What is outlining?
In writing an essay, it is important that you stick to the main idea, and establish
clarity in organization of ideas. With this, you will avoid discussing irrelevant ideas, as
well as achieving logical sequence of ideas.
Outlining is a process of planning the structure of your essay. According to
scribbr.com, outlining “involves writing quick summary sentences or phrases for every
point you will cover in each paragraph, giving you a picture of how your argument will
unfold.” At times, your English teachers would ask you to create an outline so that they
can have an introductory idea on how you would present your essay. Though an essay
outline is not a mandatory requirement, it is advantageous to create one than having none
at all. One of the advantages of creating an outline is it helps you limit the ideas that you
will discuss in your essay. Sometimes, students find themselves shifting away from the
main idea of their essay. Through outlining, you keep your ideas grounded on the essay’s
central idea.
Outlines can be modified according to the writer’s intention. The template below

E. VALUING
1. How are you going to show your commitment in maintaining cleanliness of your
home?
F. Generalization
Outlining refers to the process of organizing ideas as how they should appear in
an essay. It also helps the writer limit ideas, so that he/she will not depart from the
essay’s central idea.
An outline is presented in a summarized form and arranged logically. It is also
presented in bulleted form, wherein one of its most common structures is the
number-letter sequence.
Outlining is not limited to listing down ideas. It is important that you research for
relevant primary and secondary sources, categorize information according to
themes or intentions, and arrange ideas in a manner that is brief and direct to the
point.
As you write your essay, expect changes in the outline’s sequence.
IV. Evaluation
Directions: Write TRUE if the statement is factual, and FALSE if not. Write your
answers in a separate answer sheet.
