Investment in share market: Risks and Rewards

The term investment is positioning of funds with goal of accomplishing added income. The fundamental

quality of investment is that it involves expectation of an accolade. There is a promise that the saving will

result into some benefits in future. One invests money with a motto to grow it more and more each year.

The avenues which are available for people to invest money are many. The common and renowned ones are –

stocks , bonds , mutual funds etc.

As stock market is the most convenient form of investing money , it is one of the great ways to make

money. People have made a lot of money and on the same platform, they have lost money as well. The stock

market is poster child for high risk and high reward investing. There is no assurance or any kind of way

knowing where the stock market will fall or rise.

Share market investment is advantageous in many forms. One of the primary advantages is that there are

changes of growing money. The stock market tends to rise and fall on a regular basis. Investments in

stable companies generate profits for investors and investing in various stocks helps in building wealth by

leveraging growth in varied sectors of economy. Also , the stock market makes it easy to buy shares of

companies. One can purchase them through a broker, a financial planner, or online. On the other hand , the

stock market allows to sell the stock at any time. That’s important if cash is required urgently.

There are various types of risks involved. One of the most obvious risks of investing is that the economy

can go bad. It can fluctuate , the terrorists’ attacks in 2001 where the economy settled into a sour spell.

Another risk faced by share market investors is that of inflation. It affects the investors by destroying

their income stream’s value especially those on fixed term incomes. Sometimes, it may make a person lose

his entire investment if a company fares badly. One has to do lot of research of each and every company

before investing in it.

Hence , there is nothing wrong with being a conservative or careful investor. However, if you never take

any risk, it may be difficult to reach your financial goals. One should be aware of pros and cons and should

invest having scrutinized each and every point.

Keeping animals in the zoo is like keeping them in prison for our pleasure.

In an era where Planet Earth shows all the animals in their natural habitat , with proper explanation and

narration and above all with a dramatic art , do we really need to see animals in a captivated state. Zoos

are premises for the confinement of animals, with the intention of studying the animals and exhibiting

them to the public at large. Animals are equally precious and should equally share earth as humans instead

of being caged like they are in jail. It might happen that animals natural instincts will vanish if they are

caged in zoos. Some animals are forced to live in climates that they are not acquainted to and this is harsh.

For example, the elephant is accustomed to live in tropical climates but is forced to live in zoos in cold

countries like Canada.

The ones advocating for zoos state that they are beneficial both to the animals themselves, protecting

endangered species with specific breeding programs, and the public, as an educational tool to increase both

awareness and understanding. The opponents respond that the removal of wild animals from their habitat

is not good, they should be left in their own natural surroundings and not used as tools for public

entertainment.

The animals are forced to live in an unnatural habitat. There is not enough living space in the zoos, which

makes animals restless. It is also true that, some animals do not proliferate in zoos. Animals are physically

and mentally strong in their own habitats like forests etc rather than in zoos. They are able to run around

and hunt in larger land spaces in the wilderness. Zoos do not have such large spaces , they are confined to a

certain place and do not have movement. They can neither explore outside their cage nor go for hunting.

The entire process seems stagnant.

The zoos cater to the public at large by entertaining them by showcasing animals who are in an agitated

mood. The public only wants their enjoyment irrespective that even animals have feelings. It also depends

on how an animal feels inside a cage 24 x 7. Can we expect a human being to live like that ? Therefore ,

efforts should be made to make forests and natural habitats safe. There should be minimization of zoos

until and unless there is danger to species.

How technology can benefit banking industry

Banking was conventionally something that was done in the non-virtual world. People would go to their bank

to withdraw money, transfer funds from one place to another, check their balances etc. One would speak

to bank officers and interact with them in bank premises but with the advent of technology such things

are becoming redundant. Technology has given way to online banking where on the click of button one can

do any sort of transaction by himself.

Technology has introduced us with ATM machines , mobile applications and online banking facility on bank

websites. It allows us to withdraw money and make payment of bills without any fuss. It has reduced the

physical visits to banks. There is no need to carry a huge amount of sum in pockets as plastic money such as

credit cards and debit cards have taken the job of making payments. The applications like- paytm , phonepe

etc are also being used in making payments. With the use of Magnetic Ink – the MICR Cheque Processing

System has been developed and strategically implemented. This technology revolutionizes the cheque

clearing process from over the counter to a more systematic procedure which is fast and efficient. The

availability of loan has also developed with the development of technology and one can now avail loan within

seconds.

