Assessment Task 1 (MMW)

Here are 3 things that use the golden ratio: 1. Spiral shells - The chambers of many spiral shells follow the golden ratio, with each chamber being larger than the previous one by a factor of 1.618. Nautilus shells are a classic example. 2. Architecture - Many famous buildings employ the golden ratio, including the Parthenon in Athens. The proportions of walls and columns are based on the golden ratio. 3. Human body - Parts of the human body approximate the golden ratio, including the ratio of the length of the whole body to the length from the top of the head to the bottom of the chin. The ratio of the length of the forearm to the hand is also close to 1

MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD (GE5114)

Assessment Tasks
Name: Jimenez, Wendhel Lyn C.
Course and Section: OMT 1-A
Class Schedule: 9:30-11:00 am
Score:___________________

I. Instruction: Answer the following tasks consistently and coherently.

Essay. On your own words with a minimum of 100 words.

1.Identify patterns in nature and regularities in the world.

When we say pattern it is a discernible regularity in the world or in a man- made design, while a
regularity is the fact that the same thing always happens in the same circumstances. Patterns in nature
are visible regularities of form found in the natural world and can also be seen in the universe. Nature
patterns which are not just to be admired, they are vital clues to the rules that govern natural
processes. Here is some examples of these patterns that we may be able to spot the moment we
decided to go for a walk. Patterns can be observed in stars which move in circles across the sky each
day. Animals like zebras, tigers, cats and snakes are covered in patterns of stripes. Leopards and hyenas
are covered in pattern of spots and giraffes are covered in pattern of blotches. Natural patterns like the
intricate waves across the oceans, sand dunes on deserts, formation of typhoon, cracks, or lightning
and etc. The Man-made patterns that are often used in design and can be abstract, such as those used
in mathematics, science, and language. In architecture and art, patterns can be used to create visual
effects on the observer.

2. Articulate the importance of mathematics in one’s life.

Mathematics has become an inseparable piece of our lives. Whether we work in an office or
invest the majority of our energy at home, every last one of us utilizes math as a piece of our regular
day to day existence. Depending of where we are or what we are doing, math is always present if you’ll
look for it. Mathematics is the systematic application of a problem. Furthermore, it is one of the main
subjects of our lives. Regardless of which field or calling you to have a place with, its application is all
over. That’s why, it is essential to have a decent comprehension of the subject. Even though the
fundamentals of mathematics begin in school, their application continues until we become grown-ups,
and in this way, mathematics has become an important part of our lives. Imagining our lives without it
is akin to imagining a boat without a sail. Imagining our life without mathematics is similar to
envisioning a boat without a sail. You may be shocked to realize that we use mathematics consistently,
even without knowing it. From dialing numbers on the telephone to giving cash for making the
installments, our reality is encircled by mathematics.

3. Argue about the nature of mathematics, what is it, how it is expressed, represented and used.
I lean towards the view that mathematics is discovered rather than invented or created. Its
domain is not molecules or cells, but numbers, chance, form, algorithms, and change. As a science of
abstract objects, mathematics relies on logic rather than on observation as its standard of truth, yet
employs observation, simulation, and even experimentation as a means of discovering truth.
Mathematics has its unique nature compared to the others. It is the science of patterns and
relationships. As a theoretical discipline, mathematics explores the possible relationships among
abstractions without concern for whether those abstractions have counterparts in the real world. A
great example of mathematical concepts in nature is symmetry which is found in abundance in the
natural world.
4. Express appreciation for mathematics as a human endeavor.
The body of knowledge and practice known as mathematics is derived from the contributions of
thinkers throughout the ages and across the globe. It gives us a way to understand patterns, to
quantify relationships, and to predict the future. It is more than just a part of our daily lives,
comparable to the common belief allows us to better understand the world around us. The use of
numbers and figures can be found everywhere, from cooking to medicine, to the media with their
percentages and graphs, the financial area budgeting our daily expenses and plays a crucial role in
understanding the contents of other school subjects such as science, social studies, and even music
and art. It Is the same all over the world, and can act as a universal language. It also helps us
understand the world and provides an effective way of building mental discipline. Mathematics
encourages logical reasoning, critical thinking, creative thinking, abstract or spatial thinking, problem-
solving ability, and even effective communication skills. It studies and applies this formula, as well as
analyzes questions according to the data by using logical reasoning.

II. Answer the following using the Fibonacci Sequence. Show your solution.
Given: 0, 5, 5, 10, 15, 25, 40, 65, 105….
Find: 20th term, 25th term, 33rd term, 35th term, 40th term

1. 20th Term = 20,905

2. 25th Term = 231,840
3. 33rd Term = 10,891,545
4. 35th Term = 28,514,435
5. 40th Term = 316,229,930

III. Draw at least 3 things that uses Golden Ratio.
