What’s Is It
Going back to the literary model, Karma, what is the plot of the story? Can you
give the plot of the story?

Plot:
The story mainly started in the railway station. While inside the waiting room, Sir
Mohan Lal took a glance into the mirror. The mirror is undeniably made in India. He
criticizes the mirror for being ineffective, indifferent, dirty and inefficient. He hates the
mirror as he hates the country. Despite of how he described the mirror, he still
admires his own reflection.

Outside the waiting room, his wife Lachmi, sat in a corner while chewing a betel
leaf. She is a native Indian woman with traditional values, evidently a complete
opposite of her husband. She wore a dirty sari, a very typical woman who can’t speak
in English. For that reasons, their rooms in the train are separated. Sir Mohan Lal will
get into the first class compartment because he is a barrister. He will go to meet many
officials in the compartment, while his wife will get into the inter-class woman
compartment. Lachmi starts chewing betel leaves and feels comfortable although the
room is empty and boring.
On the other hand, her husband still was enjoying the ambiance in the first
class compartment while drinking wines. Primarily, he has spent five years in Oxford
University, so he is totally equipped in using English as a medium. He speaks with
attitude, with proper pronunciation, and foreign accent. Unsurprisingly, he can talk to
anyone with fluency, spontaneity and automaticity like a native speaker. He loves to
speak and feel comfortable with Englishman so he expects some foreigners as co-
passengers. If that happens, that would be a nice and enjoyable trip for him.
He keeps reading the “The Times” and smokes English cigarettes because he believes
that he would easily attract the attention of Englishmen with the use of those
paraphernalia.

Fortunately, two British soldiers entered his first class reserved coupe but with
other purpose. Sir Mohan Lal accepts them with open arms but the soldiers ordered
him to get out from the compartment. Though it is reserved for Sir Mohan Lal, the
soldiers don’t give a damn, they don’t care for him. The situation gets worse; the
soldiers threw all the belongings of Sir Mohan Lal before they push him out of the
train. He got wounded but the train quickly passed the station.
However, his wife is indeed unaware and uninformed of his condition. She
comfortably got home safe and sound.

behaviors of the British soldiers taught Sir Mohan Lal a lesson and a punishment of
his own aristocracy.

NOTHING”

Theme Friendship and Jealousy

From the examples of what you have written above based on your own experience,
develop that into a short story.

What I Can Do

Answer briefly the questions below.
1. Going back to the story, Karma, what is the theme of the story?
How does the writer present the theme of the story?
The writer presents the Theme of the story as "Pride Cross before
a fall". It is the story of an arrogant person who feels bad about his
culture, lifestyle etc. He is reluctant to his wife because she is an
ordinary woman who is unable to impart foreign culture into her
life.
2. Compare and contrast the two persons (Mohan Lal and Lachmi)
in the story. Write your answer in your notebook.
Sir Mohan Lal was an Anglicized Indian who took pride in
everything British and hated anything that was Indian. His
treatment of Indians was so cruel that he was ashamed to travel
even with his wife and did not like his in-laws. On the other hand
Lachmi was an extremely ordinary and simple lady who did not
even reciprocate the hatred of her husband. She thought of herself
as a submissive, docile wife of an aggressive, flamboyant person.
Lachmi could mix freely with the lower class people and was
comfortable with everything common and Indian.