The banking sector has entwined the use of technology to serve the users faster and also to do more in

less time. Emerging technologies have changed the banking industry from paper and branch based banks to

digitalized banking services. Since the internet has become affordable , the transfer of data is easy. This

has also affected accounting and management system of all banks. However , technology comes at a cost

and its implementation is expensive but the rewards are limitless.

In a nutshell, the technology today is enabling the society . The facilities gained by the employees and the

consumers are immense. Banking is one such sector that has imbibed the complete benefits to the core.

Reservation: A Social Boon or Bane

The structure of reservation in India comprises of measures, such as reserving seats in the various

legislatures, government jobs, enrollment in higher educational institutions etc. The reservation promotes

the historically disadvantaged castes and tribes, listed as Scheduled Castes and Scheduled tribes (SCs and

STs) by the Government of India and also those designated as Other Backwards Classes (OBCs). The

reservation is undertaken to address the historic oppression, inequality and discrimination faced by those

communities and to give these communities a place. It is intended to realise the promise of equality

enshrined in the Constitution by its framers. As the Constitution prohibits untouchability and requires the

state to make special provision for the betterment of the SCs and STs.

People belonging to Scheduled castes and Scheduled tribes are mostly poor and uneducated. Most of them

have to do menial jobs or have to work as landless and bonded laborers. They are been tormented and

neglected by the society. The economically better people started keeping them away from the main social

stream. Hence , the need for giving them reservation was the need of the hour. These are the real people

who will be benefited from reservation and their castes and tribes would make the nation proud.

Reservation is its inevitable repercussion. It is not an injustice to anyone but a justice to those who have

been discarded by the society in the most abominable way.

Implementation of Caste-based reservation was a requirement years back but with the development India

over the years, it has more disadvantageous. One of the major disadvantage is ‘brain drain’. A deserving

student, who is hardworking, intelligent does not get opportunities on his merits because of the

reservation quotas which naturally makes him find other options and turning away from India for a better

future.

Education is the only remedy which would bring number of changes among the deprived class. It would

strengthen democratic trends and the economic programmes in the long run. When some are not ‘more

equal’ but all are ‘equally equal’ there would be no need of reservation.

Women Empowerment

There is no denial to the fact that women in India have made an ample advancement in almost seven

decades of Independence, but they still have to wrestle against many handicaps and social evils in the

male-dominated society. Many evil and masculine forces still prevail in the modern Indian society that

resists the forward march of its women folk. It is ironical that a country, which has recently acclaimed the

status of the first Asian country to accomplish its Mars mission in the maiden attempt, is positioned at the

29th rank among 146 countries across the globe on the basis of Gender Inequality Index. There has been

amelioration in the position of women, but their true empowerment is still awaited.

‘Women Empowerment’ refers to complete liberation of women from socio-economic manacles of

dependency and deprivations. The concept of empowerment flows from the word power. Empowerment of

women would mean encouraging women to be self-reliant, economically independent, have positive self-

esteem, generate confidence to face any difficult situation and incite active participation in various socio-

political development endeavors. Women empowerment means emancipation of women from the vicious grips

of social, economical, political, caste and gender-based discrimination. It means granting women the

freedom to make life choices. Women empowerment does not mean ‘deifying women’ rather it means

replacing patriarchy with parity.

Women empowerment in its actuality is identical with complete augmentation of the society. An educated

woman, with knowledge about health, hygiene, cleanliness is capable of creating a better disease-free

environment for her family. A self-employed woman is capable of contributing not only to her family’s

finances, but also contributes towards increment of the country’s overall GDP. A shared source of income

is much more likely to uplift the quality of life than a single income household and more often than not

helps the family come out of poverty trap. Women aware of their legal rights are less likely to be victims

of domestic violence or other forms of exploitations. Their inherent aptitude towards organization and

well-rounded maintenance of home makes them uniquely suited for political and civil leadership roles.
In the process of empowerment women should consider their strengths and weakness and move forward to

unfold their own potential to achieve their goals through self-development . All we need is an organized

approach from the Government and law enforcement agencies of the country focused in the right direction

that would rest only with the liberation of women from all forms of evil.

