Deploying the Data Storage Reliability Upgrade using
PowerVision Configuration StudioTM
Introduction
Release 2.3.20008 of the bootloader with configurations compiled with PowerVision
Configuration Studio™ 2.3.2, 2.4.2, or 2.6.2 or later improves the reliability of data storage in
the PowerView™ Display Models PV450, HV/HVS450, PV480, HV700, PV780, and HVS780.

These instructions will step you through the process of updating the bootloader and
configuration software on displays built prior after June 2013 (date code J7).

This document describes how to use PowerVision to upgrade a display that is currently in use,
and assumes you have a working knowledge of PowerVision and how to update display
software.

The Reliability Upgrade Explained

All flash memory chips are susceptible to read/write errors. It is crucial to have a robust
mechanism that can detect and correct errors in flash memory. Flash memory can have yield-
related issues at the chip manufacturer. Additionally, flash memory has a finite number of
write/erase cycles before the wear begins to deteriorate the integrity of the storage. Therefore,
robust code that can detect and correct errors in flash memory has been added.

Error Correction Code (ECC) techniques store data in such a way that errors in the data can
be identified and corrected. As the density of flash memory continues to increase, the ECC
algorithm complexity has also increased to improve the reliability of the non-volatile memory.

We have improved the ECC algorithm which required a change in the bootloader and the full
install” configuration software (i.e. OS, Application, and Configuration). The benefits of
updating the software are:
• Improved reliability of the data content in memory
• Faster cold boot-up time
• Faster reads/writes from non-volatile memory

Without the update to the software, a small percentage of end users may experience issues
exhibited by:
• The display does not boot-up and screen is dark or shows “Booting…”
• The display will not enter the bootloader mode
• The display that has been running for a long period of time may stop operation

Using PowerVision with Various Displays
Displays produced after June 2013 (date code of J7 or later) include the latest software to
support more reliable read and writing of data. This change involves a new format of the data
stored on the display and creates compatibility issues. The following versions of PowerVision
are compatible with displays that have Bootloader 2.3.2 or later installed:

• PowerVision – 2.3.20005 or later

• PowerVision – 2.4.20005 or later

• PowerVision – 2.6.20017 or later

NOTE: If you attempt to load a configuration produced from an older

version of PowerVision, it will fail to install and return an error code 404 or
308, indicating an incorrect format.

Displays produced before July 2013 do NOT directly support the latest data format. In order to
update these displays, you should continue to use your existing version of PowerVision OR
update the display and move to the latest version.

NOTE: If you attempt to load a configuration produced from a newer

version of PowerVision, it will fail to install and show a question mark on
the screen.

Before you Begin

The PowerVision Configuration Studio configuration (.murphyConfig) file is required to rebuild
a “full install” (update-full.tar.gz) file using this method.

One of the steps requires a USB connection on your display. If you do not have a USB
connection on your display, contact Enovation Controls Support to acquire a wiring harness
which includes this connection.

Upgrading a Display with PowerVision

NOTE: THIS METHOD ERASES ALL DATA STORED ON THE

DISPLAY SUCH AS MACHINE HOURS, USER SETTINGS AND
DATA LOGS.
Step Action

1 Download the Field Upgrade Package.

We have created a small upgrade package that will update any affected display
(450/700/780 only) with the latest reliability upgrade. This upgrade will reformat
the display and install a new boot loader.

The file (update-loader.tar.gz) is available on the PowerVision Forum

http://forum.fwmurphy.com/viewforum.php?f=3.

Please place this file on a blank thumb drive (USB drive) which will be used to
upgrade the display in a later step.

NOTE Save this file as you will need to use it for all displays that need the update.

2 Download the latest version of PowerVision

We have updated all versions of PowerVision to support the latest data format
required by the reliability upgrade. You can download the latest version of your
preferred major release at

http://forum.fwmurphy.com/viewforum.php?f=3.

Please note that you do NOT have to move from the major version (2.3, 2.6
etc.) of the software you are currently using. For example, if you are on Version
2.3, download the 2.3.2xxxx version which includes support for the new data
format.

3 Generate a new Full install of your configuration using PowerVision by opening

your “.murphyConfig” configuration and using theTools/Generate Full Install
command.

Save the resulting file (update-full.tar.gz) to the same thumb drive (USB) drive
you used in Step 1.

Step Action

NOTE To complete the next step you will need to access the USB connection on the
display. If you do not have a USB Connection on your display, contact
Enovation Controls Support to acquire a wiring harness which includes this
connection.

4 Insert the thumb drive into the USB drive with the display turned off.

5 Hold down the top right key on the display.

6 Power ON the display.

7 When you see the following image, you have entered the bootloader.

NOTE If you do not reach this screen, you likely have an inoperable bootloader and
you will need to use the Reliability Upgrade Field Instructions to update the
display.

8 Complete the Bootloader Install

Using the keys on the display, select the up and down arrow to choose the file
you copied in Step 1 (update-loader.tar.gz). Once you see the file name on
the screen, hit the right arrow to begin the install.

After the display installs the bootloader, the display will automatically reboot and
return to the bootloader screen.

9 Complete the Configuration Install

Select the up and down arrow to choose the file you created in Step 2 (update-
full.tar.gz). This is your configuration updated to support the new data format.
Once you see the file name on the screen, hit the right arrow to begin the install.

When the process is complete, it will reboot into the configuration and the
upgrade is complete.
