case they add -s. Simple as
that.

Common and Proper Nouns Worksheet

In this common and proper nouns worksheet,
students have to brainstorm types of proper nouns.
Answers should vary among students.

For example, if the common noun is “mountain”,

they have to think of a proper noun like Mount
Everest. Notice how the proper noun is capitalized
but the common noun isn’t.
This is because common nouns are just general
names. But proper names are specific and require the
first letter to be capitalized.

Collective Nouns Worksheet:

In this collective nouns worksheet, students have
to fill in the blanks with words at bottom of the
page. Enter in the best possible answer for each
collective noun.

When you put individual things into groups, the

way you describe that collection is a “collective
noun”. For example, words like “flock”, “herd” and
“swarm” are collective nouns because they are names
for a collection of things.

In this collective nouns worksheet, we want you

to use only each answer only once. But in colloquial
English, we can’t always think of the collective
noun.

If you can’t think of a “flock of birds”, you can

just say “group of birds”. Because there are hundreds
of collective nouns examples, you can try to memorize
them all. But don’t worry if you can’t.

Irregular Plural Nouns Worksheet

For regular plural nouns, you can simply take the
noun and add “-s” or “-es” to make it plural. But for
irregular plural nouns, you will have to change the
vowel, word, or add a different ending than “-s” or
“-es”.

For example, “men” is an irregular plural noun

for “man”. Because we change the vowel from “a” to
“e”, this makes it irregular.

In this irregular plural nouns worksheet,

students have to convert each singular noun to plural
irregular nouns. Ranging from easy to difficult, feel
free to use it in your classroom for free.

Possessive Nouns
Possessive nouns show ownership. For example,
“the boy’s ball” shows that the ball belongs to the
boy.

Here are 3 simple rules to follow for creating

possessive nouns.

If you want to show the possessive form of a

singular noun, add –‘s. (boy → boy’s)

For plural nouns that don’t end in -s, add –‘s.

(children → children’s)

Finally, for plural nouns that already end with

an -s, add ‘. (dogs → dogs’)
In this possessive nouns worksheet, try to follow
the 3 rules advice for guidance. Can you create the
possessive form?

Helping Verbs
In this helping verbs worksheet, students have to
read each sentence carefully. Next, they have to
circle the action verb and underline the helping
verb.

Generally, we use helping verbs to compliment action

verbs. For the majority of the time, the helping been
goes before the action verb.

For example, in the sentence “he should listen in

class” – “should” is the helping verb, and “listen”
is the action verb.

for sentences: Subject + Adverb + Verb.

Adjectives to Adverbs
This adverb quiz tests student’s ability to
convert adjectives to adverbs. For example, you can
take the adjective “calm” and make it an adverb by
adding “-ly”.

In an adverb sentence, you have to add a verb for

which the adverb describes. For example, “the coach
spoke calmly to the players”.

When you describe the most of something, you are
using superlative adjectives. For example, the
cheetah is the fastest mammal in the animal kingdom.
The word “fastest” is the largest degree of speed so
this makes it a superlative adjective.

In this superlative adjectives worksheet, we

practice this type of adjective. In addition, we
explore the world and what is the coldest, driest,
and closest for geography.

First, print off the superlative adjectives

worksheet. Next, have students fill in the blanks and

Prepositions of Time
We use Prepositions of Time (in, at and on) for
the various aspects of time. But when do you use
“in”, “at” and “on”?

In general, we use “in” before for month, year,

seasons, and historical periods. In English, “at” is
for specific times, places, and meals. And we use
“on” for days of the week and specific dates.

In this Prepositions of Time Worksheet, we help

clarify how to use each type of preposition by
providing example sentences.

In this preposition practice worksheet, students

practice prepositions by writing down the location of
the ball in each scene.

Present Perfect Questions

The Have You Ever Game is a great way to kick-start

your class because it can really get your students
moving. And getting your students moving around is
never a bad thing.

First, start by reviewing the present perfect verb

form. That is, the action is complete in the past for
present perfect. In other words, you are looking at
the result right now without any words referring to
time.

For example, “Have you ever been to Disneyland?” is

in present perfect verb form. The basic structure for
present perfect questions is as follows: Have you
ever, never, already, yet + Present perfect?

Second, start by telling students there is a ‘yes’

side and ‘no’ side. A nice touch is to add yes and no
posters to the wall to help remind them which side is
which. As you make ‘Have you ever’ questions, your
students can run to either side of the room.

There’s something satisfying about investigating your

students while building their listening skills at the
same time. Overall, my students can’t resist mixer-
style games like this.

Why is grammar important?

Grammar is important because it is the language

that makes it possible for us to talk about language.
Grammar names the types of words and word groups that
make up sentences not only in English but in any
language. As human beings, we can put sentences
together even as children — we can all do grammar.
But to be able to talk about how sentences are built,
about the types of words and word groups that make up
sentences — that is knowing about grammar. And
knowing about grammar offers a window into the human
mind and into our amazingly complex mental capacity.

People associate grammar with errors and

correctness. But knowing about grammar also helps us
understand what makes sentences and paragraphs clear
and interesting and precise. Grammar can be part of
literature discussions, when we and our students
closely read the sentences in poetry and stories. And
knowing about grammar means finding out that all
languages and all dialects follow grammatical
patterns.

Teaching grammar will not make writing errors go

away. Students make errors in the process of
learning, and as they learn about writing, they often
make new errors, not necessarily fewer ones. But
knowing basic grammatical terminology does provide
students with a tool for thinking about and
discussing sentences. And lots of discussion of
language, along with lots of reading and lots of
writing, are the three ingredients for helping
students write in accordance with the conventions of
standard English.

Grammar is an important aspect of a language

where learners’ and teachers’ opinions vary. Some
students love to find out or learn the proper usage
of grammar while some wanted to do grammar exercises.
While some love grammar, others hate it and think
that it is the most boring part of learning a new
language. Whatever your stand is, you cannot escape
from learning grammar; it is vital in every sentence
you read or write, speak or hear. Grammar is simply
the word for the rules that people follow when they
use a language. We need those rules in the same way
as we need the rules in any game.
REMEMBER:
A worksheet can be a wonderful teaching tool, but
it shouldn’t be your entire lesson.

Don’t be one of those teachers who hands them out

to the class, only to sit down at your desk and let
your students work on them in silence. This feels
like a test, and your ESL lessons need to be much
more stimulating than that if you want your students
to improve.

While your students are completing their

worksheets, be present. Walk around the class and
give them an opportunity to ask you for help.

Also, combine worksheets with speaking exercises

and games to make things more active and well-
rounded. That way, you can turn even the most mundane
grammar point into a fun lesson!