Assess the role of sports activities on the economy of a country

In the recent times sports activities has emerged as an important component of socio-economic

development of a country. The effective participation in sports enhances community health and

productivity, reduces medical expenses, imbibes discipline in character, generates great leaders, and

enhances social cohesion. The execution of a mega sporting event helps in developing infrastructure,

generates employment, secure inflow of foreign capital, generates players and athletes, and thus

contributes significantly to the economic development of a country. Therefore, it can be said that the

impact of sports on economy and society is multi-dimensional.

According to a study conducted by the United Nations in 2003, “Increasing the time spent on physical

education in schools does not reduce marks in intellectual subjects but rather improves the ability of some

students to learn and retain information.” It is shown that extra-curricular sport participation throughout

high school is a good predictor of having a job with a future .

In the 11th Five Year plan, government allocated INR 46,360 Million for development of sports in country.

Since then India had hosted Formula 1 Races, Hockey World Cup, CommonWealth Games, and Cricket

World Cup. Economic impact in sporting events can be defined as the net change in an economy resulting

from a sport event and the change is caused by activity involving the acquisition, operation, development,
and use of sport facilities and services which in turn generate visitors’ spending, public spending,

employment opportunities, and tax revenue.

To promote sports activities , the Indian government will have to make more efforts to promote every

sport . Firstly , the allocation of funds, such as the percentage of budget, should increase to broad base

sports. Secondly, sports should be made as an integral part of education system. Third, effectiveness of

developmental projects should evaluate periodically. Fourth, uniformity should be maintained in sports

activities of various states of India to provide equal participation opportunity to its citizens. Government

should revisit the sporting framework of India. Otherwise, the immense potential of country in sports can

never be realized.

Hence, it can be seen that sports play an important role in shaping up an economy and government to

promote sports in country. This will increase the business for local players who make sports equipments; it

will also provide business to airlines and other transport business, media, brokers, and a medium of

creating platform for young generation. Adventurous sports like Mountain Biking, Rafting, Cycling,

Kayaking, are also positioning in India now. Therefore , this will led to increase in employment and ,thus, will

increase money in the economy.

Demonetization and its Consequences

The term demonetisation has become a familiar name in every Indian household since the government

pulled the old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes out of circulation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to

scrap high value notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 has created a scarcity of cash in the system, leading to a lot

of discomfort and annoyance among the people. Since our economy is heavily dependent on cash and less
than half the population uses banking and internet for monetary transaction , demonetisation has hit trade

and consumption hard.

The primary objective of this move was to curb the black money, corruption and fake money menace. All

the people other than those who were indulged in malpractices welcomed the move. The whole opposition

shook hand against this move under one pretense or the other. They called this decision a draconian law

and wanted the govt to roll back it. Though the people faced a lot of inconvenience owing to shortage of

funds, they did not criticize the government for the move.

There are visible advantages for demonetization and its consequences has benefited people. The first

impact shall be that people will have lower expenditure power which will restrict them to make higher

purchases. There shall be no lavish expenditures on marriages and other ceremonies. So the society will

grow lesser materialistic and people more prudent. Corruption shall be down to a great extent as people will

stop the tendency of accumulating money using wrong means. This big move will certainly abridge the gap

between the haves and the have-nots. However, there may be some difficulties for a couple of months. But

this inconvenience shall be temporary and for short-term. Also , it will help the Government to trace the

black money. The demonetization policy will force people to pay income tax returns. Most of the people who

have been hiding their income are now forced to come forward to declare their income and pay tax on the

same.

On the other hand , demonetization has caused huge inconvenience to the people. They are running to the

banks to exchange, deposit or withdraw notes. The sudden announcement has made the situation become

chaotic. Business has been deeply affected . Due to the cash crunch, the entire economy has been made to

come to a standstill. Many poor daily wage workers are left with no jobs and their daily income has stopped

because employers are unable to pay their daily wage. The government has to bear the cost of printing of

the new currency notes. It is also finding it difficult to put new currency into circulation.

However, if we compare the merits and demerits, it will be safe to conclude that the former outweighs the

latter. Even though there is suffering and agony among the masses but the forecast is that its benefits

will be seen in the long run. The government is taking all the necessary steps and actions to meet the

currency demand and soon the trial and tribulations of the people will be over with the smooth flow of the

new currency.

