9591-102-102-PVM-B-084-02 Duct Metallic Expansion Joint

This document is an engineering transmittal from BHEL responding to comments from NTPC on a general arrangement drawing for metallic expansion joints for ducts in a 800 MW fossil boiler project in Telangana, India. BHEL addresses 5 comments from NTPC, providing clarification on joint thickness, toggle design parameters, installation/fabrication lengths, stitch welding details, and convolute selections. BHEL notes design restrictions for thinner joints and that toggle design considers lateral expansion. Lengths are the same for installation and fabrication. External stitch welding and higher convolute selections near air heaters are also noted.

SN NTPC COMMENTS BHEL REPLY
1 Why BHEL has taken lesser thickness for HRCEJ as compared to FRCEJ, HRCEJ has lesser thickness (1.6mm)
BHEL to clarify. because of manufacturing restriction
with corner radius of 305 mm when
compared to 610mm for FRCEJ. HRCEJ
are used for smaller expansion value.
2 As BHEL is using the toggle to counter the effect of lateral expansion hence Toggle length and no. of convolutes at
BHEL to indicate the same in the document. Further, BHEL to give the the end of toggle are decided based on
relation between toggle length and the lateral movement.
the lateral expansion movements and
same is given in the duct erection drgs
to site.
3 Please provide the installation length and fabrication length for each MEJs. Installation and fabrication length are
same which are shown in GA of
metallic expansion joint as FRCEJ style-
1=186mm, style-2=272mm, style-
04=554mm etc.
4 stitch welded from outside Noted and drg updated.

5 Based on the no of convolutes mentioned in Schedule of expansion joint Noted , selections of higher no. of
,the statement does not always hold true.BHEL to refer our comment in convolutes will serve the purpose near
Schedule of expansion joint in this regard.
