To gain a working familiarity with the unit, itis recommended that tbe connected initially oan oscilloscope, so that ‘effects of the various cootols on the output waveforms can be ‘observed. Use this manual as required for reference until becoming accustomed to the operating procedures. FREQUENCY AND WAVEFORM SELECTION 1 Intl. verify thatthe DUTY CYCLE (14), CMOS LEVEL (13), DC OFFSET (2), -204B (11), switches ae in the OUT postion (released). Tis will produce a Symmetrical waveform unaffected by the other conto. 2 Plug the unic ito an appropriate power source and tur it on by ‘engaging the POWER switch (1) 3. Select the dested waveform (SINE, SQUARE, ot TRIANGLE) by ‘engaging one of the FUNCTION switches (3) Phase relationships ofthe waveforms are shown in Fig. 2 4, Select the fequeny f the waveform by engaging on ofthe RANGE ‘swches (2). Rotate the COARSE{(16)fequencycontrolto quickly st the output frequency to the approximate desired value. The FINE (15) fre- ‘queney contol can thea be usedto easily et the ourputothe specific ‘desired value. The fequency selected is availabe at the OUTPUT vek (6). In addition. a digital signal, ether TTL or CMOS is ailable atthe TTLICMOS jack (7) (eter tothe “TTLICMOS ‘OUTPUT section ofthis manta Figure 2. Output Waveform and Phase Relationship 6. Adjust the amplinude of tbe ouput as ested using the OUTPUT. LEVEL contol (4). Rotation of this congo varies the amplitade ‘from maximum 0 20db below maximum. An addtional atenvation ‘of =20db is available by pushing in the -204B switch (11). The attenuation faciors can be combined for a tol of ~0db. The ‘maximum signal level is {0 V p- into $0.2) 7. A superimposed DC component canbe added othe output signal by engaging the DC OFFSET switch (12) to enable operation of the DC OFFSET control (5). Rotation ofthis contol adds a postive ‘or negative DC component othe output signal. The DC component Introduced isindependentof the OUTPUT LEVEL contol and can ‘be varied by £10 vols open circuited or 25 volts into $02. The DC Offset does not affexr the TTLICMOS output jack. The effect of DC OFFSET is shown in Fig. 3 CONSIDERATIONS. 1, Counterclockwite rotation ofthe COARSE frequency control de- creases the ouput fo approximately one-tenth of the maximum for te range selected (10:1). For example ifthe $0 K ‘ange is selected and the COARSE frequency contro is sett fll ‘counterclockwise, the ouput Fequency approximately 5 KHz. 2, Ris advisable to set the FINE frequency conto tothe approximate eater ofits ation before seting the COARSE frequency contol. ‘This assures that the FINE. contol wil not reach ts iit while trying to finalize the frequency setting. 3. The FINE frequency contol provides approximately 25% fre- ‘quency deviation from the COARSE control seing. This provides Vernier adjustment to easly set the frequency toa precise valu. 4, When the 5 Hz ranges selected, the gate time is 10 seconds and the Aisplay is updated once every 10 seconds. The result ofa frequency change will not be displayed unl 10 seconds late. Adjust the frequency in progressively smaller steps, waiting forthe display to Update unl the desired fequeacy is obtained. ‘5. When ourputing square waves or when using the TTL outpt, terminate the cable ino $0.2 o minimize ringing Also, keep cables as short as possible. 10 * Ak Ze 00 set Wi Maxam Sona +1 Zo B. Fig 3 ustrates the various operating conditions encountered when using the DC offiet. If the dered ‘ouput signal is large or if a large DC ote is required, an oscill- ‘Stope shouldbe asedto make sre that the desired signals obtained ‘without undesirable lipping OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS DUTY CYCLE CONTROL ‘The DUTY CYCLE contol canbe used to alte the symmetry ofthe ‘output waveform to produce waveshapes such as those shown in Fig 4 Fora square wave, symmetry variation amouns to changing the daty cyele (aio of “high” 0 “ow” time), effectively convering the inscu- ‘ment into a pulse generator. For a angle wave. the resultisaramp, and witha sine wave, distorted waveshapecalleda sewed sine is produced. ‘The Model 40114 provides for symmetry variation fom 15% to 85%. 1. Select the waveform desired either SINE, SQUARE or TRIANGLE. 