Can RTI eradicate corruption?

September 28 is celebrated internationally as Right to Know Day, giving prominence to the critical

importance of people’s right to access information held by their governments. In India, following a

nationwide campaign led by grassroots and civil society organizations, the government passed a landmark

Right to Information Act in 2005. Since then, social activists, civil society organizations, and ordinary

citizens have effectively used the Act to tackle corruption and bring greater transparency and

accountability in the government.

The rampant corruption prevailing in the country compelled the lawmakers to understand that there is no

way the country can become better without the servants favouring good governance. Under these

circumstances, the preamble of the Right to Information Act highlights containing corruption, improving

transparency and making servants accountable by empowering citizens to get information..

To help the poorest requires attacking corruption at its root. And the RTI Act is sufficiently strong in its

present form to even attack the roots of corruption. There will forever be corruption at the lower levels

as long as its seeds are sown at the highest level and the RTI Act can be used to expose these seeds of

corruption which in turn can curb corruption at the lower levels.

With Corruption scandals clouding India‘s government and dominating headlines over the last years, 71

years old Gandhian and well-known activist Anna Hazare‘s –five day fast unto-death articulated the building

angst in India against serial corruption scams in government and public life. Insisting on a strong

unimpeachable and independent anti-corruption authority, he showed up the government weak effort to get

the toothless anti-corruption Lokpal Bill passed.

There are various issues and Challenges to Right to Information Act 2005 like lack of proper procedure

for recording orders and total lack of accountability as to when written orders will be given. One primary

issue is arbitrary refusal of information for reasons not justified by the RTI Act.
With the Corruption being viewed as one of the biggest obstacles in the efficient delivery of development

resources to the poor developing countries. The quality of life of people has also been adversely affected

by corruption. The time has come now where the responsibility of tackling this problem, needs to be taken

by the people themselves. Civil society institutions have a key role to play in generating the much needed

awareness, determination and drive, to expose the maladies of corruption and fine tune the functioning of

public organizations.

Thus, RTI has an immense power to make government accountability and transparency. We have the power

and responsibility of bringing Good Governance by using and making awareness about the use of RTI.

Gauge the Success of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

Mahatma Gandhi once said, ‘Sanitation is more important than Independence’. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a

Swachh Bharat mission led by the government of India to make India a clean India. This campaign was

launched officially by the Government of India on 145th birthday anniversary of the great person,

Mahatma Gandhi on 2nd of October, 2014. It is implemented to fulfill the vision and mission of clean India

one day. It was launched especially on the birth anniversary of the Mahatma Gandhi as he had dreamt and

was very keen to make this country a clean country. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (SBA) is one of the

largest cleanliness drives in the world, with a workforce of three million government employees who are

directly or indirectly attached to the programme. This campaign has initiated people globally towards the

cleanliness. Teachers and students of the school are joining this “Clean India Campaign” very actively with

great fervour and charm.

The aim of the mission is to cover all the rural and urban areas of the country to present this country as

an ideal country before the world. The mission has targeted aims like eliminating the open defecation,

converting insanitary toilets into pour flush toilets, eradicating manual scavenging, complete disposal and

reuse of solid and liquid wastes, bringing behavioural changes to people and motivate health practices,

spreading cleanliness awareness among people, strengthening the cleanliness systems in the urban and rural

areas as well as creating user friendly environment for all private sectors interested for investing in India

for cleanliness maintenance.

The completion of this mission would indirectly draw the attention of business investors in India, enhance

the GDP growth, draw tourists attention from all over the world, bring variety of sources of employment,

reduce health costs, reduce death rate, and reduce lethal disease rate and many more. Clean India would

bring more tourists and enhance its economical condition.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is indeed successful in acknowledging the unhygienic conditions in India. Instead of

ignoring the sanitation issue, working towards the clean India is undoubtedly a good thing.

We can say swachh bharat abhiyan, a nice welcome step to the clean and green India till 2019. As we all

heard about the most famous proverb that “Cleanliness is Next to Godliness”, we can say surely that clean

India campaign (swachh bharat abhiyan) will really bring godliness all over the country in few years if it is

followed by the people of India in effective manner. So, the cleanliness activities to warm welcome the

godliness have been started but do not need to be ended if we really want godliness in our lives forever. A

healthy country and a healthy society need its citizens to be healthy and clean in every walk of life.

