SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE RESEARCH
This action research is focused on the utilization of videos in the teaching-
learning process. With the ultimate goal of improving the performance of the learners
in Earth and Life Science particularly on the topic Understanding the History of the
Earth, the intervention Project JUVES will be introduced to the respondents.
It is anchored on Howard’s Multiple Intelligence Theory that video combines
many kinds of data such as images, motion, sounds, and text in a complementary
fashion. Thus, using videos is teaching can be adjusted to the diverse learning styles
of students.
Pre-test and posttest will be administered to the respondents in order to
identify the effect size of using Project JUVES to the respondents.

I. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

Instructional media plays a very significant role in the successful conduct of

teaching and learning process as they affect student learning outcomes in a positive

way. Nowadays, there are a multitude of instructional media that can be used by

educators in teaching students inside or even outside the classroom.

One of the learning media that teachers can use is video presentation.

Seemingly, the use of video in teaching is becoming prominent in the education

arena. Most of the teachers are now using videos in their day-to-day lessons to

facilitate the delivery of instruction while capturing the attention of the students

towards the topic being taught. In fact, numerous research studies have shown that

the use of video presentations in the classroom is greatly beneficial to students’

academic performance.

According to Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligences theory, traditional

teaching methods, including lecture and textbook approaches, may only appeal to

learners who lean toward a linguistic approach. Because video combines many kinds

of data (images, motion, sounds, text) in a complementary fashion, learning can be

adjusted to the diverse learning styles of students. Teaching methods that include the

use of video and audio “reach more students and provide more opportunities for

neural development and learning.”

According to the Alfyd (2018), “the use of creative video in education gives

some pedagogical benefits such as facilitating thinking and problem solving, assisting

with mastery learning, inspiring and engaging students and authentic learning

opportunity”. In his article, he discussed how video presentations tickle the minds of

the learners and keep them focused on the learning material being presented.

While video should be an integral part of the curriculum, it should not replace

traditional teaching methods. Research has shown that the value of video is highly

correlated to its integration within the curriculum and how it fits into the overall

instructional sequence. By using video in the classroom as a complementary tool for

learning, educators can enhance student learning and promote achievement. Hence,

in this study, the video presentation strategy will be blended with other teaching

strategies such as peer teaching, collaborative discussion, focus group discussion

and the like to ensure maximum participation on the part of the students.

In order to initially assess the prior knowledge of the learners, a diagnostic

test will be administered by the researcher lifting questions from the book in order to

ensure reliability of the test questions. This diagnostic test focuses on how the planet

Earth evolved in the last 4.6 billion years specifically on the age, major geologic time

subdivisions and marker fossils.

It is in these highlights that the researcher conceptualizes this action

research. With the hope of enhancing the abilities of students in understanding

materials that make up the Earth and the processes it undergoes, the researcher

wants to introduce Project JUVES (Jubilant Utilization of Videos in Earth and Life

Science) to the learners to hopefully improve learning outcomes.

II. RESEARCH QUESTIONS

This action research aims to determine the effectiveness of Project JUVES

(Jubilant Utilization of Videos in Earth and Life Science) in enhancing the abilities of

Grade 12 students on Understanding the History of the Earth.

Specifically, it aims to answer the following interrogations:

1. What are the scores of the respondents before and after their exposure to

Project JUVES?

2. Is there a significant difference between the pre-test and post test scores of

the respondents after exposing them to Project JUVES?

3. What is the effect size of using Project JUVES to the respondents?

III. PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION AND STRATEGY

Project JUVES (Jubilant Utilization of Videos in Earth and Life Science) is a

video-based instruction conceptualized by the researcher. It makes use of videos

requested from the Department of Science and Technology that will be presented to

the learners for the purpose of improving the abilities of Grade 12 students in

understanding the history of the Earth specifically on the age, major geologic time

subdivisions and marker fossils.

During instruction, the students will be divided into several groups. In the pre-

viewing phase, the researcher explains the purpose of the lesson and presents a

brief description of the video that will be played in the classroom.

Afterwhich, the viewing phase follows. In this stage, the researcher displays

the video to the learners. The researcher asks them to observe the video and record

important things or lessons presented while the video is played.

In the post-viewing phase, the teacher asks students to do some tasks such

as discussing the video, giving opinions on the video and answering questions about

the video. After which, the students are required to present their outputs. The

researcher processes the responses of the students highlighting important concepts

that should be derived from the videos. Finally, it is in this phase that the researcher

clears out misconceptions that students have about the lesson in order to achieve

better learning outcomes.

IV. ACTION RESEARCH METHODS

The study will make use of non-randomized quasi-experimental design

particularly one-group pre-test and posttest design as it involves only one class of

Grade 12 General Academic Strand (GAS) students who were only grouped

according to specialization but with different levels of academic performance.

A. PARTICIPANTS AND OTHER SOURCES OF DATA

The study will involve one section of Grade 12 General Academic Strand

(GAS) students under the tutelage of the researcher. Total enumeration will be

employed in the study. The respondents will be asked to answer the forty (40) – item

pre-test and posttest prepared by the researcher. Questions that will be asked in the

pre and posttest papers are lifted from the sample test questions that are suggested

from Earth and Life Science Books. To ensure the validity and reliability of the

scores, utmost honesty in the administration of the test will be observed. Said scores

will be recorded, tabulated and analyzed by the researcher for it becomes bases in

answering the research questions.

B. DATA-GATHERING PROCEDURE

The researcher will seek permission from higher authorities as to the conduct

the study. Upon the approval of the research proposal and with the permission of the

parents and students, the researcher will administer the pre-test to the respondents

as a diagnostic tool of assessing their prior knowledge and the scores will be

recorded. After which, Project JUVES (Jubilant Utilization of Videos in Earth and Life

Science) will be introduced to the respondents. After all competencies will be taken

up, the post test will be administered and the scores will be recorded and analyzed.

ensure accuracy and reliability of the gathered data:

C. ETHICAL ISSUES

A permission to conduct study will be sought from the Office of the Schools

Division Superintendent, Department of Education, Cagayan through channels.

Another letter earnestly requesting for the support of the Public Schools

District Supervisor will be sought in relation to the conduct of this study.

Upon approval of the proper authorities, the parents will be informed through

a meeting that their children are respondents of the study. Likewise, the learners will

be informed that they will become part of the study as the respondents. They will be

assured that any undertaking or data gathered will be kept strictly confidential and

that their scores on the pre-test and posttest will be treated with utmost honesty,

confidentiality and integrity. In addition, care and respect to the learners will be

observed during and even after the duration of the study. In no case that the identity

of the respondents be divulged to the public.

Moreover, rest assured that published and unpublished materials useful in the

study will be acknowledged. Carefulness will also be accounted in the study. The

researcher promises to do his best in avoiding careless errors and negligence

specially in analyzing data.

D. PLAN FOR DATA ANALYSIS

In analyzing data gathered from the respondents, the following statistical tools

will be utilized:

1. Mean and standard deviation will be used to analyze the pre-test and post

test scores of the respondents. Mean Scores will be transmuted using the

Deped Transmutation Table and the performance will be described using the

table below:
