Now before we proceed with our new lesson WRITING AN APPLICATION LETTER FOR EMPLOYMENT

To start our lesson for today, let us set first your learning objectives for today’s lesson:

Now, let us proceed to the lesson proper with the topic writing an application letter.

DEF.

I know your are not oblivious with the term, right? You may have encountered it during your high school and senior
years. Now, before I present to you its textbook definition, in your own words, what is an application letter?

This letter expands upon the information you have noted in your resume. It gives you a powerful opportunity to
emphasize your most relevant qualifications and explain why you believe you're the best candidate for the job.
While you're not always required to include an application letter with your resume, it's always a good idea to do so.
This document allows you to present a persuasive argument for why you deserve a job interview. Your application
letter can also help explain your resume further, such as a long gap in employment. While a resume is confined to a
concise format, your application letter provides room for elaboration. Use the application letter to its full potential to
increase your chances of moving forward in the hiring process.

DIF. CL VS AL

The main/general difference is their conciseness. The application is much longer and with specific details while the
cover letters are shorter and only focuses on presenting the specific details.

IMPORTANCE.

Now, what do you think is the importance of Application letter? For you as a job seeker and in general, in
communication?

That’s right. The employer doesn’t know you at first, doesn’t know your background, skills and capabilities as
individual, through this letter you can create a good impact to the employer and to show your writing prowess and
how you are so eloquent in writing. It can also be a way for you to build their trust that you can be an asset to the
company.

Now, we are going to talk about the GUIDELINES IN PREPARING AN APPLICATION LETTER.

First we have Content, second format and mechanics, lastly parts of the letter.
1. Let us have the first one: Research the company and job opening

Kindly read and elucidate your understanding with this one … /

It is really an advantage to review information about the company and position. It’s best to write a new application
letter for each position you’re applying for so you can include pertinent details and show your interest in the
particular open role. Spend some time reviewing the company information, which you can likely find on the website,
as well as the position listing. Compare your qualifications and experience with the list of skills in that posting. You
may also want to think about specific experiences that have prepared you for the role, such as leading a team,
managing a major event or seminar and research.

Use Full block format, Write the fullname of the employer or HR along with their proper designation, be attentive to
spellings, mechanics and grammar. Use 12 font size and the usual San serif fonts.

3. Open the letter by describing your interest. In the first paragraph of your letter, mention the job title for which
you’re applying and where you saw the position posting. Include your specific interest in the role and company so
the reader knows this is not a generic application letter. Briefly state the main experience or qualification you have
that makes you a good fit. This is the section that will draw in the hiring manager as the reader of your application
letter, so it is important to appeal to that person quickly and succinctly.

4. You may include aspects of your personality. As you’re writing your job application letter, consider how you can
incorporate aspects of your personality while remaining professional. A friendly and engaging letter is likely to
appeal to the reader, especially when they can get an idea of how well you might fit with the team. For example,
explain in your letter you are good at connecting with children or how you value community spirit, leading a team, or
into research

5. Outline your experience and qualifications You can share your achievements, may it be in undergad or during your
previous job which can connect to the position you are applying. May it be recognition, awards like academic honors,
being service awardee. The next few paragraphs of your letter should highlight your experience, qualifications and
skills, positioned in a way that aligns with the company’s goals and mission. For example, if you are applying for a job
with a nonprofit organization that provides educational opportunities to underserved community members, you
could talk about your experience with nonprofit organizations or educational offerings. Since a job application letter
should stand on its own without a resume, it’s helpful to include details about your experience that relate to the
position to which you’re applying.

6. Showing interest into the job makes the employer think that you will do your best when you get hired for the
reason that you like it’s ways and how this job works. Example: “I saw the posting for the marketing intern role on
my university’s online job board, and I am very interested. I’m drawn to your company’s mission of innovation and
putting the customer first. I am in my final year of earning my bachelor’s degree in marketing with a minor in
communications, so I feel my educational experience has prepared me to work in a fast-paced marketing department
like the one within your organization.”In this example – she’s drawn to innovation and relations

7. Express appreciation. Before you sign off on your letter, express your appreciation to the hiring manager for
reviewing your letter and considering you for the position. The hiring manager is taking time out of their day to read
what you have written, so expressing your gratitude for that time spent is a polite and professional way to close the
document. Example: “I appreciate the time you have taken to review my application letter. Since you likely received a
number of applications and letters for this open position, I am extremely grateful for the time you have spent reading
about me and what would make me a good fit for this role.” CLose the letter. Many people use “Sincerely” or “Best”
to close the letter, although any professional sign-off is fine to include. The final line of the letter should be your full
name. If you submit a hard copy of the letter, include your signature above your typed name. When submitting an
application letter via email, you should include your contact information beneath your name, rather than including it
in the header.
Those are the 7 guidelines in writing an application letter. Anymore things to consider you’d like to add?
There are still many other things to consider like:
Do not simply repeat the content of the résumé.
Address the letter to a particular person.
Be specific with the position you are applying for.
Focus on what you can contribute to the company and not solely on your skills.
Minimize opinions about yourself. Instead, provide concrete instances that will prove your skills and character.
Highlight two or three of your most significant accomplishments or abilities.
Be accurate with your grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and usage.
Be direct to the point because some readers are impatient.
Never misrepresent yourself by overstating your experience and skills.
Do not beg for the job.
Match your letter to the job description and job requirements.

As the application letter is a professional way of communication, it should follow proper format and mechanics. Now
let us proceed to its Format and Mechanics:
A job application letter should be more professional than a thank-you card or an email to a coworker or friend. The
alignment of the document should include single spacing, one-inch margins and left alignment. It’s best to use a
professional and traditional font, such as Times New Roman, in a size from 10 to 12 points. Try to keep your job
application letter to one page. When a hiring manager reviews your job application letter, they will get their first
impression of you as a potential employee, so take time to format it professionally and keep it concise.

Now, let us proceed to the Job Application Letter Example.

Now, I know you have already encountered this topic before so I am indeed expecting that you are all familiar with
the parts of the letter right? Now let us identify its part using this example. What do you think this section belong to?

Letterheader, headings, greeting, body, closing, signature

In every letter there are three general parts of its content/message, what do you think are these?
Introduction
1. State your purpose in writing the letter.
2. Indicate your source of information: newspaper, magazine, Internet, personal contact.
3. Start with an eye-catching statement about yourself that will entice the reader to continue reading your
credentials.
4. Show your enthusiasm to work in the company.
Body
1. Present your work experience, academic qualifications, trainings, and some personal qualities with
specific evidence.
2. Be sure to organize your paragraphs. You may segregate paragraphs by theme:
(one paragraph for work experience and one for education) or by function (management, financial,
technical).
3. Tell the prospective employer the benefits of hiring you. Don't just give facts explain how these facts will
benefit the company. For instance, instead of teling the company all the trainings you had, you may just
say "I have extensive training in copyediting. You will save both time and money because i will need little
training in this area.
4. In the last portion of the body, refer the reader to a specific section of the résumé that suggests your
strongest credentials for the position.
Conclusion
1 Indicate your interest for an interview most convenient to the employer. If necessary, specify the time you
are available for an interview.
2 Indicate how the employer can contact you.
3. Express a positive response that you expect from the employer.
4 Say thank you.