Ambit and Expansion of Aadhaar Card Scope in India

Aadhar Card is the unique identity card issued by the Government of India to each citizen. Aadhar is a 12-

digit number that serves as a unique identifier for Indian citizens and residents. This number ensures that

the individual is recognised by the Government for deliverance of various schemes’ benefits. Aadhar does

away the need for each citizen to have multiple ID cards issued by various government departments. The

12-digit number of Aadhar is sufficient to uniquely identify any person. Government aims to gradually

phase out all other ID cards like PAN card etc. and replace them with a single card ie Aadhar.

Aadhar does away the need for each citizen to have multiple ID cards issued by various government

departments. The government uses Aadhar network in order to ensure that individuals who require

assistance and benefits gain access to these resources directly, eliminating the need for middlemen. The

12-digit number of Aadhar is sufficient to uniquely identify any person. Government aims to gradually

phase out all other ID cards like PAN card etc. and replace them with a single card i.e. Aadhar.

As part of this process, it is gradually linking all essential government services and benefits schemes to

the Aadhar network, creating a centralized database through which it can distribute and keep track of the

various schemes and programs it runs along with the beneficiaries. In this manner, it can also identify

those who are receiving benefits but are not eligible for them and take corrective action. As the

Government has already linked Aadhar to bank account and to LPG connection so through the PAHAL

scheme individuals can receive their LPG subsidy directly into their bank accounts. This also negate the

possibility of the funds being misappropriated or of individuals making fraudulent claims in order to claim

benefits. One of the major impacts of creation of Aadhar card is its reduce the risk of fake ID proofs.

With the valid Aadhar card, it has become possible to transfer wages to individuals in timely manner

working under MNREGA.

The benefits of Aadhar are numerous but in case of a security breach in Aadhar database , the personal

details of all the citizens will be at risk. If this apprehension can be dealt with, Aadhar expansion in the

country will be highly beneficial for the citizens.

Decriminalisation of Section 377

Section 377 of IPC states that whoever, voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature

with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either

description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine or in simple words any

form of unnatural sex such as homosexuality etc. is criminalized in India. Lacking precise definition,

Section 377 became subject to varied judicial interpretation over the years. This section states “with any

man, woman or animal”, it means this section punishes homosexuality and bestiality as a whole because

according to this section these are unnatural forms of intercourse which is not procreative. Section 377

ban acts of homosexuality as well as some act of heterosexuality which are not natural like anal or oral sex.

The Supreme court has delivered a verdict on September 6th , 2018 unanimously decriminalising section

377 of Indian Penal Code.Decriminalization of 377 is just the beginning and much has to be done in

changing the mindsets of people and making them aware that there are individuals whose identities differ

from those embraced in today’s mainstream society and that everyone deserves equal respect, regardless

of their orientation. In our country, it is considered a mental illness and a few self-proclaimed spirituality

and wellness gurus even go as far as claiming to be able to cure it.

Basically homosexuality is a private act and it is executed in a very confidential manner between two

consenting adults. The reason behind this is very obvious, section 377 of the Indian Penal Code and social

unacceptability. Because this law results into social stigma upon the homosexuals, in order to skip this act

is being done in hiding, is clearly the abuse of law. And now with the applauding judgement by the Apex

court , it is clear that this is no more a social stigma and every individual has his personal choice to live the

way they want. It is a concept that is widely accepted throughout the world and it is time India moved

ahead with embracing progressive laws to join other nations on the path of development and progress.

To conclude it can be said that coming out of the closet may not be easy. Interfaith relationships were

never a criminal offence, yet have severe repercussions and something like same-sex relationships will take

a long time to lose the stigma attached. Decriminalization is the first progressive step in acknowledging

and normalizing the rights of those forced into secrecy and attempting to dictate gender boundaries for
love could only be done by changing the thinking of people. Insulting someone on the basis of their

orientation is a violation of human rights, as everyone is entitled to a dignified life.

India- a loser in most of the sports apart from cricket

It is a bitter truth that one single game is blotting many others games in India. Cricket fever has

overshadowed our national sport Hockey. There is no question of any debate that cricket is killing other

sports in our country. Indians eat, live, sleep, talk and walk cricket. Success so far reinforces the country’s

well-established status as one of the world’s best cricketing nations. The sport might not have the global

appeal of, say, football but to people on the subcontinent names like MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar are as

powerful as Messi or Ronaldo. Theoretically we all know that hockey is our national game but in practical

vision its cricket maniac all over.

