University of Central Punjab: Assignment No. 1

The document is a quality function deployment (QFD) report for a juice box product created by a group of students. It outlines the customer requirements they identified, including juice capacity, natural taste, packaging, straw, and sugar level. A survey found natural taste and juice capacity to be the top priorities. Their hows (technical requirements) to meet these include bigger boxes, natural fruit essence, tetra pak packaging, a paper/plastic straw combo, good quality sugar, and a brick box shape. They analyze competitors and set benchmarks for their hows.

Assignment:
Take any product of your choice and make a Quality Function Deployment (QFD) report.

The Product we chose was “Juice Box”

QFD is a focused methodology for carefully listening to the voice of customer and then
responding to those needs and expectations. It is a set of tools that is used to define
customer requirements and convert them into detailed engineering specifications to produce
products that fulfil those requirements. It translates customer requirements into measurable
design targets. As effective communication plays an important role in an organization’s
success and QFD communicates customer needs to multiple business operations including
design, quality, manufacturing, production marketing and sales. This communication allows
entire organization to work together and produce products with high customer perceived
value.

Customer Requirements:
In order to make our QFD, we first gathered a few customer requirements in relevance with
our product i.e., Juice Box. After discussion and analysis, we finalized five requirements
which are as follows:

1. Juice Capacity
2. Natural Taste
3. Packaging
4. Straw
5. Sugar Level

Survey among Customers:

After filtering out the requirements, we conducted a survey among 25 potential customers
and asked them how would they prioritize these requirements from 1 st to 5th. Upon seeing
results, we discovered how these requirements have importance among customers. With 1 st
being the top priority and 5 th being the least, following are the results.

1. Natural Taste
2. Juice Capacity
3. Straw
4. Packaging
5. Sugar level
Most people preferred natural taste, that the juice should taste natural obviously, Juice
capacity was second, most people emphasized on higher quantity of juice. Third being
straw, in this woke era many companies have introduced paper straws but they are not
affective enough to open the seal of juice box, so we came up with using combination of
paper and plastic as customers are being frustrated by paper straws. Fourth, we have
packaging where how the juice is packed and presented part is covered and at fifth, we have
the sugar level, according to results people are not mainly concerned about sugar levels in
the juices, natural taste could be a factor affecting this kind of result here.

How are we going to fulfil these customer requirements?

Moving towards the HOWS, that how we will be achieving these customer requirements.
After brainstorming among the group, we came with six HOWS which are as follows:

1. Bigger Boxes
2. Natural Fruit Essence
3. Tetra Pak
4. Combination of Paper and Plastic
5. Good Quality Sugar
6. Brick Shaped Boxes

Discussing the following, at first, we came up with manufacturing bigger boxes which can
be filled up with more juice. At second, we came with the idea of using more Natural Fruit
essence in our juices in order to generate that natural taste our customers need. Thirdly,
Tetra Pak packaging should help us package our juices better and give the box some
strength so that it does not squeeze with slight force. For straws, we came up using the
combination of paper and plastic, we could make the tip of the straw of plastic and rest of it
of paper so it would be easy for customers to open the seal of box at least. Next, we will be
using good quality sugar for better taste and the sugar level requirement of our customers.
Furthermore, we will be using brick shaped boxes instead of narrow shaped boxes. Brick
shaped boxes are broad in shape and therefore they can store large volume of juice.

Relationship between our HOWS:

Our few HOWS are somehow is interrelated, bigger boxes is related to Tetra Pak because if
we make our boxes bigger, we will have to increase the number of layers in order to give it
more strength which is also related to combination of paper and plastic as juice boxes are
mainly made of three materials which are paper, plastic and aluminum. Bigger boxes are
also related to brick shaped boxes because brick shaped are broad in shape and have more
volume. Natural fruit essence is related to good quality of sugar because good quality sugar
will bring out the best of them. Tetra Pak is related to combination of paper and plastic as
both are used in the packaging process. Tetra Pak is also related to brick shaped boxes
because a broad shaped boxes would require more layers to be strengthened.

Competitors’ Analysis:
In the competitors’ analysis, we chose two competitors. Nestle Fruita vitals and Slice. Fruita
vitals is good in Natural Taste, packaging and sugar level. Fair in Juice capacity and Poor in
straws as their new paper straws are not affective enough. Slice is Fair in Straws, Juice
capacity and Sugar level while Good in Natural Taste and Packaging.

Benchmarks:
The benchmark values for our HOWS are 250ml for bigger boxes, 5% to 30% for Natural
Fruit Essence, 6 layered packaging for Tetra Pak, Straws being good enough to be used, 80
to 100 calories for good quality sugar. Broad shaped boxes for Brick shaped boxes.

Evaluation:
Our evaluation along with competitors is follows:

1. Bigger Boxes (200ml for Fruita vitals, 200ml for Slice, we have a capacity of 250ml)
2. Natural Fruit Essence (31% by Fruita vitals, 8% by Slice and 35% of pure fruit
essence by us.
3. Tetra Pak (Fruita vitals, Slice and we all are using Tetra Pak)
4. Good enough straws (Us and Slice are providing good straws while fruita vitals is
not)
5. Good quality Sugar (88 calories in fruita vitals, 108 calories in slice and 100 calories
are being provided by us)
6. Brick Shaped Boxes (Slice and Fruita vitals are offering narrow shaped boxes while
we are offering brick shaped boxes)
