Design of facility layout
▪ Principles which drive design of the facility layout need to take into the
consideration objective of facility layout, factors influencing facility layout and
constraints of facility layout. These principles are as follows:
1. Ease of communication and support
2. Promotional value
3. Safety
4. Capital
▪ Ease of Communication and Support - Facilities should be laid out so that
communication within various areas of the business and interactions with vendors and
customers can be done in an easy and effective manner.
▪ Promotional Value - If the business commonly receives visitors in the form of
customers, vendors, investors, etc., the business owner may want to make sure that the
facility layout is an attractive one that further burnishes the company’s reputation.
▪ Capital - Capital investment should be minimal when finalizing different models of
facility layout.
Types of Facilities Layout
There are six types of facilities layout and they are as follows:
1.Line Layout
2. Functional Layout
3. Fixed Position Layout
4. Cellular Technology Layout
5. Combined Layout, and
6. Computerized Relative Allocation of Facility Technique
Line Layout
▪ Line layout is used in several continuous type of industries such as sugar, paper, cement
etc.
Functional Layout

▪ A functional layout is a workplace organization in which processes are organized by the
type of work (function) rather than by value stream or in a cellular configuration where
sequential process steps are located in close proximity.
Fixed-position layout and cell layout
▪ The layout of an operation is concerned with the physical location of its transforming
resources, that is deciding where to put the facilities, machines, equipment and staff in
the operation.
Fixed Position Layout
• In a fixed Position layout, the transformed resources does not move between its
transforming resources.
• Equipment, machinery, plant and people who do the processing move as necessary
because the product or customers are:
1. Too large.
2. Too delicate
3. Objects being move
▪ The location of resources for each project is unique and it will ne determined on the
convinience of transforming resources themselves.
▪ There are techniques which held tonlocate resources on fixed position layout they are
not widely used because this layout can be very complexand planned schedule do

Cell Layout
• The transformed resources entering the operation move into a cell in which all the
transforming resources it requires in located.
• After being processed in the cell, the transformed resources may move to a different
cell in the operation, or it may be a finished product or service.
• Each cell may be arranged in either a process or product layout.
• The cell type layout attempt to bring order to the complex flow seen in a process layout
Combined layout
▪ A combination of process and product layouts combines the advantages of the both
types of layouts. Moreover, these days pure product or process layouts are rare. Most
of the manufacturing sections are arranged in process layout with manufacturing lines
occurring here and there (scattered) wherever the conditions permit. A combination
layout is possible where an item is being made in different types and sizes.
▪ A combination layout is also useful when a number of items are produced in same
sequence but none of the items are to be produced in bulk and thus no item justifies for
an individual and independent production line.
Computerized relative allocation of facility technique (Craft)
▪ Computerized Relative Allocation of Facilities Technique (CRAFT) methodology was
utilized in this case as part of the strategy to portrait the relationship between each
department to generate improved layout alternatives.
▪ Is a tool that used to help improve the existing layout of the facilities. The facility is
improved by swaping two or more departments to help arrange the facility to an
optimal floor plan.
Advantages of CRAFT
▪ The fact that the calculation is done by computer – sophisticated calculating machine –
is clearly advantages that save a lot both time and money in the process.
▪ It gives us rooms to define the variable and constraints that we have out here in the real
world.
Disadvantages of CRAFT
▪ Inefficient
▪ Jobs time occured Jobs do not flow through in an orderly fashion, therefore
backtracking occurs often