It is a dismal but true that no one remembers that in Shooting, Gagan Narang won four Gold medals in

Commonwealth Games 2010, or Indian World Champion wrestler Sushil Kumar has won the gold medal in

FILA 2010 World Wrestling Championships or Olympic bronze medals won by tennis star Leander Paes

(Atlanta, 1996), but Anil Kumble’s 10-wicket haul, Harbhajan’s hat-trick, and Virender Sehwag’s 309 will be

evergreen in memory.

Even the athlete parents don’t want their kids to pursue career in sports and this is a major setback. They

want their kids only to become a doctor, engineer, accountant and not an Olympian. The reasons for this

shrewd attitude towards sports are that sportspersons are not funded for their requirements and

trainings, they are left at the mercy of crowdfunding, and sportspersons from other sports apart from

cricket do not earn much in India. Instead of practicing for the game our players have to approach private

companies to sponsor them.

Many budding players in sports like shooting, lifting, hockey etc. cannot continue their passion due to lack

of governmental aid provided to them at International level which is not the case with cricket. Scarcity of

stadiums, playgrounds and poor sports system in schools colleges also pull down interest of people in other

sports. For example , Dipa Karmakar, only Indian gymnast to qualify in 36 years from India had to be

dependent on crowdfunding for her training and tournaments.

The fund crunch in the sports sector is the major problem. Most of our sportspersons have to make use of

nature’s settings to brush up their skills instead of having a well-planned stadium or court.

If this cricket mania continues, India can never do well in the Olympics or any other sports for years to

come. Hence there is a great need to reform the administration, infrastructure, training and facilities
given to players of other sports than cricket so that they can shine more brightly with their stunning

performances. Other sports have the full right to move up the pecking order.

Role of Media in Good Governance

Media is the most important vital element for dissemination of information , it stands for all the agencies

which are focussed on presenting the information to the people. It is often referred to as the fourth pillar

of democracy. The role of the media in promoting good governance is clear. All aspects of good governance

are facilitated by a strong and independent mediascape within a society. Only when journalists are free to

monitor, investigate and criticize the public administration’s policies and actions can good governance take

hold. Independent media are like a beacon that should be welcomed when there is nothing to hide and much

to improve. The role of media has become extremely critical for smooth functioning of democracy as it

helps in forming public opinion on vital topics. All forms of media have a specific set of followers and

therefore, they together ensure a better governance.

The evolution of media is a fascinating journey. Print media was responsible for conveying information

regarding freedom struggle of great leaders. It continues to remain popular despite fierce competition and

is still the preferred medium for reaching out to masses as well as classes. On the other hand, the Radio is

a simple medium that is portable as well. Radio wields its influence greatly in rural areas where a majority

may not know how to read or write. Television is a phenomenon that continues to grab the maximum

eyeballs. It’s a well established fact that visual medium does have the greatest impact. The presentation

and the catchy visuals do ensure that a large part of the country is tuned in for entertainment as well as

information. The latest medium is the Internet that combines the audio and visual effects to reach out to

millions of users worldwide.

In a democracy like ours, media can also help voters with the contents of civic and political education and

strengthen the culture of democracy. This suggests that free access to information on matters of public

importance has become a core of the governing process. In a developing country such as India, media has a

great responsibility to fight the backward ideas such as superstition, casteism and communalism. It also

needs to help people in their struggle against poverty and other social evils. Since a large section of people

is backward and ignorant, it is responsibility of the media to bring modern ideas to them and remove their

ignorance.

A lot of governments across the world have faced charges of corruption highlighted by media and that has

often led to either overthrowing of corrupt administration or bringing in more transparency into the

system. Hence, the fourth estate can help in efficacy to the existing scheme of things as well.

The journey of India from a developing nation to a developed one will depend a lot on the role played by the

media in the country. It needs to focus on the real issues, which are mostly social and economic in nature,

instead to trying to divert the attention to the non-issues. The checks and balances which media ensures

by reporting issues in an objective manner can go a long way in ensuring that governance by government

would be fair and fruitful.

