ENCOUNTER/Amar SinghNone of the Capital''s glitterati was prepared for the extremely ugly exchanges that took place
at a social evening last month between Congress MP Mani Shankar and Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh. Starting
off as a wordy duel, it degenerated into a physical one, much to the embarrassment of all present. However, it was a
thoroughly unrepentant Amar Singh who gave STOI a blow-by-blow account of what happened. Excerpts from an
interview:
What was the provocation for the brawl at Satish Gujral''s party?
In spite of being greatly provoked, I kept my cool for a very long time. The party was in honour of H.K. Dua, press advisor
to the Prime Minister and a good friend of mine, who''d recently got married. Practically everybody who matters was
there. Mani came up to me absolutely drunk and charged: `You are a racist. You prevented Sonia Gandhi from becoming
the Prime Minister only because she''s a foreigner.'' I kept quiet.
Did you think it wasn''t worth countering? Or was it because you did stall her premiership?
I did not prevent her from becoming the PM. It was the collective decision of Samajwadi Party MPs and MLAs under
Mulayam Singh''s leadership. As a spokesperson it was my duty to articulate the party''s view.
Surely that wasn''t provocation enough?
Mani didn''t stop at that. He called me an opportunist, a political weather cock. I countered: I was with Mulayam and I''m
still with him. It''s you who, when denied a Congress seat, went over to Mamata and when she spurned you, you came
back, calling her names. Mani shot back: `You are a broker of industrialists, you are Ambani''s dog.'' Without losing my
shirt, I replied: Fine, as far as the Ambanis are concerned you people are virgins. Your party has not taken a single penny
from them. As for proximity with industrialists the Congress has been in close touch with many of them. I told him: Yeh tu
nahi, sharaab bol raha hai. To which Mani replied: `Mera dil aur dimaag bol raha hai''. Continuing in the same vein I said:
Mote Mani Shankar, sharaab ke nashe mein dhhut tera sara shareer dol raha hai.

He was not offended?

He just wanted to provoke me, and when I didn''t get provoked, he said, `What sort of a Thakur are you?'' He just wanted
to pick up a fight.
Why would he do that?
So that he could go back and tell Soniaji, I fixed Amar Singh, I''m the only one who could do it, and thus ensure a berth in
the Congress Working Committee. I told Mani, I know your gameplan. I''m not going to help you get into Soniaji''s
charmed circle. To which he said, `You are under-estimating my clout with her, I write all her speeches. I did it for Rajiv.''
Sure, how can anybody forget those infamous lines, `Mein VP Singh ki naani yaad karadoonga. God help the leader and
the party which has a speech writer like you, I replied. He gave a maa ki gali. I said politely, but firmly, I can also abuse
your mother, but I won''t stoop so low. For god''s sake don''t provoke the beast in me.
But he did?
He was irrepressible... He said, `We belong to the Oxford and Cambridge set... your leader can''t even articulate himself
in English... Oh that bloody Mulayam -- he looks just like me. It could be because my father visited UP at some point.
Why don''t you check with Mulayam''s mother''. This was crossing all limits. I grabbed him by the neck and did what I had
to do.
You beat him up?
I did much less than what he deserved.
You said that knowing his gameplan you refused to get provoked. Why did you get provoked?
Mulayam Singh is very close to my heart. He is my leader. I''m sorry about what I did. I don''t think it was right.
So you regret what you did?
I don''t. I''m human, I''m not an angel. I got provoked when he talked about my leader''s mother in such a derogatory
manner. As a member of civil society I''m ashamed.
You embarrassed your hosts!?
If the hosts invite such characters, give them too much to drink and don''t intervene when things get out of control, I''m
sorry, I can''t help it.
Is such behaviour befitting of MPs?

Normally, in such an episode, people''s sympathies are with the victim. But in this case, the person who was kicked,
enjoyed no sympathy.
That may be your perception.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED 17 YEARS AGO?

