CHAPTER 1

Background of the Study

Stress as an inescapable part of life generally touches a wide range of

groups population with no regard to their age, gender, educational status or

socio-economic status. Despite this fact, stress, depression and anxiety are

prevailing mental health problems among senior high student. Senior high

students undergo numerous educational, social environmental and lng

adjustments difficulties in the new campus atmosphere which may effect their

psychosocial well being and learning outcomes. These happen because the

new secondary educational system has a big difference in its methods of

teaching, academic requirements, type of relations between faculties and even

relations among students themselves. In short, stress seems to be very

common in senior high or college student life because senior high student need

to ensure their academic survival and prepare themselves for the further

career. It is not a surprise that much of the academic stress at the senior high

level is associated with what students learn and how they learn it.

Stress can be healthy, and adaptive people’s response to the threat by

mobilizing their energy towards the stressors. Thus it is important to note that a

certain level of stress is essential for the student in a way that motivates

students to progress in their academic journey actively, would otherwise be

inactive and uninterested creatures. May researchers have also noted that

stress is not always negative. It also partakes motivational contribution in

people’s life. Take, for instance, exam stress or academic workload may

motivate and also enhances academic achievement and creativity. However, if

individuals, fail to employ effective stress, coping mechanisms to turn, become

at a higher risk of developing sever physical and mental problems.

Statement of the Problem and Hypothesis

This study aims to determine, stress is any situation that raise negative

thoughts and feeling in person. The same situation is not suggestive or

stressful for all people, and all people do not experience the same negatives

thoughts and feelings when stressed. Extreme level of stress can cramp work

effectiveness and lead to poor academic performance and attrition. Senior high

student who experienced stressful life events also reported worse help

outcomes and reduced quality of life

If you’re constantly under stress, you can have physical symptoms, such

as headaches, an upset stomach, high blood pressure, chest pain and stress

can also lead to emotional problems, depression, panic attacks or other form of

anxiety.

Specifically it sought to answer the following question:

1. What is the stress level of a high school student?

2. What is the relationship between the level and students gender and

academic performance?

3. Is there significant of a stress?

Hypothesis

Based on the specific question above, a null hypothesis had been made:

danger and temporarily increase one’s performance in order to increase the

probability of survival. Sleep and appetite are particularly reduced while anxiety

increases. The mental changes induced by stress may contribute to the onset

or exacerbation of tinnitus.

Theoretical Framework

Hans Selye explained his stress model based on physiology and

psychobiology as General Adaption Syndrome ( GAS). His model states than

an event that threatens an organism’s well being (a stressor) leads to a three

stage bodily response: Stage 1: Alarm. Stage 2: Resistance. Stage 3:

Exhaustion. The stress a stimulus theory assumes change is inherently

stressful. Life events demands the same levels of adjustment across the

population. There is a common thereshold of adjustment beyond which illness

will result.

Stress could be part of the group illness of every human being in the

present generation (Oboegbulem 2002). She stated that people having interest

to study it have come up with a number of working definitions.

Richard and Susan (2003) stated the most researchers use the term stress

to refer to the unpleasant emotional reaction a person has when he or she

perceives an event to be threatening. Ifegwazi (2005) conceptualized stress as

a state that occurs when an organism is faced with a threatening situation that

is difficult to cope with. It is a burden or load under which a person survives or

cracks.

Significance of the Study

This study will be stress appears to connect much of this research.

Defining stress leads one to understand the role of stress in the development

of the person’s personality both physical and emotional condition. Findings

suggest that stressful student experiences heighten an individual’s response to

stress throughout life. This study provides information about stress sources

and coping strategies function as a mechanism to avoid self-depression and

failures in school activities as well as the timely evidence of stress level they

rated. Researchers agreed that stress sources of senior high students mainly

include study factors, life and economic factors, and career factors.

Furthermore this will serve as an aid for future stress.

Definition of Terms

Stress is a physical and emotional state always present in the person,

one influenced by various environmental, psychological and social factors but

uniquely perceived by the person and intensified in response when

environmental change or threat occurs internally or externally and the person

must respond.