How to tackle farmer’s suicide issue

India has always been revered for its Agriculture as it is it primary sector in India. India is an agrarian

economy, which means, Agriculture is the pre-dominant sector of the Indian economy. And , truly, even

today close to 70 percent of the population is dependent on agriculture for livelihood.Although , the

secondary and tertiary sectors in India are growing at rapid rates, still a vast majority of Indians continue
to depend on agriculture. Every plan for the growth of the Indian economy aims at agricultural

development, which is justified because to achieve the growth rates that the economy aims at, it is

important to first address the growth rate of the major sector of the economy.

It is a dismal situation but true that the cases of farmer suicides in India have increased over the years.

Farmer Suicides in India has seen an increase over the period of time. Growing disparity in the weather

conditions, high debts, health issues, personal problems, frequent droughts, floods, economic crises, health

issues, family responsibilities, changes in the government policies, alcohol addiction, low produce prices and

poor irrigation facilities are among some of the common factors that contribute to farmer suicides in

India.

There can be some initiatives that the government must take proactively to control the issue of farmer

suicides in India like the government must set up exclusive agricultural zones where only agricultural

activities should be allowed. Initiative must be taken to teach modern farming techniques to the farmers

to help them increase farm productivity. Farmers need to be advised and guided on economical methods of

cultivation which would save finances for them. Irrigation facilities must be improved. National weather

risk management system must be put in place to alert farmers about the extreme weather conditions.

Genuine crop insurance policies must be launched. Farmers must be encouraged to go for alternative

sources of income and the government should take up the responsibility of providing training to the

farmers to acquire new skills. Making institutional finance available to every farmer is another important

solution to save to the farmers from debt traps of money lenders. Where institutional finance is available,

it should be made easily accessible to the poorest farmers. The complex procedures should be abolished.

Relief packages should be given as a benefit to farmers to enable them to sustain their livelihood rather

than as a relief to families of farmers who commit suicide.

The Government needs to come up with proactive solutions and the nation has to realize that farmers’

suicides are not minor issues happening in remote parts of a few states, it is a reflection of the true state

of the basis of our economy. If India has to shine, it is these farmers that need to be empowered.

What is the cause for decrease in the forest cover in India?

Forests are not formed in a single day , it takes ample time for their growth. India is proudly standing at

number 10 rank for is forest cover globally but the situation is different as acknowledged. India’s forest

cover has declined by 367 sq km between 2007 and 2009. The largest loss faced is by north east which is

approx 550 square kms. According to recent study , the forest cover of India is 7,08,273 sqkm or 24.39%

of total area of India. It seems that in last two years it has increased by 1 percent but very dense and mid

dense forests are wiping off which is a matter of worry.

The major cause of this decrease can be acclaimed by rise in population. Since India ranks second in world

population , there is no doubt that it needs more infrastructure , food , clothing , shelter etc. Trees have

been cut off to meet all the needs of the increasing population, to expand the land for constructions. India

being country of villages has large scale use of wood fuel, which meets 40% of energy needs of the

country. Also , cutting of trees for commercial purposes like fire wood and building material, timber for

furniture and other pulps for papers. Mining , on the other hand , causes environmental impacts like

erosion, formation of sinkholes, loss of biodiversity, and contamination of soil, groundwater and surface

water by chemicals from mining processes.

Other major cause is Industrialization and Urbanization which needs land to grow, so major amount of

forest lands are cut in order to promote Industrialization and Urbanization. This creates harmful effect

on environment and forest ecological balance. For building big dams, large scale devastation of forests

takes place which breaks the natural ecological balance of the region. Floods, droughts and landslides

become more prevalent in such areas. Forests are the repositories of invaluable gifts of nature in the form

of biodiversity and by destroying these we are going to lose these species even before knowing them. Even

overgrazing has also been a cause for decrease in forest cover as it occurs when plants are exposed to

intensive grazing for extended periods of time, or without sufficient recovery periods. Overgrazing

reduces the usefulness, productivity, and biodiversity of the land and is one cause of desertification and

erosion.

Therefore , steps need to be taken to solve this issue. Mixed farming should be promoted. Other

alternatives for making paper should be envisaged. The area of mining should be properly allocated and
limitation should be put to it. Industries should come together and take initiatives and promote

afforestation.