The incident took place in November 2000 at a dinner party hosted by Satish Gujraral (brother of former
Prime Minister IK Gujral). Amar Singh and Mani Shankar Aiyar had landed punches on one another while
the national capital's glitterati stood witness.

The dinner party had been hosted in the honour of HK Dua, former media advisor to prime ministers Atal
Bihari Vajpayee and HD Deve Gowda.

In an interview Amar Singh had later said that Mani Shankar Aiyar came up to him fully drunk and accused
him of being a racist. Mani Shankar Aiyar allegedly accused Amar Singh of preventing Sonia Gandhi from
becoming the prime minister owing to her foreign origin.

Mani Shankar Aiyar did not stop at that. He went on to call Amar Singh a "political weather cock". Amar
Singh retorted by accusing Mani Shankar Aiyar of shifting sides - from Sonia to Mamata Banerjee and back.

ABUSES FLEW THICK AND FAST

In the heated exchange with all those matter being witness, Mani Shankar Aiyar allegedly called Amar Singh
"a broker of industrialists" and "Ambani's dog".

Amar Singh reportedly told Mani Shankar Aiyar that "it is not you but your wine is talking". But, Mani
Shankar Aiyar would not relent. He challenged Amar Singh with words like "What sort of a Thakur are
you?''

When Amar Singh, as he has claimed, remained unprovoked Mani Shankar Aiyar hurled expletives at the
then SP leader, who was with the then SP president Mulayam Singh Yadav in the party.

THE SHOWDOWN

Mani Shankar Aiyar then trained his guns at Mulayam Singh and told Amar Singh: We are from the Oxford
and Cambridge while your leader can't even speak English...Mulayam looks just like me. It could be because
my father visited UP some time. Why don't you ask Mulayam's mother?"

Amar Singh was the most trusted lieutenant of Mulayam Singh then and was the most potent voice after the
former SP president in the party. Amar Singh still confesses that he holds Mulayam Singh in high esteem.
Mani Shankar Aiyar had just hurt the collective ego of Amar Singh and Mulayam Singh.

This proved to be the final trigger point after which Amar Singh pushed Mani Shankar Aiyar and pinned him
onto the floor and beat him up.

An elite galaxy of powers that be was witness to the desi fight between two top leaders of the country. Mani
Shankar Aiyar ended up having few bruises on his face and body. Amar Singh today reminded Mani Shankar
Aiyar of the incident again.

With the Congress on the backfoot after Mani Shankar Aiyar's "Neech" remark against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rajya
Sabha MP Amar Singh on Friday recalled an incident when he had a tiff with the veteran Congress leader.

On Thursday, Aiyar had called PM Modi a "neech aadmi" who does "dirty politics" after the PM targeted the Congress. The
Congress has suspended Aiyar from the primary membership of the party and issued him a show-cause notice for his remark.

Singh, a close aide of Mulayam Singh Yadav, told news agency ANI that Aiyar has
insulted many politicians in the past including, former Tamil Nadu chief minister
Jayalalitha and Union Minister Uma Bharti.

The Mulayam aide said that some years back, under the influence of alcohol, Aiyar got
into an argument with him which Amar Singh described as "etihaisik jhadap"
(Historic tiff).

at an election rally in Surat.

This is not the first time that Aiyar has embarrassed the Congress. In the run-up to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he had made a
'chai wala' jibe at Modi. Analysts believe that these statements had helped the BJP a great deal. In fact, some persons on the
social media even went on to call Aiyar a mole of the BJP.

Manishankar Aiyer is a senior Congress leader who also served as minister in

UPA government. More than his work, he is known for his arrogant, abusive
and controversial statements, which are extremely obnoxious and has
become his trademark. In 2013, when PM Modi was appointed as the BJP’s
Prime Ministerial candidate, Manishankar Aiyar ridiculed his poor
background, his poor parents and mocked him by saying he would open a
tea stall outside his of ce where Modi can sell tea. It clearly showed Aiyar’s
arrogance, foul-mouth and insensitivity to the poor. The rest is history !
Rattled by PM Modi’s victory and growing popularity, he also went to
Pakistan and asked Pakistanis to help him in removing Modi. It is still beyond
comprehension how people of Pakistan can help in “removing” the Prime
Minister of India !

