My Language Biography

I'm Jeralyn B. Pumicpic, 17 years old. I am currently taking Bachelor of Science in Social Work. I
can speak three languages: Bisaya, Filipino, and English. Bisaya is my first language or mother tongue. I
grew up in Baha, Dimataling, Zamboanga del Sur, where most residents speaks Bisaya, which is my
mother tongue and the primary language I use at home and in public. I learnt Bisaya in an internal
linguistic context by imitation from my parents and family and I also learned through the people around
me. My parents family and converse in Bisaya everyday in our house. When they were chatting, I could
understand them. I can read, write, understand, and speak Bisaya language, which is my first language.

On the other hand, my second language is Filipino, which is I learned from watching news,
movies and drama on television. I also learned it from listening to news and reading books. During my
elementary school days, I also studied Filipino language from my Filipino teacher, who introduced me to
it and individually taught me the fundamentals such as the Filipino alphabet and its sounds. I can speak
fluently, write, understand, and comprehend the national Filipino language, which has greatly aided me
in connecting with individuals who speak Filipino.

English is my third language. Reading English book and novels at school helped me learn the
language. One of the reasons I developed my English language was because of a teacher who always
spoke English while she taught us during Elementary days. Since grade school, I’ve only had a vague
understanding of what teacher say in English, and I’ve also had a rudimentary understanding of what I
read in English. I can write as well, but it’s not technically accurate; nonetheless, I lack bravery to talk in
English. When I got to High School, my English language skills improved because our teachers taught us
English grammar, pronunciation, and everything about English language. My English skills also improved
a little because I like reading books (especially Wattpad) and watching movies that has subtitles on it,
but I still lack confidence when speaking. I can read, write, understand, and talk in English, but not
fluently.

My language strength is that I can read, write, understand, and speak both my first and second
language fluently. My Language weaknesses are in English language; I am unable to speak effectively
and occasionally find it difficult to understand English when a speaker has an accent and speaks fluently.
Learning English has made it easier for me to communicate with others who speak English. My favorite
language is Bisaya language of course. Because I grew using it, I can also communicate to others fluently
and confidently, and I can understand everything. I can express myself using Bisaya language.
