Filipino Vaccine Choice Debate

Mandatory vaccination against Covid-19 should not be implemented for Filipinos according to the author. The government should focus on increasing access to vaccines and providing education to encourage voluntary vaccination rather than forcing it. Forcing vaccination could worsen issues due to loss of jobs or income. While vaccines are important, people should have the freedom to choose and the right information to make informed choices. The focus should be on distribution and information over mandates.

I. Introduction

Is vaccination really compatible for all? You see, all around the world was
suffering because of the outbreak of Covid-19. Lot of lives were taken. Some are still
inside and outside the hospitals for medication. The initial protocol of World Health
Organization to lessen the amount of people having Covid-19 was to conduct a
quarantine and lock down. It lessened the spread, but this wasn’t enough. We know that
every deadly virus needed to be killed. That’s why World Health Organization produces
vaccines against Covid-19. There are lot’s of vaccines that have been produced. Some
of this are Pfizer, Sinovac, AstraZeneca, and Johnson and Johnson. This was
distributed around the world to provide protection to the health of the people. But every
medication have it’s side effects. There are some speculations that people lost their
lives because of Covid-19 vaccines(Caul,2021). Some people can experience mild side
effects but the experts says it is normal. But, not all can handle the side effects this is
because of weak immune system or immunocompromised. According to Our Health
Service website, COVID-19 vaccines may be less effective for them than other people.
Because their immune system may not respond as well to vaccination, they could still
be at risk of becoming severely ill from COVID-19.They are also at risk of COVID-19
infection lasting for longer. This kind of informations have been spread throughout the
internet. That’s why some people are afraid to get vaccinated or chose not get
vaccinated. Mandatory vaccination could not solve this misinformation. The more you
force people to get vaccinated, the more they become afraid.

II. Background

Coronavirus first started on late 2019 at Wuhan, China. Coronavirus disease

(COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It spread so
quickly from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they
cough or sneeze. This virus was 380,321,615so devastating that according to World
Health Organization (WHO), 380,321,615 are the confirmed cases as of February 2022
including 5,680,741 globally and it keeps on rising every single day. There are ways to
not be infected from the virus including wearing facemask, hand sanitizing and social
distancing. But this is not enough. WHO distributed Covid-19 vaccines and as of
February 2022, 10,040,766,359 vaccine doses have been administered. This
vaccination campaign is successful as it seems. But the Philippine Government suggest
that vaccination should be mandatory because of the increasing number of cases here
in the country.
Vaccination is already implemented, there is no sense in making it a mandatory.
It could be mandatory for the frontliners because they face different people very single
day and it is scary. However, it should not be mandatory for all. There are a lot of
people have chosen not to get vaccinated because of the headlines of different news
and articles. A poll conducted by the Social Weather Stations from September 2020
showed that 64% of adult Filipinos were now willing to get vaccinated against the
coronavirus, up from 55% in June 2021. The government goal is to increase the number
of vaccinated people that’s why they want to make it mandatory. It is not necessary to
make it mandatory to get that numbers but instead encourage the people by spreading
right information about the vaccines and the importance of it, not by forcing them and
put them in jail. It is very inhuman by suing people because of not getting a vaccine.

The government should make sure that there are stocks of vaccine when people
decided to get vaccinated. People should make their own choices and not the
government. It is on person if he/she will get a vaccine or not. The day will come that
the people will be encourage to get vaccinated. Moreover, there are lot of people who
are willing to get vaccinated but the cannot get a vaccine because of accessibility
problems. Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) spokesman Alan A.
Tanjusay said low vaccine supply in some provinces remained a problem. “It’s
discriminatory and unfair to workers who have a difficulty accessing limited and
inadequate supply of vaccines, and to employers and business owners who can’t buy
vaccines for their employees,” he said. This should be the focus of the government
instead of making it mandatory. See, people are willing to be vaccinated by their choice
but the shortage supply of vaccines makes it hard for them to get vaccinated.

Other people are afraid because of misinformation or lacking information about

the importance of the vaccine. Government should working on bringing information to
people about how the vaccine is important. Party-list Rep. Carlo Isagani T. Zarate cited
that the government planed to scare people(mandatory vaccination) to get vaccinated
instead of convincing them with a good explanation. He also added that Public
information is the key to show more Filipinos the importance of vaccination against
Covid-19

III. Conclusion

Vaccination is a must for all to solve this crises. But, make it mandatory can
make it worsen because of forcing them against their choice. If they push it, there are
lots of Filipinos that will be jobless and it can result to downfall of the economy of the
country. Government should focus more on encouraging people and teaching them the
right information so that the number of vaccinated people should increase and now they
can call it a true achievement.
