PREAMBLE
The Alumni of Mining Engineers' Association (OU & KU) and Alumni Association of University College of
Engineering (AAUCE), OU, in association with Department of Mining Engineering, UCE, OU are organizing an
International Symposium on RECENT TRENDS IN MINERAL INDUSTRY - 2022 during 23rd - 24th September,
2022 in Hyderabad. A large number of Practicing Engineers, and Scientists Academicians, Statutory Bodies
and Government Agencies from all over the world will participate to share their experiences, ideas and deliver
on the larger theme and provide roadmap for the industry.
OBJECTIVE
Mineral Industry plays a key role in the overall development of any nation in pace with the economic trends
and environmental awareness. Thus there is need to adopt sustainable mining practices with continuously
advancing technology to mitigate challenges in terms of Safety, Productivity, Societal Responsibility and Economic
viability to face the global compilation. Further, the highly capital intensive Mineral Sector is very dynamic and
needs investment & technological innovation to expand customer foot print and efficiency. The up-gradation
and modernization of technologies, managerial and other sustainable practices has become essential. There is
an urgent need to collaborate with partners, develop innovative technologies in-house, to help the Industry
remain competitive, viable and sustainable.
ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM
The mineral and metallurgical industries constitute the bedrock of industrial development in any economy as
they provide the basic raw materials for most of the industries. Mineral industry forms the backbone of a
nation's economy and growth. It is an opportunity-based investment venture with high degree of risk associated.
The risks revolve around geological uncertainties, technical inadequacies, diversified needs of the society,
commercial feasibility, economic viability, political instability and social pressures. The risks are to be minimized
by generating reliable and accurate data base during various phases of exploration and critical economic
analysis to safeguard the investment. The activities have to be truly scientific and highly professional in nature.
The mineral industry undergoes "cyclical natural ups and downs" as a consequence of global slowdown even
in major economies, with the vagaries in demand for fuels, metals and minerals.
The mineral industry provides employment to millions of people, thus safeguarding their social security. In
countries where mining is a major industry it contributes substantially to economic sustainability, but in some
cases it is also a threat to environment and health of the employees and the neighbors.
The Indian Mineral Policy opened the gates of the industry to domestic and foreign investment, much of
which was earlier reserved for the public sector. It aims to boost the country's exploration and mining and
render it more competitive.
This gives impetus to this International Symposium to deliver on new technology and global practices to
resolve the challenges and pave way for sustainable practices generating new advances and trends.
ORGANIZERS
THE ALUMNI OF MINING ENGINEERS’ ASSOCIATION (OU & KU)
The Alumni of Mining Engineers' Association (Osmania University & Kakatiya University) is a well-organized
voluntar y body working for continuous improvement in mining education and for professional
development of Mining Engineers in order to bridge the gap between the industries and academia and
foster a spirit of loyalty, enriching the sense of community amongst the key stakeholders with a network
of alumni to enhance the contribution to the society by the Universities.
The alumni are well placed in prestigious positions and bringing laurels to the industry as well as to the
nation. This two day International Symposium on Recent Trends in Mineral Industry- 2022 is one more
step to expose the practicing engineers of mining and allied industries to recent advances world over.
ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, OSMANIA UNIVERSITY (AAUCE)
Once the University College of Engineering was declared autonomous the idea of formation of Alumni
Association gained momentum. Under the dynamic leadership of the then Principal, Prof. D.C. Reddy the
first get-together of the alumni was held on Saturday the 3rd July 1996. After the revival of the Association
2
in 2015 the two subsequent executive committees under the leadership of Er. R. V. Rammohan Rao, Er. P.
Ram Reddy and Dr. D. Vijay Kumar with the support of patrons, fellow members, learned faculty and
students have set out the following objectives of the Alumni Association:
• Enhance the reputation of the University and OUCE in particular & enrich the emotional bondage
amongst the students, faculty and alumni.
• Propose and execute special projects: Buildings, technical projects, seminars, conferences, etc.
• Support meritorious & poor/ economically backward students financially by floating scholarships.
• Inspire and invoke the spirit of innovation among the students leading to finding technical solutions
to the problems of the society leading to Patents to students and the College.
In furtherance to the objectives of the Association, this International Symposium is being organized.
UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, OSMANIA UNIVERSITY (UCE, OU)
The University College of Engineering (UCE) has the distinction of being the oldest and the biggest among the
Engineering Colleges of the State of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh. Established in the year 1929, eleven years after
the formation of Osmania University, it was the 6th Engineering College to be established in the whole of
British India. The College moved to its present permanent building in the year 1947. Today it is the biggest
among the campus colleges of Osmania University. The Golden Jubilee of the College was celebrated in 1979,
the Diamond Jubilee in 1989 and the Platinum Jubilee in 2004. The College was made autonomous in 1994.
The Institute offers eight UG programmes (AI&ML, Biomedical, Civil, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronics,
Electronics and Communications, Mechanical and Mining Engineering) and 22 PG programmes in various
specializations. The University College of Engineering (A) is the first Engineering College to get ISO: 9001
Certification in Rank by NIRF, MHRD. The College also offers Ph.D., programmes in various areas of specialisation
in the various branches of Engineering. Part-time courses are also being offered at postgraduate levels.
DEPARTMENT OF MINING ENGINEERING, UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, OSMANIA UNIVERSITY
The Department of Mining Engineering was established in 1956 at University College of Engineering, Osmania
University, Hyderabad. Later, with a view to impart hands on field experience and very good exposure to the
mining industry, the Department of Mining Engineering, was relocated to Kothagudem in 1978 amidst the
coalfields of The Singareni Collieries Company Ltd. and rechristened as The Kothagudem School of Mines
(KSM). In 1994, the Kothagudem School of Mines was handed over to Kakatiya University and is being called as
UCE, KU.
The Department of Mining Engineering was re-started during 2018-19 in OUCE during Osmania University
Centenary Celebrations with M.E. in Mining Engineering, Subsequently B.E in Mining Engineering was started
from the academic year 2021-22. Establishment of this department is well supported by Industry and Alumni
of Mining Engineers.