The term “stress” ,as it is currently use was coined by Hans Selye in

1936, who defined it as “ the non specific response of the body of any demand

for change”

Psychological stress is defined as “ a particular relationship between the

person and the environment that is appraised by the person as taxing or

acceding his or her resources and endangering his or her well being Lazarus

and Folkman 1984:

Scope and Limitation

This study about level of stress in academic are experience of a lot of a

student mostly in senior high school students. Mental health are mostly

important, it make us break down, can’t cope with our study and having mental

block. Online learning can’t help to the student to their study, some of the

students stop schooling because of difficult to cope up a lesson period. Stress

can affect, lack of focus of a student and fear of failure.

Based on the review of the literature, stress could be a classified

according to the nature of the (physiological, psychological), its influence on

individual (positive eustress, negative distress), the exposure time of stressor

(accute or short term, chronic or long term). Theory of stress management was

developed and premised on the idea that stress is not direct response to as

stressor but rather one’s resources and ability to cope mediate the response

and are amenable to change, thus allowing stress to be controllable.

Dimitrov (2017) in his study claimed that stress can be addressed by

ensuring that the students give utmost importance to their welfare. Subramani

and Kadhiravan (2017) revealed the link between academic stress and mental

health among students. He endorsed that academic stress and mental health

are correlated and that students are cramped with the academic structure.

Parents and schools pressurize the students way too much for the higher

grades that disheartens the students, further to add on there is not enough

support from the parents and school in terms of guidance. It is important to

deal with stress at personal, social and institutional level. Remedies such as

feedback, yoga, life skills training, mindfulness, meditation and psychotherapy

have been found useful to deal with stress. Dimitrov (2017) in his study claimed

that stress can be addressed by ensuring that the students give utmost

importance to their welfare. The students are mentally healthy when they

perform constructively in the academic forums. They also propounded that

students from private schools are more pressurized as compared to students

from government schools due to the excess of homework and other academic

related assignments. Significant difference in mental health of students from

private and government schools was found. He asserted that students from

private schools have a different nurturing and vast exposure as compared to

government school students who belong to poor socio economic background

and lack of exposure. This is one of the reasons for the escalation of stress.

Deb et al. (2014), studied on 400 male students from five private

secondary schools in Kolkata who were studying in grades 10 and 12. 35

percent students were found to have high academic stress and 37 percent

were found to have high anxiety levels. Students with marginal grades were

said to have higher level of stress as compared to students with better grades.

Also, students involved with extra-curricular activities were noted to be more

stressed as related to those students who were not involved with it. Kaur

(2014) acknowledged that mental health of teenagers get affected due to the

academic stress. Girls with academic stress were found to have poor mental

health as compared to the boys. This was accounted on the study that parents

at times put pressure and strain on students that leads to deteriorated mental

health. Bataineh (2013) in his study measured the academic stressors

experienced by students at university. The result of the analyses showed that

there is an unreasonable academic overload, not enough time to study due to

the vast course content being covered, high family expectations and low

motivation levels are some of the reasons for the stress. Fear of failure is also

the prime reason for stress. There was no significant difference found amongst

the students from different of specializations.

Khan and Kausar (2013) concluded that stress definitely impacts the

academic performance in a negative way though no significant difference was

found as per the gender. The difference was evident between junior and senior

students. Stress, for sure, affects the ability to study efficiently

and managing the time. Studying regularly is important, this helps reduce the

academic pressure and helps them fulfill their goals. Busari (2012) found that

stress was leading to depression among secondary school students and is

linked with affect on academic achievement. Introduction to preventive

measures, teaching life skills and other therapeutic techniques should be taken

in to serious consideration. Nandamuri and Gowthami(2011) studied the stress

among students of professional studies and claimed that curriculum and

instructions parameters were most responsible for stress with 86 percent,

followed by 63 percent for placement related issues, assessment and team

work issues accounted for 41 percent and 24 percent respectively. The study

further identified various micro issues responsible for stress, and listed twelve

sub issues related to curriculum and instruction. Once the sub issues of each

parameter are identified, it provided improved vision to the academic

administrators for initiating efforts to reduce the gravity of academic stress.
