Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step as
you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to
ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that
you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also provided
to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best
help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this
SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And read
the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks
in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

What I Need to Know

This lesson deals on how to prevent and control the substance use and
abuse. The lesson will teach you how to make Decision-Making Skills and use
Resistance Skills in different kind of situation. It will enhance your knowledge in
deeper understanding, thoughts and ideas and the attitude in facing and
overcoming harmful situation in life. You will engage in activities which will
enhance your capability as a student and be guided by your teacher. And also
provide some suggestion about healthy alternatives to prevent the use of drugs of
abuse.

What’s In

Substance use and abuse is a very rampant and growing health problem worldwide.
Many of our officials do their very best just to stop the problem of drugs because it destroys
many lives especially those of our youth today.

In this module, you are going to learn and discover how to apply prevention and
control in the use of drugs and its abuse. There are some activities to perform to give deeper
understanding and to guide you in life.

Lesson Objectives:

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to;

 Learn about the different decision-making skills and resistance skills to


prevent substance use and abuse

 Apply decision-making and resistance skills in situations related to substance use


and abuse

Make a poster that present the idea of the use and abuse of illegal drugs in the
Philippines or in your community for 20 minutes.

This part of the lesson gives you an idea how harmful the substances are. The
activity shows that as we go through our daily lives, we are facing so much trouble and
problems in our society that involves the people that surrounds you. The teacher will let you
discover from the news articles that you have read that drugs are not good to your body. It
gives you much understanding whoever was involved of each illegal incident: what
happened; when did it happen; where did it happen; why did it happen; and how did it
happen. As you go through the activity, it will give you clear understanding and teach you
how to avoid those kinds of incidents and how it affects you.

Cut at least two drug related articles from any local newspaper or magazine. Paste
each article in a short bond paper. Analyze each article using the format below.

Create your own illustration of an “armor shield” on how to protect you and
other against drug use, abuse and dependence. Be very creative. Use your
imagination. Describe your drawing and submit it for a class presentation.

What I Can Do

After learning the lesson about the decision-making skills and resistance
skills, and about the types of drugs that can be used and abused by the young
people, this activity will give you a chance to show what you can do. The teacher
will give you an activity to perform to measure your learning about decision-
making skills and resistance skills.

Activity 1: Activity 6: Role-playing

1. Create a role-play showing how a person succeeded from being addicted


to drug and substance by following the tips of the healthy alternatives to
substance and drug abuse.
2. You role-play must showcase decision-making and resistance skills in
situations related to substance use and abuse
3. Prepare it to the class afterwards.
4. You will be rated based on the Rubrics given below. 1 is the lowest and 5
is the highest score
