the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning


situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of learners. The lessons
are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them
can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

unstable, discharge, misunderstand, exhale, irregular


Suffixes are sometimes called postfixes, word endings that add a certain meaning to the word.
They also change the function or speech part of the base word.

Examples: home + less = homeless care + less = careless


icon + ic = iconic well + ness = wellness

Prefixes are a type of affix that are placed at the beginning of a word to modify or change the
meaning of that word. Your knowledge of prefix helps widen your vocabulary and boost your
reading comprehension.

Examples: pre + view = preview re + post = repost


sub + conscious = subconscious super + market= supermarket

Note:

To get the meaning of a word, it must be used in a context and there is a clue. When we
say context clue, it means you get the meaning of the word as it is used with other words.
Therefore, the words that precede and follow an unfamiliar word will help you get its specific
meaning. The word or is a signal that a meaning for a new word will follow.

What is It

Blended words are two words joined together by taking parts of both words and
combining the parts into a new word.
 Sometimes called portmanteau words (French word for suitcase), blended words
consist of two words whose parts are “folded” into one forming new word with
another meaning.
Examples
Read the sentences. (Context Clues)
I ate my brunch at the canteen since I haven’t eaten my breakfast and lunch.
Elsa sends mail through her electronic computer last night but Anna read her email the next
morning.

What do you think is the meaning of brunch? Email?


These are examples of blended words. We can find the meaning of these unfamiliar words using
context clues or we can find the meaning of words in the sentence such as:
breakfast + lunch= brunch
electronic + mail= email

Read and observe the following words:

What do you think is the meaning of smassy? multiplex?


Synonyms are words with the same meaning. Unfamiliar words can be defined
through synonyms. Such as smassy = smart but rude
multiplex = multiple complex

Antonyms are words with opposite meaning. Unfamiliar words can be defined
through antonyms. Such as smassy = unwise timid
multiplex = single simple

These are examples of blended words. We can find the meaning of these
unfamiliar words through their word parts.

A Dictionary is a reference book that lists words alphabetically and explains each word.
At the top of a dictionary page, there are two words in bold prints. These are called
GUIDE WORDS. The first guide word is usually the first word on the page.
The second guide word is usually the last word on the page. The guide words show
the words we are looking for on the page of a dictionary.

As you look through a dictionary, you will soon notice that many words have more than
one meaning. Whenever you check a word in the dictionary or read all its meanings.

Find the meaning that fits the context in which you found the word or intend to use it.
