PRELIM : Guidance & Counselling

1. Explain the intertwined process of guidance and counselling.

- Guidance and counselling are critical in education, specifically in the process of

directing and controlling activities in order to help students reach their full potential.
In a nutshell, guidance assists learners by providing them with directions and
assistance, whereas counselling is a more professional service that assists learners in
confronting and overcoming specific problems.

2. How could guidance and counselling build or break a student’s future?

- According to what I've learned in this course, a lack of guidance and counseling leads
to indiscipline in schools. When learners are actively involved in decision-making,
they are more likely to act negatively by engaging in unethical activities and
behaviors. When an educational institution lacks adequate facilities and resources for
guidance and counseling, the performance, behaviors, and potential of their students
can suffer, and the consequences can last a lifetime.

3. Among the guidance personnel, who holds the greatest responsibility in terms of
student’s welfare?

- A guidance counselor is extremely important to a student's well-being. Why? because

they help students with personal, family, academic, mental health, and career
decisions and problems. They are the ones who interact with students the most
because they talk to them, offer options, listen to them, and assist students in
developing coping mechanisms. To be more specific, they offer assistance in all
aspects of each student's life.

4. How should we create a friendly atmosphere for our learners so that they could freely
disclose their stories to us?

- It is difficult to create a welcoming environment in the classroom. To accomplish

this, a teacher must set a good example for his or her students and promote positive
behavior through positive reinforcement. You can gain your students' trust in this
way. We must have social skills such as empathy, tolerance, patience, and effective
communication in order for them to feel comfortable disclosing information. It is also
critical to understand who our students are. However, we must prioritize creating a
classroom in which everyone supports one another by complementing one another
and making them feel as if they are not alone.
5. You noticed that one of your students might have a huge problem at home but upon
asking him, he refused to answer. What steps should you take to help your students?
- I will not make my students tell me about their problems. What I'll do is demonstrate
to them that they can rely on me by making them feel as if I understand them and can
feel what they're feeling. When there is no longer a chance to learn the story, it is far
better to involve the parents or guardians, because their children are, after all, their
responsibility, not ours. I will inform the parents about the observed behaviors, and
we will work together to help the students face their problems and find solutions.

6. As a teacher, should you help a parent of your student with her problem which is not
related to any school or learning activities? Why or why not?
- A teacher is a member of the community, and our duties extend beyond the four walls
of the classroom. We are always willing to help and assist students, parents,
stakeholders, and other members of the community. So, as long as it does not violate
the fundamental rules and ethics of a teacher, I would assist a student with a problem
that is unrelated to any school or learning activities. Students may face problems
outside of school, such as violence, bullying, addictions, family problems, abuses,
and other issues. These issues have a significant impact on their academic
performance and school behavior. That is why, as teachers, we should assist them in a
way that is beneficial to them.