Any way, being an abusive is nothing new for someone like Manishankar Aiyar.
In a revelation by Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, Aiyar had abused him
‘motherf***er‘, called him a pimp and tried to provoke him. This event dates
back to November 2000, and was published in Sunday Times issue of 3
December 2000 in an interview with Amar Singh.

In a high-pro le party hosted by Satish Gujral in the honour of H.K.Dua’s

marriage (H.K.Dua was the press advisor to the Prime Minister), most of the
high pro le journalists, politicians, businessmen and eminent people were
present. After drinking heavily, Manishankar Aiyar came to Amar Singh and
started to abuse him.

Manishankar Aiyar came up to Amar Singh absolutely drunk and charged,

“You are a racist. You prevented Sonia Gandhi from becoming the Prime
Minister only because she”s a foreigner.’‘ (In 1999 Lok Sabha elections, none
of the parties could get a majority and Sonia Gandhi wanted to become the
Prime Minister with the support of Samajwadi Party. Unfortunately, SP did
not offer its support to Sonia Gandhi for becoming the Prime Minister and her
dreams were shattered).

Amar Singh didn’t respond. After being provoked again, Amar Singh said, “I
did not prevent her from becoming the PM. It was the collective decision of
Samajwadi Party MPs and MLAs under Mulayam Singh’s leadership. As a
spokesperson it was my duty to articulate the party’s view.”

Manishankar Aiyar did not stop at this. He further abused Amar Singh, calling
him a pimp and a weathercock. “You are a broker of industrialists, you are
Ambani’s dog,“ Manishankar Aiyar said to Amar Singh. He just wanted to
provoke Amar Singh, and when the Singh didn’t get provoked, he said, “What
sort of a Thakur are you?”

Amar Singh told Aiyar, “I know your gameplan. I am not going to help you get
into Soniaji’s charmed circle.” A visibly frustrated Manishankar Aiyar hit back,
“You are under-estimating my clout with her, I write all her speeches. I did it
for Rajiv.” God help the leader and the party which has a speech writer like
you, I replied. When Amar Singh calmly taunted him, Aiyar stooped low and
called Amar Singh a “Motherf***er”. “He gave a maa ki gali.” Amar Singh said
politely, but rmly, “I can also abuse your mother, but I won’t stoop so low. For
God’s sake don’t provoke the beast in me.”

However, the worst part of Manishankar Aiyar was yet to come. By now
clearly rattled and totally drunk, He said in the most arrogant way, “We
belong to the Oxford and Cambridge set…. your leader (Mulayam) can’t even
articulate himself in English… Oh that bloody Mulayam – he looks just like
me. It could be because my father visited Uttar Pradesh at some point. Why
don’t you check with Mulayam’s mother”. 

After this statement, Amar Singh lost all his cool and he grabbed Manishankar
Aiyar by his neck. Upon asked what he did with Aiyar, Amar Singh said that he
did much less than what he deserved.

This is the real character of Manishankar Aiyar, a man who is educated from
Oxford/Cambridge, quali ed Indian Foreign Service and was a diplomat. His
anti-India rants and support from Pakistan stems from the fact that he was
born in Pakistan, and also served as the diplomat of Pakistan for 3 years.

Mani Shankara Iyer sadly misread Indian democracy, by being erudute himself by misjudging
Naredenra Modi to be unfit to the post of PM of India. Mani is so ignorant that he did not think
a thing called good governance and leadership is also required to become a good
administrator of the country. Sadly Nehru family did not have this, and did not tolerate
anyone having these capabilities.
