Industries worldwide are increasingly turning towards renewable sources of energy generation as we seek
to find ways of powering our world without destroying our planet. On our MSc Renewable Energy
Engineering course you’ll explore the design, analysis and implementation of renewable energy projects in
depth.
We’ll equip you with the engineering knowledge and practical skills you need to develop and implement creative solutions to the
engineering problems you’ll encounter when capturing and converting renewable energy. You’ll gain a deep understanding of
system design and analysis, project development and implementation.
Throughout this course you’ll make use of lab and field-testing facilities for measuring and monitoring the performance of
different renewable energy systems, such as wind turbines, photovoltaic power systems and heat pumps.
You’ll also learn to use various tools for component and system design, as well as simulation of the performance and monitoring
of renewable energy systems. Some of the tools you’ll get to use include Matlab/Simulink, GH WindFarmer and WAsP for wind
farm design; PVsyst for photovoltaic system design; and Labview for system monitoring.
• You’ll benefit from our new £35 million Engineering Innovation Centre (EIC), which provides an integrated space for
teaching and research with direct links to industry
• Through our facilities at the EIC you’ll get the chance to work on live, real-world projects with commercial partners in state-
of-the-art facilities
What You’ll Do
You’ll have the chance to undertake a professional placement in industry (this will extend your study time by six to twelve
months)
We offer an additional short course enabling you to gain valuable extra skills in areas such as electric circuits, rotating
machines, maths and more
Year 1
Compulsory Modules
Optional Modules
This module will develop the skills necessary for you to conduct technical studies at an advanced level effectively.
The aim of this module is for you to undertake an advanced-level piece of work including some significant elements of research
and originality. You'll specify, plan, execute and report a programme of work leading to the design of a system, service or
product, incorporating aa range of aspects involving the study of current research or advanced developments.
The module aims to provide you with the engineering knowledge for various renewable energy technologies, scientific
understanding of the contributions which renewable sources can make, the technologies used to harness them, and limitations
associated with their uses and practical skills in developing renewable energy projects.
MP4709: Energy Systems
The aims of this module are to provide you with knowledge of energy systems and technologies, consider the merits in terms of
energy sustainability, renewable technologies, economical and environment impact, investigate electricity generation,
transmission and distribution, smart grids, energy storage, fuel cells and nuclear power, and finally consider the legislation to
date and recommends future changes for increased efficiency.
The module aims to provide you with the fundamental engineering knowledge and practical skills for the design and analysis of
renewable energy systems, and the integration and applications of renewable energy systems with energy storage and
distribution.
On this module, you'll gain an understanding of scientific method, be provided with opportunity to develop generic skills of
investigation and related project management. You'll study subject-specific techniques or contextual problems and understand
arguments on the nature of science and pseudo-science.
In this module you'll synthesise bearing designs that minimise power loss; evaluate bearing material or coat selections that
minimise friction and wear; employ ISO standards in the design of lubricant management systems; design condition-monitoring
solutions for industrial machines based on an understanding of their performance and running characteristics; and synthesise
reliability and maintainability analyses of mechanical or electrical devices.
In this module we will introduce you to engineering management systems, exploring sustainability, energy management, waste
management, Health and Safety management, life cycle analysis and quality management.
This module introduces you to methods of computer interfacing of industrial or scientific instruments and data processing for
monitoring and control of engineering processes. It provides an understanding of the use of advanced instrumentation and
sensing methods and will consider the application of signal processing methods and system design methods.
Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of our published course information. However, our programmes
are subject to ongoing review and development. Changing circumstances may cause alteration to, or the cancellation
of, courses. Changes may be necessary to comply with the requirements of accrediting bodies or revisions to subject
