My choice - Danger is a very important part of the play, “Noughts and Crosses”. Explain how the
playwright Dominic Cooke makes the element of danger very strikingly on THREE occasions in
the play. In your answer, you should refer to at least TWO techniques the writer uses, such as
characters’ words and actions, plot, description, dialogue, symbolism, tone, mood, reflection,
irony and diction/ word choice.
“ Being in and being accepted are two different things ;'' Said from the nought Callum , is
a true statement that exists in our world today. For example a Hatian who is not a Bahamian
living The Bahamas , They are physically here but not seen nor accepted as Bahamians. This is
clearly an act of discrimation. Noughts and Crosses written by Malorie Blackman truly shows
me no matter what race , nationality , or color danger can be presented in all forms .
Indeed, the setting is important in showing the severity of danger being displayed in the
novel. Danger happened in all shorts , From , sucide to homicide and from even bullying.
Similarly we can see that students are treated exactly how Callum and his noughts friends were
treated on the first day of school , when the Crosses were uncontrollably protesting, continually
chanting “No blankers in our school”. This displays that the world Callum and Sephy live in is a
drastic world of ours. Another way we can see danger in action is when Lynette was being
beaten by a group of noughts then surprisingly commits sucide. Lynette had dated a Cross ,
who was attacked along with her who were left for dead. After this accident Lynette always
believed that she was a Cross and she frequently asked where her boyfriend was. Lynette then
realised that she was a nought and had committed sucide by walking in front of a bus. That
particular scene showed me that the things we say to people can cause them to do much more
dangerous and harmful things.
Subsequently , danger also took form in the presence of Callum's death. Callum was to
be hanged for the involvement of Sephy’s kidnapping. Callum as a nought knew that it was
going to happen because of more racist reasons , also with the past experience with his father
Ryan , when he tried to escape and he died when climbed into the electric fence. In conclusion
the word “danger” is one of the most powerful words in the novel the writer used. That word
significanfies everything bad that has happened in noughts and crosses. One thing that i can
say that i learnt is that things will happen according to order.
