Percussive Sonorities
ch Key click with embouchure hole stopped: cover the embouchure
hole by placing it against chin or by rolling flute up ogainst
upper lip. Embouchure hole must be completely sealed,
Pitch sounding is given.
(T) Tongue stop: with regular fingering of pitch givens make a
percussive attack by rapidly and forcefully thrusting tongue into
embouchure hole. First, place embouchure hole between lips
$0 that all air blown will pass through flute. The tongue
is aided in striking by a strong, fast exhalation.
Singing and Playing
PR Square noteheads indicate pitches to be sung, either with
or without regularly played notes. Always sing softly!
Use the syllable given and be sure to sing in the octave written.
(Tha sung notes ‘should be in every vocal range.) Octave transpo-
sitions will interfere with desired effect.
Other Notation
2x) Bending: by rolling the flute inwards and lipping the
pitch downwards, the pitch range indicated can be produced.
sp Glissando: by making the fingering changes indicated under
the baginning and ending pitches in each case, smooth
glissandi can be produced.
Residual tone: an unfocused air stream that makes a
noisa-likey rushing sound. Use the regular fingering
of the pitches given.

AETERLIGHT is a dramatic work, and is meant to be performed with a sense
of power, expansiveness and control. It is notated without bar lines in order
for cach performer to phrase with freedom while still respecting the score. As
the flutist achieves an increased dynamic range for the multiphonics, the tempo
may be slowed. AFTERLIGHT should be played with the maximum range of
tone colors and dynamics.
