What is outlining?
In writing an essay, it is important that you stick to the main idea, and establish
clarity in organization of ideas. With this, you will avoid discussing irrelevant ideas, as
well as achieving logical sequence of ideas.
Outlining is a process of planning the structure of your essay. According to
scribbr.com, outlining “involves writing quick summary sentences or phrases for every
point you will cover in each paragraph, giving you a picture of how your argument will
unfold.” At times, your English teachers would ask you to create an outline so that they
can have an introductory idea on how you would present your essay. Though an essay
outline is not a mandatory requirement, it is advantageous to create one than having none
at all. One of the advantages of creating an outline is it helps you limit the ideas that you
will discuss in your essay. Sometimes, students find themselves shifting away from the
main idea of their essay. Through outlining, you keep your ideas grounded on the essay’s
central idea.

Outlines can be modified according to the writer’s intention. The template below
is an example of a number-letter sequence outline for a four-paragraph essay:

I. Introduction
A. Hook
B. Background
C. Thesis statement
II. First Main Idea