2. Engage the DUTY CYCLE switch (14) and adjust the DUTY ‘CYCLE contol (10) forthe desired waveshape. Clockwise rotation ‘rom center results in an inerease in square wave duty cycle, and changes the sine and triangle waves as shown inthe top waveform of each pair of Fig, 4. Counter-clockwise rotation results in the bottom waveform in each pair. 3 Varying he duty cycle sting results inaslightchangein frequency, Adjust the COARSE. and FINE frequency contol as required, Figure 4. Effects of Symmetry Variation. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS ‘TTUcMos OUTPUT ‘The TTL/CMOS output jack provides a fat rise time square wave ‘urpet.Eithera fixed TTL ora variable CMOS output level i available “The output is positive with respect to ground and can be used as an ‘extemal syne pulse for oscilloscopes or a a variable Frequency signal source for exercising logic circuits. Because ofthe fst rise time of this ‘output, cable length should be minimized to limit ringing and overshoot 1. Select he desired frequency range and adjust the frequency controls 235 required. The OUTPUT LEVEL and DC OFFSET conzols have no effect on the signal atthe TTLICMOS jack. 2, When the CMOS LEVEL switch (13) is OFF, 8 TTL signal is ‘urpat atthe TTLICMOS jack. Select a CMOS signal by engaging the CMOS LEVEL switch and adjust the level of the signal by rotating the CMOS LEVEL coavol VOLTAGE CONTROLLED FREQUENCY OPERATION ‘The Model 4010A canbe operated as a vltage-conolled generator by using an external contol volage applied tothe VCG INPUT jack. The ‘externally applied voltage will vary the frequency whichis preselected by the range switches and the frequency coats. Applying approxi- ‘ately +10 V with the COARSE control fll clockwise dresses the ‘ouput frequency by about 100 times (2100: rao). 1. Select the desired frequency range and waveform, 2 Set the staring fequency with the COARSE contol. Apply a positive DC voltage tothe VCG INPUT input jac (9) 0 decrease the frequency. voltage from Oto +10'V will cause the frequency to decrease bya factor of 100if the COARSE Frequency contol is set at maximum CW rotation, For example, i te starting frequency {is 500 kHz. applying +10 V will change the output frequency 105 kite, 3. To operate the function generator as 2 sweep generator, apply a positive going ramp signal to the VCG INPUT jack. As the mp Voltage increases, the frequency decreases. The ate of sweep can be adjusted by varying the frequency of the rump signal 4. Specific frequencies canbe selected by aplying a fied de voltage to the VCG INPUT jack or the frequencies can be stepped by applying a stepped de voltage. 5. Do ot apply more than #15 volts (de or de + a peak) othe VEG. INPUT jack Inpus of more than 15 volts will not cause any further shift inte frequency and could cause damage to the gener. ‘OUTPUT PROTECTION CONSIDERATIONS Use care when conaectng the function generator ouput to signa {injection point. Excessive voltage at the point of signal injection ofthe funetion generator can causes internal damage, Under normal operation. the generaoe output should never be connected to an external voltage ‘ther than low de values hat can be matched withthe DC OFFSET ‘controiThe Model 401 Ais overload protected so that shorting the output, ‘even continuously, will not cause damage. A fuse has been added in series with the OUTPUT jack to help protect the instrument from damage by connection to excessive extemal voltage. Damage ofthis ype usually occurs by accidentally connecting the ‘output the function generator 1 a voltage in he equipment under test. ‘The following protective measures are strongly recommended: 1, The user should understand the equipment under test wel enough to idenfy valid signal injection pont (i: the base ofa transistor, (OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS ‘logic input of a gate etc). The voliage at valid signal injection points is rarely high enough to damage the instrument. 2, iin doubt about the safety ofa signal injetion point, measure the Woltage present atthe itended point of signal injection before ‘Connecting the function gesertor output that point '3. When applying the main output ofthe function generator toa circuit point containing a de level, adjust the DC OFFSET contol s0 that the de level tthe main oufpat matches the circuit voltage. “4, Connect the TTL ourpat only to TTL evel circuits. Connect the ‘CMOS output only to CMOS circuits. Measure the Vec of thecircuit Sider text and adjust the CMOS LEVEL control as instructed in the mancal 5.
