Activity 1: Passing Drills
Get partner and practice each kind of pass. Challenge yourself to go farther apart.
Get a partner. Your partner will be the passer and you will be the receiver. Your partner will pass
you the ball, and your goal is to efficiently catch them. After you practice your overhead and
underhand catches, switch roles with your partner.
Such activities as doing passing, dribbling, and shooting drills are sure is very tiring
with this frail body of mine. I felt fatigue after doing all of that. These physical activities
are really meant to haul our body and in term of my physical aptitudes I am average, so
there’s no question why I felt worn-out after doing that such draining activities.
If I am going to reflect my performance in handling the ball, I think that I did a fine
job handling the ball properly, considering that I do not play basketball that quite often-
though I like the idea of playing basketball. As what I said earlier, I am an average player
when it comes to physical sports. My strength is actually in mental sports like chess. I
do passing, dribbling, and shooting in my cuisine’s half-court whenever I had the
opportunity to go outside, thus I am not a complete novice in this sport. So overall, I
believe that I did my best in handling the ball properly.
Write a reflection on the things you learned in this lesson and their relevance to
you. Tell how you can apply what you have learned in your daily life and cite specific
instances in which you feel this learning’s will come handy.
FITNESS LOG
I find Lesson 3: The Basics of Basketball very informative; it focuses on one of the
most popular sports and teaches us how to execute the basic playing skills with
controlled and refined movement.
Under this lesson are the basic skills in playing basketball. The first one tackled is
the shooting skill which is very important since in this sport you can only make score
through shooting. Being relaxed and having a steady concentration is vital in shooting.
There are also types of shots that I remember reading; some of these are free throw and
lay-up.
The next one I learned is the dribbling skills where the module emphasized as
essential to master, for it will allow me to move around the court while I have the ball.
Some basic types of dribbling are low dribble and cross-over. In dribbling, fingers should
be spread out for better handling of the ball, and always consider the height of the
dribble, which should always be below the waist.
Then, there are passing skills that help players maximize their involvement since
basketball is a team sport. This is vital for the players and the game to function as one.
In the module, there are supposedly two types of pass: air pass and bounce pass, where
one is done without hitting the floor (air pass), and the other is what it suggests. But
having said all of that, there are now many types of passes, and some of these are
overhead pass, baseball pass, and chest pass.
After passing is the rebounding skill. It requires great strength and power to
execute; this is the ability to jump and gain possession of the ball.
Lastly, is the running skills. We all have this skill (except PWD’s) but it is different
when it comes to Basketball. The module stated that ‘speed defines the best,' which is
indeed true especially in this sport, either in terms of offensive or defensive play.
The above statements are learnings from this module that I have acquired from
reading, application, and observations. These skill-sets hold relevance personally, for I
believe that these will be useful in a certain period of my existence. We do not know
what tomorrow holds. Maybe one day, I suddenly want to become a star player. This will
surely be handy when that time comes.
In my life, I think these skills would be put to use mostly in camps, fellowship,
league, and school activities. I do advising works, so I think I can move and use this
knowledge in coaching – it is somehow related. However, I believe that beyond all of
that skills, the most important things that I have learned in this lesson and in playing
Basketball are: the inevitability of failure, the value of teamwork, hard work, and
determination, be prepared both mentally and physically, life lesson of patience, and to
never give up.
I was reminded by this module that concentration and being calm at all times are
important. In my everyday life, skills are indeed useful, but a lifelong lesson is gold.
