What is Structural Design?

Concept of Structural Design

Process of determining reliable structural system, selection of

suitable materials and determination of optimum member sizes for
the structure to built.
Aim : Ensure that the structure will perform satisfactorily during its
design life

STRUCTURAL DESIGN CLASSROOM Eng. F. M. M Abdullah

What is Structural Design?

Structural Design Should Ensure that

Concept of Structural Design

Structure Serve Structure is Safe

indented Purpose Structure is
its Life Span Economical

STRUCTURAL DESIGN CLASSROOM Eng. F. M. M Abdullah

What is Structural Design?
Safety and Reliability

Structure must be strong to safety support all anticipated loadings

Structure must not deflect, overturn, tilt, vibrate or crack in a
manner that impairs its usefulness

STRUCTURAL DESIGN CLASSROOM Eng. F. M. M Abdullah

What is Structural Design?
Structure Serve Intended Purpose

Arrangement of spaces, spans, ceiling height, access all these must

complement the intended use
The structure should fit its environment and be aesthetically pleasing

Structure Serve Intended Purpose

STRUCTURAL DESIGN CLASSROOM Eng. F. M. M Abdullah

What is Structural Design?
Economy

Overall cost of the structure should not exceed the client’s budget
Designer should take into account: Cost of the Materials, buildability,
construction time,

Interdependency Of Objective

Structure is Economical
(Financially & Environmentally)

Structure is Structure Serves its

Safe Intended Purpose

What is Reinforced Concrete?
Reinforced Concrete sometimes shortly called “RC” is a composite
material of steel bars embedded in a hardened concrete matrix.
Reinforced concrete is a very strong durable and versatile structural
material. It is a combination of concrete and steel.

What is Reinforced Concrete?

Since concrete is a brittle material and is strong in compression, it is

weak in tension, so steel is used inside the concrete which is a ductile
material for strengthening and reinforcing the tensile strength of the
concrete. When completely surrounded by the hardened concrete
mass it forms an integral part of the two material known as
“Reinforced Concrete”

Design Code of Practice
CONTENTS
Functions of the code of practice

• Document that gives recommendations for the design and construction of

structures
• Contains detailed requirements regarding loads, stresses, strengths, design
formulas and method of achieving the required performance of complete
structure.

STRUCTURAL DESIGN CLASSROOM Eng. F. M. M Abdullah

Design Code of Practice
CONTENTS
Functions of the code of practice

• Ensure the adequate structural safety

• Simplify the task of designer
• Code ensure a measure of consistency among different designers
• Have legal validity, in that code protect the structural engineers from any liability
due to structural failure due to inadequate supervision, faulty of material

STRUCTURAL DESIGN CLASSROOM Eng. F. M. M Abdullah

Design Code of Practice (BS 8110)
CONTENTS
Design of concrete structures is generally done within the framework of
engineering codes.
In this course the design procedures of the
British Standards, generally referred to as
BS 8110:1-1997 code is adopted.

Some code of practice to use to design RCC Structures

BS 648:1964 – Weights of building materials (dead load)

BS 8110-1:1997 (part 1) – Structural use of concrete (Code of practice for design
and construction)
BS 6399-1:1996 – Codes of practice for dead and imposed load
CP 3: Chapter V: Part 2: 1972 – Codes of practice for wind load

STRUCTURAL DESIGN CLASSROOM Eng. F. M. M Abdullah

Design Code of Practice ( EUROCODE 02)
CONTENTS
Design of concrete structures is generally done within the framework of
engineering codes.

STRUCTURAL DESIGN CLASSROOM Eng. F. M. M Abdullah

CONTENTS Methods of Design
Both Manual Hand Calculation and Software Method are Carried Out in
this Course:
