GENERAL SCIENCE FOR 7™" CLASS (UNIT # 7)
SHORT QUESTIONS
Define a chemical change.
A chemical change is a permanent change in which an entirely new substance is
formed with different properties. It is irreversible.
List the examples of physical and chemical changes taking place in
environment.
Examples of physical change:
* Dissolving of sugar in water.
* Change of water into steam upon heating,
* Change of ice into water upon heating.
Examples of chemical change:
* Frying an egg.
* Buming of paper.
* Food is eaten and digested.
What is hydrogenation?
Addition of hydrogen to any substance is called hydrogenation.
meant by hydrocarbons? Exp ain the u e of hydrocarbon as fuel.
* Binary compounds of hydrogen and c rbon only are called hydrocarbons.
* Petroleum is the main source of hydro arbons.
* These are mainly used as fuel in homes, in automobiles, in factories etc.
LONG QUESTIONS
Differentiate between chemical change and physical change.
Physical Change Chemical Change
No new substance is formed. New substance is formed
It can be reversed. It is irreversible.
Examples: Examples:
* Dissolving f sugar in water. + Frying an egg.
* Change f water into steam upon| + Buming of paper.
heating + Food is eaten and digested.
* Change of ice into water upon
heating.
Explain the physical and chemical properties of fertilizers, which make them
useful in agricultur
Farmers use fertilizers to improve the fertility of soil.
There are two types of fertilizers. Natural and Chemical fertilizers.
Natural fertilizers are example of wood ash, animals manure and fish meal etc.
Chemical fertilizers are prepared in factories. Nitrogen, Phosphorus and
Potassium are important elements.

GENERAL SCIENCE FOR 7™" CLASS (UNIT # 7)
+ Important physical properties of fertilizers are particle size, density, particles
hardness, moisture contents etc.
+ Ina fertilizer, smaller particles dissolve in water faster. Hard particles also
make the fertilizer less dusty.
Explain reversible and irreversible changes with examples.
Reversible Change:
* A change that can be undone or reversed is called a reversible change.
* It is temporary change.
It does not create new materials.
For example melting of chocolate, mixing of salt in water, drying of a wet cloth
etc.
A change that cannot go back is called irreversible change.
It is a permanent change like a chemical change.
New materials are always formed.
For example we cannot change the cake into its i gredients again. Rusting of
iron, rotting of egg are irreversible changes.
