Quick Reference Guide
Cooling System Air System
Check cooling system level before each trip. n Not maintaining your air system is the most expensive mistake
\\376\\377\\000\\t you can make.
n All coolant should be tested for freeze protection and dilution
\\376\\377\\000\\t at least twice per year. A refractometer (e.g. Fleetguard CC2806) n Changeair filter based on chassis manufacturer time recommendation
\\376\\377\\000\\t is much more accurate than floating ball hydrometers. \\376\\377\\000\\t
or more frequently if operating in dusty conditions.

n Coolant must be maintained according the chassis n The air restriction indicator should not be solely relied upon for
\\376\\377\\000\\t manufacturer’s recommendation. Most recommend \\376\\377\\000\\t
air filter replacement.
\\376\\377\\000\\t changing coolant at 5 years of service.
n Loose or broken clamps, hoses, or piping can lead to dirt entry
n When having your motorhome serviced, insist on using \\376\\377\\000\\t\\000\\t \\376\\377\\000\\t
into the engine requiring engine overhaul.
\\376\\377\\000\\t the coolant that was originally used by the manufacturer or \\376\\377\\000\\t\\000\\t
\\376\\377\\000\\tequivalent.
\\376\\377\\000\\t Oil System
n There are many formulations of coolant. It is ideal to use the \\376\\377\\000\\t\\000\\t
\\376\\377\\000\\t coolant formulation that the motorhome was originally filled with. Check oil level before each trip.

n Mixingcoolant formulations can result in loss of protection of the n The X15 requires 1 gallon of oil to move the level on the dipstick
\\376\\377\\000\\t
engine and other components in the cooling system. \\376\\377\\000\\t from add to full.

n All coolants used in the ISX15 or X15 must meet Cummins \\376\\377\\000\\t\\000\\t n For normal engine operation, Cummins recommends the use
\\376\\377\\000\\t 14603 or 14439 specification. \\376\\377\\000\\t of a high quality 15W40 or 10W30 heavy duty engine oil that \\376\\377\\000\\t\\000\\t
\\376\\377\\000\\t meets the requirements of Cummins® 20086 specification (API
Engine Coolant Formulations include: \\376\\377\\000\\t
classification CK-4).

n Older traditional Heavy Duty Coolants are typically green in \\376\\377\\000\\t\\000\\t n APIclassification FA-4 engine oils are NOT recommended for
\\376\\377\\000\\t color. These coolants require testing twice per year for proper motorhomes.
\\376\\377\\000\\t
\\376\\377\\000\\t
additive (SCA) concentration. 3 way test strips are available \\376\\377\\000\\t\\000\\t
\\376\\377\\000\\t from Fleetguard in 4-packs (CC2602A). n The use of synthetic oils is allowed but does NOT justify the \\376\\377\\000\\t\\000\\t
\\376\\377\\000\\t extension of the oil drain interval.
n Fill for Life Coolants (example: Fleetcharge) are typically \\376\\377\\000\\t\\000\\t
\\376\\377\\000\\t pink in color. These coolants require testing for proper additive n Break in period oil changes are not required on Cummins engines.
\\376\\377\\000\\t
concentration.
n Cummins engines are designed to run on commercially available
n Organic Additive Technology Coolants (example: Fleetguard \\376\\377\\000\\t\\000\\t \\376\\377\\000\\t
oils without the need for supplemental additives. Cummins does
\\376\\377\\000\\t Compleat ES OAT, Peak Final Charge, Shell Rotella ELC) can \\376\\377\\000\\t
NOT recommend or require supplemental oil additives.
\\376\\377\\000\\t
vary in color and may require addition of a chemcial extender \\376\\377\\000\\t\\000\\t
\\376\\377\\000\\t before the change interval is reached. n Oil
analysis can be helpful in detecting contaminants, but does
\\376\\377\\000\\t
NOT justify extension of the oil drain interval.
n Coolant filters may have chemical additives. Buying “blank” \\376\\377\\000\\t\\000\\t
\\376\\377\\000\\t non-chemical filters and using liquid additives, if needed, is \\376\\377\\000\\t\\000\\t
\\376\\377\\000\\trecommended.\\376\\377\\000\\t Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)
n Cummins engines built since 2010 require the use of DEF. DEF
Fuel System \\376\\377\\000\\t
equipped engines achieve greater fuel economy.

n Purchase fuel from high volume fuel retailers to avoid issues n DEF is non-toxic, non-polluting, and non-flammable.
\\376\\377\\000\\t with water or microbes.
n DEF fluid must meet ISO 22241-1 specification.
n Engines built since 2002 can use up to B20 biodiesel. Pre 2002
\\376\\377\\000\\t engines can use B5. n For maximum shelf life (18 months) store DEF in a sealed
\\376\\377\\000\\t container at temperatures below 78F (26C).
n It is best to avoid storing your motorhome with biodiesel.
n DEF will freeze at 11F (-12C) but will not degrade when frozen.
n Cummins engines are designed to run on commercially
\\376\\377\\000\\t available diesel fuel without the need for additives. n DEF tanks and lines are designed to accommodate freezing.
