Return To TOC: Dowty Propellers Standard Practices Manual

This document provides the procedure for ultrasonically inspecting the rear half of the Hercules II propeller hub for fatigue cracking around the 15 threaded stud holes. The inspection uses a contact pulse echo method with a 5MHz probe to scan around each stud hole. Any indication over 30% of the screen height or a missing back wall echo will fail the part. Failed hubs must be sent back to the manufacturer for further investigation.

DOWTY PROPELLERS STANDARD PRACTICES MANUAL

NDTUT 50
THE ULTRASONIC INSPECTION OF THE HERCULES II
PROPELLER HUB REAR HALF

1. Scope

A. This technique details the contact pulse echo method of ultrasonic inspection for the detection of
fatigue cracking from and around the 15 threaded stud holes.

B. It will be necessary to remove the propeller from the engine drive flange.

C. The ultrasonic equipment is to be calibrated in accordance with NDT 5DAP.

D. Personnel carrying out this technique must be qualified to NDT 10DAP.

2. Equipment Required

A. Ultrasonic flaw detector operating in the 4 to 6 Mhz range.

B. A sonic 6 mm (0.25 in) diameter 5Mhz longitudinal probe type No. CBA5-IT or harisonic CM0504R.

C. A light alloy ultrasonic reference block with a 3/64 in diameter flat botom hole and 2.0 in metal path
Part No. DAPT 09-0001-00. Detail 10. (See figure 2).

D. A probe guide Part No. DAPT 15-0062-00. (See figure 3).

E. Suitable couplant.

3. Calibration Procedure

A. Using a suitable couplant, place the probe on the reference block.

B. Using standard calibration procedure establish the probe zero position.

C. By probe movement identify the signal from the flat bottom hole and set at 8.0 on the timebase.
(See figure 4).

D. Maximise this signal and set amplitude to 80% full screen height. (See figure 4).

4. Inspection Procedure

A. Place the probe guide in position over a stud as shown in figure 1.

B. Apply couplant to hub mounting face around probe guide and position probe as shown in figure 1.

C. A back wall echo will appear at approximately 7.0 on the timebase. (See figure 5).

D. Scan 360° around probe guide. Discontinuity indications may appear at any position along the
timebase, between the entry surface and the back wall echo signals.

E. Repeat para’s 4A to 4D around all 15 threaded studs.

NOTE: During scanning, large indications may appear at approximately 5.8 on the
timebase. This is due to a small locking dowel hole drilled in the inside face of the
hub half. (See figure 1 and 6). Signals from the thread flanks may also appear,
from 2.0 on the timebase to the back wall echo, up to 20% full screen height. (See
figure 5).

5. Inspection Standard

A. Any indication which, after careful cross-checking of setting up procedure, is 30% of full screen
height or more is to be considered a defect and rejected.

B. If there is a complete loss of back wall echo signal, the hub must be rejected.

C. Rejected hubs are to be returned to Dowty Aerospace Propellers for further investigation.
